I think Two Buck Chuck is fine.  If you want just one red and one white, I'd go with Merlot and Chardonnay, since they are the most versatile with foods.

[QUOTE]Thanks everyone !!      I agree about the "free" thing. I want to properly host my guests and not give them a headache with cheapass wine.  And, I also don't want to blow my whole liquor budget on a few bottles of wine.  Gotta keep the beer/champagne drinkers happy too !!     I think the vast majority of my guests will drink the Sangria or beer.  We probably have 30-40 wine drinkers on the guest list at most. I was going to try get away with doing a vodka/pink lemonade signature drink, particularly since I don't drink beer OR wine.  I want a damn cocktail.  But, our reception is being held at building rented and managed by the regional park district.  I kept thinking... what, are they going to DNA test my signature drink?  If the park ranger asks, I'll just tell them it's a white wine/lemonade mixture. But, I'm not sure I want to risk my $1,000.00 deposit.

I think all the wines suggested here are good and anyone who suggests otherwise is incorrect.  Cupcake also has a good chardonnay and a good red and they are both around $7.  And I don't think there is anything wrong with serving Two Buck Chuck to your guests.  I think it tastes good and you can not beat $2-3 a bottle (depending on where you live).  The Lambrusco suggestion was also a good one.

there are a ton of good wines for less than $10 a bottle and if you can get a discount for buying in bulk so much the better.

Also, have you had a winerita or bellini?  Those are mixed drinks with wine as the base so if you are not a wine drinker, maybe you would enjoy those for the reception?

  • I think any of those choices are good.  I don't really get Two Buck Chuck very often because there's no TJ close to me, but I get Barefoot, Sutter Home, and Berringer often.  I usually prefer the Barefoot wines, except Sutter Home has the best Moscato IMO (in that price range).

For the wines, I'm not a big red drinker, so take this opinion with a grain of salt, but I usually prefer a cabernet sauvignon.  For whites, Chardonnay is usually a good choice because it works with a wider variety of foods, but it's a bit dry for some people, so a Pinot Grigio or Reisling would work too.

  • We used Bota Box wine at our reception, and all of our guests were happy with the selection. It cost about $20/box, and each one was the equivalent to 4 bottles of wine. We had our venue pour the wine from the box into a carafe for presentation. Even some of my family members who are self-proclaimed wine snobs enjoyed it--we had Pinot Grigio, Cab, Merlot, and Reisling. I will also agree that TJ's two buck Chuck and Barefoot are not bad at all.

  • We are also planning on using two buck chuck!  I agree that both the Trader Joe's and the Whole Foods specials will be your best bet to save moolah.  My plan is to have the fiance create sticky labels that have our names and wedding date on them, and place them over hte beloved Charles Shaw logo.  Perhaps add in something clever about the us or "create" a fake vineyard name that represents us as a couple.

Another point, since both TJ and WF's wines do not say the store name on the bottle, if people do recognize them as "cheap" wines, it is more than likely because they buy and drink them at home.  My mother and aunt are both heavy wine drinkers (might have to get them a couple of their own bottles...) and both have been known to indulge in the two buck chuck variety.  I think many of our guests would get a kick out of seeing it on the table.

Last point, the only time I would disagree with two buck chuck at the wedding would be if it was a very high-class affair, in which you were spending well into the six figure range.  Then, you might come off as inconsiderate for spending $$$ on the things you like, but cheaping out on the wine since you don't drink it.  But as a normal* bride with a relatively low budget, trying to plan a wedding while buying a house (paying for it all ourselves!), two buck chuck is not only acceptable, it's smart!

*normal is used here to mean "average American bride"...I am extremely jealous of brides with deep pocketbooks, but sadly, that is not me...or most of the posters on here.

  • I've never had TBC because I've never lived near a TJ's, but I can definitely agree that the Whole Foods house brand is excellent. You might also want to check out a Cost Plus World Market if the one near you sells wine. They have great deals on cases and sometimes they sell off particular types, like a sparkling wine sale or a cabernet sale. I know not all of them have wine, but when we lived in FL that's where we bought all of ours.

I'm late to the party and no one will probably see this, but I'll tell you this anyway.

I'm by no means a wine snob, but I do drink a ton of wine.  And while two buck chuck isn't bad, TJs has SO many other wines that will run you around $4-5 (two buck chuck is actually $2.99) and they are far superior.

