What do you think the punishment should be

Re: What do you think the punishment should be

  • Damn....lol I am really trying to find Rosemary some reinforcements to help her volunteer - they are out in the sticks so it's not like they can do a Petsmart or Petco adoption event regularly....just until a few months ago they didn't even have an area for the dogs to go play...the most they got is a walk from a dirty kennel to a clean one...

I can honestly see both sides of humans vs. animals - but really, abusing or murdering, no matter who is the victim, is not okay, and punishment should really fit the crime.

Psychos who murder people are either put away for life or executed because they are scum who shouldn't be in society. But in the same way - I think people who torture or kill animals are also a low form scum as well. I don't like to value human life over animal life, or animal over human life when it comes to punishment. But I think if you're sick enough to actually kill or torture someone or something, then there's something seriously wrong with you, and there's no place for you in the real world.

  • Jelenny, many thanks for what you do! If there weren't fosters out there like you, I wouldn't have my beautiful Isabelle. She was rescued from a meth lab in South Carolina and brought up to New England. FI and I found her on CL and brought her home the next day. I wish I could foster dogs, but I don't think I could deal with handing them off to their new owners. I guess you have to look at it positively and know that they finally have a forever home.
In Response to Re: What do you think the punishment should be : You're still saying that human can begin to understand though. I disagree. I will never even begin to understand why I was hurt in the way I was. I will never recover from what happened to me. I carry that fear and pain with me every day. If the person that hurt me came up to me today, apologized, and tried to explain I'd punch him in the face. Why does that pain mean less than that of an animal?
    Posted by betrothed123
Obviously it's different for every person, and I can't speak for anyone but myself. I guess what I should have said originally was that I have learned to understand, not completely, not why I was hurt, not why it was me they chose, but why the person did it.

It's a constant battle, but I try to separate myself out of the equation and say "Ok why did this person do this action?", not "Why me?" But that's me.

I know, I sound like I'm backpeddling, and I'm sorry if I'm sounding like a jerk. FWIW, I am truly sorry for whatever it was that happened to you. It's something I never wish on anyone, regardless of who they are.
Spoken like someone who has never been a victim of one of these crimes. I love you, Mara, but I cannot at all agree with the bolded statement. I know from experience that not even an apology is enough to stop the total fear of anyone you don't recognize if you've experienced something like that. I think there should be a sliding scale like any crime perpetrated against a human. I don't think animals should be held in higher regard than humans.
    Posted by betrothed123
Me either. I love animals, but humans lives are more important, IMO.

Not going to lie the first few adoptions I was balling like a baby - BUT in our adoption agreement we are allowed follow ups so I put it in my mind it's see you later (though I have only seen my previous fosters at events when their new families bring them). I don't need to follow up because I get lots of emails, stories, and know I put them in really good homes...

Fostering isn't for everyone but if you can weather a few bouts of crying and "get used to it" (there will be a few I will cry over like Mandi and Brady) you end up saving more lives...so while I miss my fosters, I know what the back room is like and there are dog that need me to buy them some time...

I agree....I guess sometimes I swing to the animals above humans because I see so much bad day in and day out and the ones behind it are the humans...

I can't remember where I read the quote or exactly how it went, but it was to the degree that "only animals can suffer so inhumanely that a human is to blame..."

  • I also don't understand how many people can be so against the tortue of animals and eat factory farmed meat. Those animals are tortured from the day they are born.

That's how chickens are raised. I mean, I just think it's a little hypocritical to be all "Ohhh the poor animals" but still eat meat. That's all.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

H and I are "almost vegetarians" meaning we just never cook meat. It's not that I don't enjoy a steak or grilled chicken breast, we just tend to cook more with veggies and pasta. But most of the meat we use is venison that he killed and we butcher ourselves. I occasionally buy steak from the local market, but it's not factory farmed. I think we are going to buy a pig and cow, halfsies with my parents, from a local farmer, then we'll butcher them.
  • AATB agreed!

sometimes I stoop to their level wishing that they would get done to them what they do to the animals, but I suppose that makes me no better, but I would be happy with proper punishment and not just a slap on the wrist.

  • I think the punishment should be as harsh as legally possible. I think people who hurt animals in any way are the absolute scum of the earth. There seem to be quite a few sickfucks here in my area. Someone broke into the petting zoo one night recently and shot a bunch of the animals to death with bbguns, cut off a bunch of the bunnies heads and put them on stakes and stole a bunch of baby animals that were never found. It is just absolutely disgusting.
  • Nebb omg! Serial killer alert.
