Something old...

Just trying to find out how "old" my something old needs to be. I have a pair of earrings my FI gave me that match the new necklace I bought just for the dress. But they are only from 3 years ago...does that count as old enough?

Re: Something old...

  • Seriously?   There is no right or wrong answer to your question.   It's whatever works for you.  Your marriage won't be invalidated by not-old-enough jewelry.   And if you want to be technical, metals like gold and stones like diamonds hae been around "forever" anyway.

  • Avion: =D

I always kind of assumed that it should be older than your relationship with your future hubby. But as Avion said... you won't get some funky voodoo spell put on you if you don't wear an old enough pair of earrings. Just go with something you didn't buy for the wedding. That's considered "new."

  • As long as in your mind it is something old then go for it. :)
  • Hi Amyspeight! Don't stress too much about this. It doesn't matter at all that the item is three years old. Picking your 'something old' is fun and cute and it can be anything you want. Usually something old would be something that used to belong to your mother or your grandmother or something that's been in your family for a long time because the something old part represents continuity. Since it's not something brand new that you bought just for the wedding, of course it counts! You can't go wrong!
  • most people go with a family heirloom, but i also might pick something like a 'relationship heirloom'.  my FI gave me a heart charm bracelet a couple years ago and had it engraved with "mine" and the date we officially became a couple.  I might attach that to my bouquet, as a sort of "bringing our relationship from the past to the future" symbol.

I agree with PPs. it's not like these are hard and fast rules. as long as the item has been used before, its no longer 'new', and i think you'd be fine. =)