They used to have an excellent Sauv Blanc called Kona that is $5, La Finca Malbec is around $4.

There is even a Mediterranean white and red that has a beach scene on the bottle and I think those are $4 and they are amazing.

Talk to the sales people, they'll tell you which ones are good.

That's my two cents ont he matter.

  • Personally, I think two buck chuck is better than Three Wishes from whole foods. I did it as a taste test at home (that was a tough thing, but someone had to do it!)

A friend recently brought Berringer over for dinner at my house, and I thoroughly enjoyed that.

Bota IS an excellent wine, read the reviews and see the awards.  Don't knock it because it comes in a box.  You can serve it from carafes.  Hobby Lobby carries carafes at very reasonable prices.

And to any who were offended at my prior post, my apologies.  Good wine doesn't have to be expensive, but IMO 2 buck chuck is not good even at 4.00 dollars or whatever it is a bottle

We used a Tempranillo (Spanish) wine for the red at our wedding and it was a  big hit. I hate red wine and I liked that one. It was about $9 a bottle, I think the brand is Tarima Monastrell.

For less expensive white wine, I LOVE Casal Garcia. It is a vino verde, so it is fresh and crisp and not too dry. It runs about $6 a bottle at our local grocery.

We wanted to use local for the white, though, so we went with a local (messina hof) Gwertztraminer and unoaked Chardonnay. They were big hits. And were around $8/bottle, which isn't bad.

  • I will agree with the recommendation for Bota box and glass carafes, that is probably the best bang for your buck.

One comment I will disagree with is that I would not at all recommend Lambrusco. It has a flavor kind of like concord grapes (it's often very sweet, but not always) and it is definitely the kind of thing that people either love or hate, so not ideal if you only have a few wine choices.
  • I wish our TJ's could carry wine.  Oh, PA.

Barefoot's wine is amazing.  Moscato's really popular right now (white) and theirs keeps winning awards (so says the bottle on top of my fridge).  I like sweeter wines, though; if you want to keep it neutral I'd go with their Cab and either Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.

2 buck chuck is a hell of a lot better than Sutter Home.

  • Thanks again everyone!  These are great suggestions !!!    I think I'll go talk to TJs and pick a few different bottles. Maybe I'll have one of my more wine snobby friends come over and do a taste test of all of our cheapo wines and have them make the selection for us !

thanks again!  I suck at wines.  Now, give me a nice grey goose & cranberry...  and I can make some decisions!
  • I just picked up a Bohemian Highway Sauvignon Blanc, we had it with dinner, it was good and only $7.99 (in New Hampshire...probably costs less on the west coast since its made in Sonoma)

All this talk of wine made it really difficult to pass-up the wine aisle in Hannaford.

  • We're planning on buying TBC for our reception too! I actually just went to TJ's today to pick up a few different bottles since I've mostly had only the merlot and cab sauv.  I had the pinot grigio with dinner this evening, and I really liked it.  I also picked up a bottle of Vola pinot grigio.  I hadn't heard of the brand before, but it was just a tad cheaper than TBC (at least here in Ohio).

Earlier in our wedding planning, I asked my "drinking friends" what they thought about us buying TBC for the reception, and every one of them said they'd do the same thing.

Riesling for white. Not big on red wines. When I do buy them I like the sweet Italian reds. Sorry, I have not had any of the ones you listed in your post. I do think I would keep things simple 1 white and 1 red. You may be able to get a better deal that way.

  • We were going to serve two buck chuck at our wedding, but then my aunt at a local wine store suggested Double Dog Dare.  It was around the same price, but much nicer-tasting.  We just served a chardonnay and a cabernet, and everyone seemed happy.
  • Cupcake wine is also pretty inexpensive (about $7 - $9 per bottle) and very good. Red Velvet and the Sauv Blanc would be nice choices for Red and White wines. I also know they have other Reds and I believe a Chardonnay. Hope this helps!

I think cheap wine is fine, especially if it's free. They will enjoy it! We're buying wine that's about $10/bottle, which is the cheapest our venue will order. We chose pinor noir and pinot grigio because they both come a little closer to the middle. Not too sweet, not too dry. I would also vote against Beringer and Sutter Home as brands, but that could just be my personal preference!
