Internships/Field Placements?

Hey, everyone! Does anyone here have to do a internship/field placement for their major? I'm a social work major and have to do a field placement for my senior year. I just got back from my interview with the agency I was placed with. I was so nervous!

The director told me that she has one more student that she needs to interview, so I won't know if she'll take me on for about 2 weeks. She said that my resume looked really strong and the interview went well, so she doesn't see any reason why she wouldn't take me as an intern, but she still needs to do the other interview.

So...I guess I'll just hope the other candidate doesn't outshine me?

Re: Internships/Field Placements?

  • I did 5 different internships over 3 years. Landed me my job 1 year before I graduated. It was pretty nice senior year not worrying about finding a job, or grad school (they offered to pay for that too).

I would keep applying, just in case this doesn't work out.

    Good luck.

<div>Doesn't work like that. The field placement office at my program places me with an agency based on the application that I submitted. I interview with them and if both of us agree that it's a good placement, I return a slip to the field office. If not, I have to tell the field office and they'll give me a new placement. I'm not supposed to contact any agencies on my own.</div><div>

  • Five internships? Holy banana pancakes...

I'm a double major in pre-medicine and Director of Christian Education. For pre-med, internships are reccommended (summer, over breaks, etc.) but not required. For DCE, after I graduate, if I want to be certfied within the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, I have to do a one-year long internship as an assistant DCE at a church my university will place me at...anywhere in the United States. Kinda scary. Otherwise, I'd just graduate with a bachelors in Christian Education Leadership, but wouldn't have Lutheran Church clergy certification.
  • <div>Hello!</div><div>
</div><div>I am currently working on my MSW at Michigan State and the process is about the same here. I don't think MSU arranges for the agency to interview more students than they take on so that's weird that that'd even be an issue. I'm sure you'll be fine and I hope it is an amazing experience for you! My BA is in Psych so I didn't have to have an internship so the Field Placement app process was a little intimidating when I got to grad school.</div><div>

My school had a requirement for a minimum of 50 weeks of internships for graduation, but it really helped all the students. So it did take me 5 yrs to graduate, but only 4 yrs of class. It was really nice, because for my last 3 yrs I wouldn't go to class year-round, but do two quarters on, one off, ect.

Engineering is a lot different in the office than in school :)

And I always say be safer, rather than sorry and left without an intership. I don't like leaving myself without a plan B. If you plan B is just going to school/other job, thats great. Just have a plan B in case the other candidate gets the position.

    Good luck!

ETA: Sorry, didn't realize your school agency was the one who set everything up. I guess each place has its own - for me, I found everything on my own and told the school. Some students took the route you are doing. On the flip side, what if you find an awesome opportunity on your own? Would they not give you credit for it?
  • I have to do an internship for my major of creative writing and my minor of editing and publishing. You are lucky enough to get "placed" somewhere though. We have to go out and apply to the publishing companies that offer internships and hope for the best. I've applied quite a few places already, and haven't hear back from a single one. I'm a little early with my looking though, usually you don't look until the summer before senior year.

It sounds like your interview went great though! :) If she said all that to you I don't know why she wouldn't hire you...

  • Im in a diploma level CSSW (Community Social Service Work) program and we have 3 placements, I just had my interview with my last placement yesterday and it went well. Our program will not send overlap anywhere, so if we had decided it was a bad placement for me (either me or the placement), then they might send someone else, but they definatly wouldnt be making us compete for it.

Im stoked to be on my last placement, and honestly have been sooooo benefitted by having 3, such vastly different experiences! What kind of placement is it? Mine have been at a mental health rehabilitivate program, an adoption support agency that works closely with the foster system, and this last one will be at a womans shelter/transition/half-way house.
