How much is too much?

There is a post on the HM board talking about using a HMR for her EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLAR honeymoon.  I mean, yeah, it's your money, but holy fluck, I hope you're traveling around the world for that much.

Re: How much is too much?

  • I saw that one, it amazed me.

I wouldnt spend over $5k for 1 week... not over $3k for any non-honeymoon week.

  • Money is relative. If you make 20k a year, sure 8k on a honeymoon is extensive. If you make over 6 digits, its a couple months paychecks.
  • If I had that money I'd spend it.  Maybe if travel is a huge priority in your life it's worth it moreso than getting a house or having nice clothes.

  • If I could have afforded an 8 thousand dollar honeymoon, I would've gone on one.

But I don't know what an HMR is. Embarrassed.

  • HMR - honeymoon registry

If you need a HMR you shouldn't have an $8000 HM.  Otherwise, if you plan and can afford an $8000 vacation, I'll be snugly packed away in your luggage.

Me either, Fische.  But I tried to find the link and couldn't.

I wouldn't be surprised if we spent a good chunk of change (not $8k) on our honeymoon.  But we don't really travel by ourselves too often.  Mostly just to visit family and friends.

A former reg here definitely admited to spending 5 figures on her honeymoon. And I'm sure there are several.

I think if your parents pay for your wedding, that might depend a LOT on what you can spend. Also, it's all relative to what you have. I had this discussion about Carrie Underwood spending $500,000 on her wedding. Who cares? That amount means very little to her in the long run.

Take this with a grain of salt, because we might be spending almost $1,000 on one meal over our honeymoon. (But no, my HM won't cost over $8,000.)

  • We spent a big chunk of money for our HM, but we felt that it would be worth it, and honestly, it was.

We stayed in a really nice hotel for 10 days, all of our meals were included, even snacks were included.

We felt that we deserved a nice trip, and I don't regret it at all. We waited almost 7 years to get married, and it was just a way to treat ourselves.
  • Now that I actually know what HMR is, I think it's in poor taste that they have one for their expensive honeymoon.  Is there anything on there that is affordable for people?

H was commenting on the Clinton wedding this weekend and it costing $3 million. He didn't see how that could possibly happen, even after I explained that they everything we did times 10, with security and all that jazz, and the designer dress.

  • Yeah, I don't know about a HMR for an 8,000 dollar honeymoon. If you can afford one, take one, but I don't know about having your guests cough up 8k for a honeymoon you've planned.

Don't forget the $15,000 they're spending on port a potties
  • See, if Lyndausvi said she spent that much on her honeymoon, then fine, because I know she didn't run around begging her guests for it.  This person is actually begging her guests for money to pay for her over the top HM.
  • It's up there with the whole "I can't believe your FI spent that much on a ring!" thing. If you can afford it, more power to you.

On the flip side of the coin, if you can afford it, you probably wouldn't be registering for it.

  • I say take as expensive of a honeymoon as you want.  My girlfriend took a 1 month honeymoon.  She cruised from Australia to Hawaii... stopping along tahiti, moorea and stuff.  I don't even want to know how much that cost.  I say if you can afford it go.

If her HMR made that much, why not use it?  If she takes a 4k honeymoon, does she get the rest in cash?

  • I don't think it would be that hard to spend $8k on a honeymoon. In fact, if I had it to spare, I could do it quite easily! But that poster apparently doesn't have it and I can't imagine what kind of thinking led to planning a honeymoon that expensive without having the cash in hand to do it.

Yes. And I totally missed the HMR part. Nevermind, then. I don't think HMRs are okay in the case of a $500 HM.

  • Chances are even if she registers for the 8k honeymoon, if it's not paid off, her and her H are giong to pay the difference, no?

What's the difference if guests give them cash and they put it towards their honeymoon?

I had a lot of people in their cards to us at our wedding say "use this for your honeymoon..."

No no no... she's registering for a honeymoon that she's already planned, but can't pay for until the guests pony up the dough. At least, as far as I understand it.

I heard on the local country station that Carrie Underwood sold her wedding pictures to People for $2 MM, so she actually made $1.5 MM on her $500,000 wedding.

And ditto Mandy.  If you can afford it, and it's important to you, do it.

In fairness, even though I hate HMRs, I think most sane couples use them to offset the price of the honeymoon, not to pay off the whole thing.

I'm waiting almost a year after the wedding to honeymoon, and we're expecting to pay around 5K for a week at an all-inclusive resort.  Some minor but nice upgrades could easily bump us up to 8K.
