Processional/ Recessional songs?

I just got an email from our wedding musician asking about our song selection. She was talking about doing "canon in D" for the processional and suggested "trumpet tune" for the recessional. I realized I've never thought of doing anything other than "Bridal Chorus" by Wagner for the processional, and Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" for the recessional. which is what I think I'll stick with, cliche or not.

What is everyone else doing for their processional/recessional songs?

Re: Processional/ Recessional songs?

  • We are doing Canon for BMs and me, and then Ode to Joy for the recessional (followed up Trumpet Voluntary which will still be playing as guests are leaving).
  • Personally, I really don't like the Bridal Chorus/Wedding March.  But if you like it, then you should go with it.

    Our processional is:
Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring - Seating of grandparents and FI's parents
Trumpet Voluntary - For bridesmaids and ring bearer
Canon in D - Me escorted by my mom

    Recessional - Over the Rainbow

Everything is being played by 3 violins and a cello (my cousins play violin and their friend plays cello)
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Iris by the goo goo dolls and Wonderwall by oasis- seating of guests and mothers
White wedding by Billy Idol- FI and his dad and the bridal party (personally I didnt want this but FI hasn't asked for much and I am okay with him deciding.)
Blackbird by the beatles- Me and my father.

My little brother is playing all the ceremony music acoustically. I really can't wait to see him play, I actually may cry just seeing that before the wedding even starts. I usually do cry when he plays his guitar.

  • Aw, I like Wedding March. It's from Mendelssohn's music that he wrote for A Midsummer Night's Dream, and I remember when I did that play in school, my drama teacher saying when we all grew up and got married to remember that play and think of fairies wishing us well on our wedding day. Which is super lame, and weird that I remember it so fondly considering I hated this teacher, ha, but it makes me smile.

BUT! We're not using it, ha. It just kind of doesn't go with the rest of the day. If we were having a church wedding, I totally would. That and I'd want to do the wedding music from The Sound of Music.

    Instead, processional:
Family/bridal party: "Your Hand in Mine", Explosions in the Sky
Me, the bride, yay!: "Northern Sky", Nick Drake

Recessional: "I Melt With You", a Saves the Day cover

    Anniversary
  • Processional: Bridal Party "This Year's Love" -David Grey
Dad and I " One Thousand Years" - Christian Perrri (Both piano versions)

Recessional: "The Best of My Love" - The Emotions

  • i'm not sure about BM yet, but I'll be coming in to Canon in D and I haven't decided the rest yet.  The church organist will be playing piano and she's bringing in a flutist (or flautist depending on who you ask).

I was orginally going to hire a trio or quartet but decided against it.  I've always wanted that piece played.  Other than that, it really didn't matter what is played.

  • I personally want anything but "traditional wedding music"! We want to be different. I dont know where all of it is going to be at but we are having some phantom of the opera songs, jason mraz songs, colbie callat, coldplay and music like that. Hoping to have zero normal wedding songs.

  • Mine will be a surprise, so it could be quite traditional. My sis worked it out with an acoustic guitar player from h wedding, and I told her to give him the freedom to play what he is comfortable with

  • I had initially considered doing Canon in D and the wedding march, but then my pianist started going through some possibilities and I ended up liking the ones I picked a lot more.

For the seating we'll have various songs played by our pianist and violinist. I gave them free reign since I know they'll play great music.
For the mother's seating, they're playing Gymnopedie by Satie.
For the WP processional, they're playing Air in G by Bach.
For my processional, they're playing Arioso by Bach.
For the recessional, they're playing Spring from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi.

My ceremony is in a church, so we were limited by what we could and could not use, but I'm really excited about my ceremony music, especially with my very talented pianist! It's going to be awesome!
  • You guys have great taste. I'm looking forward to our music just for the fact that we're having a harp/guitar duo. What I'm really excited about, however, is our reception: big band music!

<div>I am jealous of the big band music for your reception! That's going to be so awesome!</div>
  • The WP is walking in to an instrumental version of Fields of Gold (my dad's idea and one of my favorite songs of all time). FI and I are walking down the aisle to Have a Little Faith in Me.

We haven't chosen a recessional yet, but I'm leaning towards Eight Days a Week or I Wanna Hold Your Hand--we need to incorporate the Beatles somewhere in the ceremony.

  • Processional is Canon in D by a flute quartet...not live, by the DJ
Recessional is Morning has Broken by Cat Stevens

It took us forever to find these and make the final decision...now that the programs have been printed it is set in stone!  LOL
We also put the lyrics to our first dance (We get to Feel it All by Indigo Girls) on the back of our program...

  • Very cool choices, everyone!

We're somewhat limited, as our ceremony is in a Catholic church, but I'm pretty pumped for the songs we selected - should sound really good in the space (it's cathedral-like, with very high ceilings, etc.):

Processional: Prelude to the Te Deum by Charpetier
Recessional: Royal Fireworks Music by Handel
  • Jesu Joy of Man - mothers and wedding party Cannon in D - bride processional Trumpet Voluntary - recessional
