Collagen lip injections?

Has anyone had experience with this? If so, would you recommend it?

I've been looking at it because it's not too expensive and it only lasts up to three months... which would be great since if it sucked it'd be gone in time for the wedding but if it rocked I could get it redone for the wedding!

Thoughts?

Re: Collagen lip injections?

  • ugh, don't. injected lips always look so fake.

  • I wouldn't do it unless you want to look like a duck.

  • I am doing it to slightly fill out my upper lip to balance it out with the bottom.   I thought a little enhancement would be nice for all of the wedding photos, but I don't want to make such a big change that people would notice after the collagen has been broken down.  I haven't done it yet, but it is on the to do list.  If it is something YOU want to do, you should do it.
  • I would try a lip plumper - I like the Victoria's Secret lip plumper.  It's kind of pricey ($36ish?) but I think it works really well.

If you want collagen lips, go for it.  I just would be afraid that they would screw them up and they would look too full or fake, even if you told whoever was doing them not to. And then there isn't really a way to fix that. Scary.

  • If you want to do it, go for it.  Definitely test run it awhile out before your wedding just in case you don't like it.  If you do, please come back & post before/after pictures.  I'm curious since the only mental image of lip injections I have is Lisa Rinna and I hope doing it 1X wouldn't translate into that!

  • I had restylane injected into my "smile lines" yesterday. I'd had it done once before and lasted 16 months. I tried botox for the first time while I was there, to give my upper outer eye lid area a lift (a 40 year old first-time bride wanting to look like "normal"-aged bride on the photos! :)). It was 100% pain free and a lot cheaper than I'd anticipated. I tried it now to see if I'd have a bad reaction. Since it turned out great and I had no negative reaction I plan to do it before the wedding in June. If "having some work" makes you feel your best on the big day, go for it.

  • Oh my lord.  This is the most pathetic thing I've ever read here.  REALLY!?  Lip injections for your wedding day?!  UGH.

The desire to be "photo perfect" is something that the magazine and fashion inudstry- and yes, theknot also- has strived hard to instill in ALL women no matter their looks.  No matter that you got engaged while looking as you normally do every.day.  One day out of your life does NOT mean that you have to change your normal appearance.  Enhance yourself, but don't CHANGE it.  Your FI loves YOU, not some medically enhanced version "you".  Please don't do this. And to any other brides that might read this thread, perfection is never acheivable.  Just be you.  That's who your FI loves anyway.  Why make him wonder who it is that's walking down the aisle towards him?
  • Most of those lip plumpers work because of cinnamon oil so you could just try that.  Using too much can cause burns though.  Collagen is a terrible idea imo.

  • I'd avoid it. Your FI is marrying you for YOU! Don't feel like you need to change yourself for your wedding day. That is just silly and IMO a waste of money!

  • HOly crap... YOU'RE 21!!! There's no freaking way you need collagen.

    STOP LOOKING AT MAGAZINES.

I think my faith in the future just went down several notches.
  • Yes, I'm 21, and yes, my fiance loves me as I am, and yes, I am generally happy with how I am.

Thank you to the Moms on the board ;)

Now I suggest most of you here do your research. You're older and wiser women, so I'm quite surprised that you don't have a clue on how collagen works, and even more surprised that you would take the time out of your busy schedules to waste my time in replying with "you're going to look like a duckface".

  • Soap and Glory has a lip gloss that plumps lips called Mother Pucker (or something along that line) and it works great and its only about $12.

<div>Someone suffers from being a bit biitchy.  Collagen looks unnatural because newsflash, injecting goop into your lips is unnatural.  How long before the wedding would you do this? Do you plan to do it consistently for the rest of your life so you look like your wedding pictures?  What if you have an adverse reaction?  What if you get it done ahead of time but it wears unevenly and one side of your lips is bigger than the other?  What if your smile gets wonky because your lips are jacked up?   Do you see why is this problematic yet?</div>

After reading your reply, mine did too.
  • Hmm, I'm not too much older than you yet I'm smart enough to know that collagen looks ridiculous. No need for you to be a little snot.
  • Ok- I work in the for a plastic surgeon so let me help you out here- along with the other misguided and narrow minded knotties out there....

