Re: Its Friday

  • Morning ladies! I did some shopping yesterday- needed new sneakers and ended up buying those and two pairs for boots for under $100. Famous Footwear clearance sale.

I'm slowly starting to buy wedding stuff, so a couple things came in the mail yesterday.

I'm making dinner for FI & my parents tonight. I can't decide between minestrone soup (it's been so cold here) and just some easy baked chicken or something.
  • just kidding, I'm still working on it.
    image
  • Really? What are you looking for? I love DSW, but there isn't one super close, so I do most of my shopping with them online. Damn rewards points- I get so many coupons I "have' to use them.
  • oh YAY, well then i'll aw in a thread now :)

    image
  • Yes, thanks! The centerpieces were simple, but were super pretty, I loved them! It's funny how many things dont phase you the day of, like we had colored napkins, I didn't even notice the day of.
    image
  • Britt I love them!

Also I LOVE DSW. All of my favorite shoes seem to be from DSW.

After work we're going to a friend's house to watch my Aggies play in the Cotton Bowl. We don't have cable so we are professional moochers when it comes to sports (don't worry, we bring beer).
  • Edie- I love the Famous Footwear shoes. I was looking around yesterday and a pair of shoes I bought at DSW were there for $25 more than I had paid, but I think FF sales tend to be better and more frequent.
  • 2 hours of traffic?  Ugh, I hate that.  I work not too far outside of Philly and every once in a while I get stuck in traffic like that and it's the WORST.  This morning, it took me 20 minutes to get through the toll booth by work and I was so annoyed.  People around here don't know how to merge!

Edie - love those boots!  I have a similar pair.

Tomorrow we're heading to Ikea to pick up new bedroom furniture.  I'm so excited - our new king mattress is being delivered on Tuesday!

  • Brittany, I love the pics you posted from tinypics! I haven't gotten a chance to check out your photobucket link yet. But I'm also really loving the new sig pic too!

MissSunShine, that's an awesome price! I love clearance sales.

I'm wearing my favorite color, dark turquoise blue, for some good luck that I need today.

    I'm so happy it's Friday!

  • Good Morning everyone!

    Your pics are beautiful, Brittany!

I always have the hardest time finding boots. I guess I have freakishly large calves for my shoe size, so I can never find ones that fit properly.

Furniture shopping sounds fun. Did you get a set, or mix and match it?

Be careful, we had a frame from them and it did not hold up very well. I love their storage stuff, but their furniture i'm not such a fan of, just my 2 cents :)

We've already picked out our furnitiure for the new house :) haha

Thanks everyone, our photographer was AMAZING! :)

  • Good morning everyone! Congrats of the bedroom furniture, we did a huge Ikea shop for the new house last Sunday! Poor FI hates going there with me, since it means hours of assembly, LOL! Can't wait to see your pics Britt, I'll check them out later. Trying to find a place to get my hep a vaccine before we leave on Sunday, but my doctor's office is closed and I keep getting told to go to a walk in clinic. I really do not want to go hang out in a room full of germs 2 days before our trip! I had to keep putting it off since I've been so sick. Erg for last minute!!

  • Our current bedroom furniture is Ikea and I've had it for close to 10 years.  It's held up great - in fact, the other day when we were giving a tour of our new house, a friend asked if it was new!

We're going with a set.  Hemnes in black-brown.

Furniture shopping is so much fun.  Our house is almost triple the size of our old apartment, so we had to buy a lot of new furniture to fill it.  Our bedroom is the last room we have to work on!

Furniture shopping is so fun! I especially love that H and I have very similar tastes so we tend to agree on most choices.

Do you have a Bob's Discount Furniture near you? We got our china hutch there and love it. They may be slightly more expensive than Ikea, but at least it will come assembled. Also since H is so tall, he feels like a giant sitting on most of Ikea's furniture.

  • I just Googled Bob's Discount Furniture and there are none in PA.  We have an Ashley Furniture store about 5 minutes down the road from us, so we got most of our furniture there and we got great deals on everything.  We do still need some sort of china hutch though, so maybe we'll check it out.  Some of their NJ locations really aren't that far from us.

We found our other furniture pretty easily, but the bedroom set has been kind of a pain.  We went to a few of the larger furniture stores and the stuff they have is either way too big and bulky or way too expensive.  So Ikea it is!

I love that series! FI thought it was 'too traditional' for him, so we ended up with a Malm set in medium brown. He let me choose the new sofa, so it was a compromise. ;-)

I didn't get the bed frame though, it seemed a little flimsy. So we're going to upholster a headboard ourselves and paid for the upgraded metal frame. It will probably take us forever to decide on a fabric though....

