Flower girl questions (etiquette, attire, randomness)

Ok So for my wedding this summer I'm wanting to have one of my cousins to be my flower girl. She's about 8, and the cutest thing ever. I have already talked to her mom who ok her being a flower girl, but I havn't actually talked to my cousin yet. I want to send her a gift/ some sort of sweet sentiment but I cannot do it in person because she lives about 6 hours away. Is this appropriate? I bought my bridesmaids matching necklaces, and I was thinking about sending her something that she could wear to the wedding.
Which brings me to my second question. I've been looking at flower girl dresses and honestly I don't like 99% of them. We are having a causal outdoor wedding and the big poofy flower girl dresses just won't look right. At the bottom of the post is a picture of one of the few dresses that I kinda like. Any suggestions on style where to find flower girl dresses? And who pays for the dress? We (mom and I) were going to price some dresses and offer to do halfsies if it was expensive....

  • A lot of times you can find cute dresses in department stores in the spring (think Easter Dresses.)

If you can't give her something in person, you can send her something. A sweet bracelet, perhaps? Maybe with a charm of something she likes.
Or maybe a book like this? - /> clicky link It comes with a keepsake necklace.

Your wedding is in July which is the PERFECT time if you want an inexpensive, extremely cute, and summery flower girl dress.
First, try to look for Easter dresses at department stores. Some stores have great after-Easter sales. I found the perfect Easter dress for my friend's little girl at Kohls that looked kinda like the dress style you have in that picture.
You can wait a little bit until some more spring dresses come out, especially in May and June. She'll grow from now until then, so there is no rush to get her dress now.

Who buys the flower girl dress?
Usually the mother of the girl buys it, but if you can swing it, it's totally okay to offer to go halfsies. Just make sure, no matter what, you ask your aunt what the budget is before you offer up suggestions, so you're on the same page.

Why am I making this so complicated?
I don't think you're making this as complicated as most other people, to be honest. I think, judging from your OP, you're just so excited about having your cousin in your wedding party that you want it to be perfect. That's pretty normal, as normal goes.

  • I hadn't even thought about the Easter dresses. My only worry would be that she would outgrow it before the wedding. Iguess we couild always get her a size up and hope for the best lol

  • I would buy 1 size up and then have it altered as you get closer to the wedding if it is crazy big on her.
  • I think an 8-year-old is more likely to want to be a flower girl if she perceives both the job and the request to be respectful and dignified.  "Cute" may be counterproductive there.

You might find dresses of the kind you like in the spring-they appear to be sundresses that are slightly formal.

As for why you think you are making this complicated, probably you're just excited and happy and hope everyone around you feels the same.
  • I know people also go to  religious shops that are geared toward "communion dresses" which tend to be white and alot cheaper

What about a cookie basket? I know cookiesbydesign cookies taste good and are cute...

<div>This. My mom actually still has my sister and my communion dresses from when we were kids. I was planning on using it for my Neice and have it Altered to fit her as her flower girl dress.</div>

  • I second the Easter dress idea. My wedding was also in July and we found a great Easter dress on sale at JCP for $20 that was perfect! (I included a picture at the end of the post). Other stores we looked at were Burlington coat factory, dillards, macys etc. Really any department store is a better bet and will be so much less expensive than anything marketed as a flower girl dress.

We went for a dress in lavender (bridesmaids were in purple and groomsmen had lavender ties). I have seen both white flower girl dresses or the flower girl in the wedding colors. Generally the flower girl's parents pay for the dress, although they should be asked what the budget is first. Of course if you want to help pay for the dress that is usually greatly appreciated. We ended up just paying for our flower girl's dress because in the grand scheme of things $20 wasn't a big deal at all for us to cover.

My flower girl was 5, and I didn't do anything special to ask her, I just talked to her parents. I did give her a pressent at the rehearsal dinner that included a flower girl dora doll (she loves dora the explorer). As well as a little purse and little girl costume jewelry in her favorite color. Like bridesmaids shop for her like it is her birthday.

  • I'm probably late on this thread, but I wanted to add about the Easter section.  My SIL got the FG dress after Easter for our October wedding.  She got a size up in case she grew.  It was $20, so if you were really worried, you could probably buy 2 sizes for a fraction of the cost of a FG dress at a bridal shop.

  • I'm with people who said Easter dresses, Communion dresses, and spring/summer dresses from a department store!  Some stores, I know of JCPenney and Herbergers for sure, even will have them clearanced by May if they are still more than you want to spend on them!  I wanted my flower girl's dress to look similar to mine and since my dress is ivory, I didn't want her in white, so I went with ivory for her's as well.  I found one flower girl dress at David's Bridal that I liked, so I emailed that, along with pictures of my dress to the flower girl's mother.  I told her that she can get that dress for FG or she could find another dress in a similar style and ivory at another store, if they so choose.
