Liquid Intake Question

I know that you should have 8-8 oz glasses of water a day (minimum.) Does anything else go towards this? I know coffee doesn't because it is a diuretic, but what about decaf green tea or something? I just have the hardest time drinking water, I try to drink as much as I can but I know I would drink more (good-for-me) liquids if I could have some variety. FWIW, I also buy those little packets that you mix into bottled water, but I don't like how most of those taste. Any input or suggestions would be helpful, TIA!

I don't know if this is the "official" rule or not, but I personally count all uncaffeinated beverages as water (so I'll include things like flavored seltzer, decaf tea, etc.).  Flavored sparkling water is really good too.

  • Yeah, definitely count it if you're drinking Crystal Light or something like that.
  • I brew Decafinated Luzianne Tea and drink it all the time and count it towards my 8 glasses.  It's delcious.

  • I saw someone else posted about Crystal Light...which def counts as water to me.  :)  It's not bad - no calories, but no nutritional value either.

  • I think I read somewhere that the new "water rule" is your weight in lbs dvided by 2 = oz. of water per day.
The water in your food also contributes, so if you had soup, it's helping to hydrate you.

I was always told to just monitor the color of the water coming OUT of your body! Should be a lemonade shade, any darker and you are slightly dehydrated!

I personally don't like drinking plain water very much either. I'm not a fan of sugar substitutes, but I've found that lemon or mint water is my go-to. If I don't have fresh lemon slices, I'll just add a bit of lemon juice. Just add peppermint or spearmint extract to a bottle for mint water. It's delicious! (and way cheaper than buying bottles of MetroMint or whatever it's called at Kroger).

  • I'm with PP's. I tend to count any decaffinated, non-sugary drink as water. I had my neurologist advise me to add a splash of gatoraide to each bottle of water I drank in a day. She said not only would it help my migraines but it would help me to stay hydrated better. I know make a 16oz bottle about 2oz gatoraide and 14oz water. It took  me a little while to get use to but it is way better than plain water.

  • Yes you can count these things in your daily liquid intake but, still try to drink the recommended intake of water on top of those. Just my opinion. I consume a gallon a day on top of things likfe coffee and green tea
