A lot of you travel/have been traveling...

so hopefully you will be able to help answer my question.  Lately, I've been getting crazy bad headaches - not quite a migrane, but verging on one.  I'm leaving tomorrow for a church conference in Indiana, and I am flying.  Am I allowed to take a full (well, half full) bottle of tylonel in my carry-on?  And does it have to be in the little one-quart bag?

I realize this sounds completely inane, but I don't really want to have to buy a new bottle through security if I can help it, when I already have one, and getting stopped  at security for illegal items at 4:30am is not my idea of a good time.  TIA for your help!

I carry excedrin everywhere and have never been stopped.

Now, my cuticle scissors on the other hand with a quarter inch blade?  That was definitely the mark of a terrorist according to TSA.

I'm sorry about your headaches!  Does the tylenol work for you?  My headaches laugh in the face of tylenol.
  • Oh, thanks Joy!  Yeah, Tylonel has been helping...I'm taking Excedrin in my carry-on for any migraines that may pop up over the week, but I know if I don't at least have Tylonel for the flight, I'm not going to make it.

As long as it isn't liquids tylenol you can take it. I don't go anywhere without my advils, for reals.

here is a list of stuff that might help you...

  • If you mean the pills, sure it's fine.  If you mean liquid, then it has to be in a 3oz bottle and in a clear zip lock bag so they can see it.

  • You can always check the baggage guidelines for carryons on your airline's website.

Actually, you can take medication/medical supplies on the plane and it doesn't have to adhere to the 3 oz rule.  I recently flew and was allowed to bring a full bottle of cough syrup along with a large bottle of contact solution (qualifies as medical supplies) on with me.  You just have to declare it to security before you go through the scanners.

From tsa.gov -" Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint"

Edit:  Here's a better link with more detailed information about what you can carry on above 3 oz; http://www.tsa.gov/311/311-carry-ons.shtm

  • Oh wow, thanks, that's real helpful, LP!

Palm - I looked and it didn't say yes and it didn't say no, so I thought I'd ask =]

  • I travel for work and eat Excedrine like candy.  My purse is like a pharmacy.  Over the counter meds are no problem.  Prescription meds have to have your name on them or you could get in trouble.

I fly out of the Indy airport all of the time.  If you are talking about liquid medication, there is a special line in security that you have to go through.  It will take longer, but they will let you through.

If it is not liquid, no problem.

Have fun at the conference and enjoy Indiana : )
  • You should be fine, but do check the laws of the country/ies you're flying into if you are taking any out of the ordinary prescription medication (and bring a perscription with you in those instances). Have fun!

(oh wait, I see you wrote 'indiana' not 'india' as I'd skimmed it to read, thus the country you're flying into is actually the same as the one you're departing from and my advice doesn't really apply!)
