Wedding Reception Forum

Need some help with venues please, I am feeling so frustrated!

Hey everyone, our wedding is planned for September next year. We have about 45 guests. We were planning on having a untraditional wedding by renting a lake house at the guadalupe river. I was thinking of a BBQ style reception, no Dj only sound system, pretty easy going and casual. The budget is set at $3500.

Most lake houses don't allow a group that big on their property due to possible sewage problems. The few ones that do allow a large group charge btw $4k-$5. I need a house that is big enough to accomodate the bridal party at least. Most places wont allow parking for more than 2 vehicles per cabin. I had a look at all these houses like hideout on the guadalupe etc and the parking situation is bad.

My fiance is getting quiet annoyed cause he doesn't want to spend a whole lot of money for the wedding. He said he'd rather go to Vegas and stay at a Casino. I bought my wedding dress already.

I am getting so frustrated in finding a place for us. I don't know what to do anymore. Should I cut the guest list down? Should I call the big bash off and we elope? Any ideas?

Thank you so much!!

Kat

  • If you haven't already, post this on the local Austin board.  I think that board is pretty active and they should be able to help you with venue ideas.  You may have to scrap the river idea though.
  • If they won't allow more than two vehicles you really can't cut the list down (unless it's just an elopement). I'd suggest changing your plans (unless your local board can help you out). But it doesn't have to on the river or Vegas, there are other options.
  • Is there a park on the river you can use for your ceremony? It was really important for FI and I to get married on the ocean, so we found a state park for our ceremony site. We just had to write a letter of intent to the department of conservation and we have the park for free.

  • Could you price out shuttles for your guests?  Have them park at one place and drive them over.

You can rent school buses really cheap.  Especially on the weekends when they are not being used.

They also make really nice port-a-pottys now.  Not just the ones you see at construction sites.  These ones look like actual bathrooms.

  • This might not be an option for you, but we are having a small wedding with less than 50 guests as well.  Untraditional for us will mean renting campgrounds where we will have our ceremony and reception.  Guests who choose to camp with us will be able to stay for the alcoholic beverages after the barbecue.  Perhaps you can do something similar at the Lake?  In my state, campgrounds rent for $14/night.   That means we will be spending less than $100 on our venue.

Happy to be the Future Mrs. C.
