Just Engaged and Proposals

Put a Ring On It

I wanted to share my proposal story :) I proposed to my gf on Valentine's Day, and here's how it went down:

My gf (now fiancée!) and I started talking seriously about marriage about 6 months ago.  I actually got the ring probably around Thanksgiving.  But this will be my second marriage so I was initially very gun-shy about the whole idea.  When we started dating, I was adamant I never wanted to marry again, and when I started to warm up to the idea, I still said I wanted to wait until I was really ready.  Even though I knew I was getting closer to "ready," every time we started talking about a timeline for marriage, I'd get all weird about it and say I was going to wait, like, 10 years (because I am a total snot...and because I thought it would be better to surprise her by asking sooner than get her hopes up if I wasn't really ready).

So I was planning to propose on our 2 year anniversary (which is later this month), but then on Valentine's day, everything just "felt right."  We had a really great day...I sent her flowers, I was actually enjoying Valentine's day for the first time ever :) her awesome family sent a really sweet Valentine's card...We were joking about how if I was going to wait 10 years to propose, I'd better have some really amazing, romantic proposal planned!  But then she got serious and said "but seriously, if you aren't going to propose forever, we should stop talking about it because it makes me sad and disappointed to know I'm going to have to wait so long."

That got me thinking...I was really stressed out about how I was going to propose anyway and I was sort of dreading having to come up with some elaborate scheme...and since we'd had such a nice, romantic day, I decided it was time to bite the bullet!!  So anyway, I'd made her a Valentine's gift of a mix cd with all these love songs on it by bands we've seen/we like and I made a little book with all the lyrics from the songs and my favorite lines highlighted.  We were out for a fancy V-Day dinner at one of our favorite restaurants and after dinner I gave her the book of lyrics and she was looking at it going "aww" at all the different songs :)  When she got to a song about a proposal (the song is called "Question" by the Old 97's...it a cute little song if you've never heard it), she looked at me and smiled and I said "I know I keep saying I'm going to wait years and years to propose, but I just can't wait anymore."  And her jaw basically drops and she says "Are you serious??!" So I pull out the ring box and then it's all over...I ask her, she's crying and saying "yes of course" ... it was pretty great.  We ordered champagne to celebrate :) (and once the restaurant realized what was up, the gave it to us on the house, which was nice of them).

So now we get to start planning a wedding! Which is both exciting and scary.  Out of the 2 of us, I am definitely the type-A planner, but since this is her first (and hopefully only!) wedding, I want it to be everything she wants it to be.  We're considering all our options, but we do know that we're probably going to wait a couple of years so that we can save up.  We know we're going to be hosting the wedding ourselves because her family just isn't in the position to help (which is obviously fine and understandable) and my family isn't onboard with the whole "gay" thing...or even the whole "remarraige" thing, for that matter (which is sort of annoying...but not because they won't help pay, more because they are just really negative and judgey about the engagement generally).

Anyway, I'm really enjoying my time so far on TK.  Can't wait to get to know you all more!

Oh, and I don't have a photo of her ring for whatever reason, but she just gave me mine yesterday.  Check it out, DNA :)