Also just discovered that Ikea is awesome for curtain rods, and with a house with 20+ windows I need some deals!

  • Good morning!
One thing I've done (or my dad has done for me) is put wood glue in all the holes while you're screwing things in for Ikea furniture.  I have a couple shelves and cupboard-type-things that have held up for 7 years and a million moves with that trick.

Also, for DIY stuff, has anyone checked out ana-white.com?  I built a bench based on one of the plans there, and am looking to build a few more things.

Also, has anyone had trouble trying to figure out how to merge your's and FI's styles when moving in together?  I love my current set-up in my parents house, and think it is elegant and sexy and perfect, but my FI thinks it is too feminine (it is very feminine) and wants to incorporate the stuff I love, but have it be more of a reflection of both of us.

H and I moved in together after about 10 months of dating, back in 2007.  Honestly, we didn't really have much trouble.  We are both neat freaks, so luckily that worked out perfectly.  We each had our own things at that point and we just merged everything together and made it work (for example, his love seat didn't match my couch, so we got a cover for the love seat).  He did have a few questionable wall hangings (like a massive Dumb and Dumber poster) but I sucked it up and let him hang them for a while.  I eventually got sick of them and explained that we're adults now and I really didn't want our apartment looking like a college dorm room.  He agreed.

When we moved into our new house in November, we picked out everything together.  Oddly enough, we agreed on just about everything - from furniture to paint colors to decor.  He did give a lot of input on the decor, mostly just concerned about things looking too feminine.  But we were able to find curtains and bedding that he liked and I don't think our house looks overly feminine at all.  It's a perfect mix of the two of us.

We haven't mastered it yet.  Mishmash is the style - quirky, yet fun ;)

When xH and I divorced we split up the furniture betw the 3 of us (since son had to get an apartment).  We also donated a lot of stuff to a halfway house in the city.  Once I got into my own apartment, I ended up giving away most of the stuff and buying new.  So when I moved in with H a few years back, we incorporated my stuff in with theirs (his son was still living at home).  They were two guys living on their own for many years with their varied assortment of IKEA type stuff.  Then I came along with my traditional camelback couch and a few antique end tables and rolltop desk.  We did end up replacing some of their stuff with mine.  We also bought some new pieces together, but its still a decorating wreck but it works.  Oh, and his xW was a huge fan of the southwestern style - I could not wait to get rid of it all, but we had to do it slowly and undercover since his son was still living with us at that time.  I didn't want to remove all evidence of his mother.  A lot of stuff we put in the basement for storage and he ended up taking some of it to his new apartment.

YES! And when you do find some, the zippers wear out super fast from the stress? I'm a 5.5, and my calves don't look huge to me, but nothing fits. I had to return like 6 pairs of socks MIL got me for Christmas: she got me child sizes for my tiny feet, and they cut off my circulation something awful.

Our house is mostly my stuff, since H didn't live on his own before we got married. We are largely holding off on buying furniture or decorative stuff until we own a place. We just aren't ambitious wenough to move things more than once if we can avoid it.

  • When H and I moved into our first apartment together, I had a few things, mostly kitchen items, from my previous apartment and he was moving out of his parents house. He brought his bedroom furniture and I brought mine as well, minus my bed which was smaller. So we had to buy new living room furniture together. It went surprisingly well and we agreed on most things. I think H was very happy that I insisted we find a couch that he could fully lay down for when he wanted to relax or take a nap. Surprisingly to myself, we went more traditional than I thought I would. But l love that we've picked out most of our home items together so that it really feels like us.

  • Edie- It really doesn't come out at all.  So the furniture has held up through moves, but been kind of a PITA to move.  For the cupboard/cabinet things I've left the stuff in them (one was being used as a DVD shelf, one as a dresser with baskets holding the socks/underwear/dresser items) we ziptied the handles closed, then wrapped a bungie cord around the bottom then moved it all without taking anything out.

My stuff is vintage-y french cottage-y.  I have a dresser and vanity from 1870 that's been passed down for a few generations, an upholstered bench that I built, an antique-y looking love-seat from Urban Outfitters and a couple wing-back chairs I am working up to re-upholstering.  I'm incredibly attached to it all.  My kitchen stuff is less important to me, but still follows the same theme.  Vintage cannisters, homemade spice rack, antique embroidered tablecloth.

I'm going antique-ing this weekend, so I'm trying to keep a look out for stuff to add that will make everything feel less feminine.
