S/O Lent

I'm a PW, whatever. But the post below got me thinking...

If you're giving up something for Lent, which of the following best classifies you?

Re: S/O Lent

  • I used to (try) to give up things for Lent because I was told that I had to and that is just what people in my church did. Now, I don't anymore.

  • I'm not Catholic and I've never given things up for Lent, but the priest at my high school gave a homily once about how Lent is about improving yourself and not depriving yourself. I thought that was really nice.

I do agree that it's improvement and not deprivation. If you give up something that you really love (internet, soda, coffee, etc.) instead of something that you just kind of like (wearing dangly earrings), then I think that it teaches self-control, patience, etc.
  • I'm Catholic and I do positive things during Lent rather than givine things up.

JMO but I think the Supreme Being is more concerned about what we do to contribute to the good rather than some silly thing like giving up candy.

This Lent, I will be cooking an extra shift at the homeless shelter. And no, I'm not a goodie two shoes. Just want to put more in than I take out

    I like that mindset.

We always used that as an option growing up.  It did involve some form or self-control and personal improvement - like a new year's resolution with an expiration date.

This year, I'm going smoke-free (which I said at New Year resolution time too).  A friend of mine did it for Lent a few years ago, and he never looked back.  I think having it relate to faith may help me turn it over and finally quit.
  • I'm giving up meat this year. I did it a couple years  ago and it made me feel better knowing that animals didn't suffer on my behalf.
  • I don't think giving up candy is necessarily a bad thing, if you're 5.  It's a good way to also teach children about what Jesus gave up for us.  It can teach self control and discipline.

I also think the mindset of doing something good rather than depriving yourself is more fulfilling.  It also depends on the person though.