First of all, its not 'collagen' that is injected into your lips. There are 3 main products that are used to fill or enhance your lips, as well as other lines, wrinkles, scars etc. Radiesse, Restalyne and Juvederm.  The main ingredient in the injections is hyaluronic acid- which is a natural substance in your body, therefore will dissolve naturally. 90% of the patients that I have personally seen with the injections- you cant even tell because it looks so natural. Yes, some do over-do it and it looks silly, resulting in a negative reputation.

Those who are rudely disagreeing need to remember a few things. Half the time some receives a cosmetic procedure (such as injections) it is to correct a noticeable defect. The other half of the time it is to enhance their appearance. Obviously. Why is it so terrible for someone to have a procedure done that is going to help them look and feel better about themselves? You are very fortunate to feel you don't need to do that, but please consider others self esteem when you are being so harsh....
  • BTW kiki- its Botox that only last about 3 months. Fillers last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Just make sure you do your research and find a reputable and experienced plastic surgeon (not a nurse and not a primary physician).
  • To the 'ducklip/face' comments. Get a clue. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about, so why even comment. Just because you see a few celebrities that having obviously/willingly overdone it, does not mean that she will look like that. You have NO CLUE how many people have this done. Teachers, nurses, CEOs, Moms/Grandmas, men etc....even got a UPS lady! Half the time, the womens husbands cant even tell until they point it out!!  Get the facts before you judge.
  • Therefore, from your statistics there is a 1 in 10 chance her face will be messed up.  Good odds.

  • Working for a plastic surgeon doesn't make you one. It also does make you right.
  • collagen does not have to look ridiculous lol someone mentioned lisa rinna & that is not what you automatically look like after getting a lip injection. ugh i wish ppl would know what they are talking about before knocking the poor op.

if i had thin lips i'd look into something like this. i totally agree & recommend trying plumpers & glosses before going for injections. i have nice lips & i look sorta ridiculous when i use those. they look too big. you could also get your makeup done professionally & ask them to fill out your lips more & color in a way that enhances them. try these things first. if the results aren't what you want then go for it! try a little & see how it goes! of course your FI loves you like you are or he wouldn't be marrying you but i say you deserve to look how you want on your wedding day =]
  • Before you resort to medical procedures, talk to your photog.  If what you're worried about is the pics, ask them if they can photoshop something if you don't like it.  Now, don't go asking them to take 100 pounds off, or add 2 cup sizes, but if there's something that you don't want to remember exactly that way, ask.  A lot less dangerous than injections.  And WAY easier to undo if you don't like it.

  • I have my lips done about once every 2 years.  I have had collagen and Restalyne.  I only get 1 cc and IMO it looks very natural.  It helps balance my upper lip so my smile is not all gums.  I got it done the first time because my gum tissue had receded on a dental implant from a birth defect in my front tooth.

It is definitely duckface for about 3-5 days but then the swelling goes down.  It is very important to not go for a bargain and to go with a reputable experienced doctor whose work you have seen.

As I said, there are some people that CHOOSE to overdo it, causing it to look unnatural. If in fact someone did that, then yes they would look ridiculous. Was that not clear enough for you?

How am I backing up my knowledge with my opinions? Its all circumstantial evidence that pertains to the situation. I'm telling you what I know about the procedure, and what I have experienced with hundreds of patients.
  • Allison, you need to slow your roll.  Seriously.  And I really hope you don't act like such a condensending priss at your job, because that's not good for business.  I worked at an insurance company, it doesn't mean I'm somehow automatically qualified to advise you on insurance and health care issues.  Just saying.

OP:  Try other options before collagen.  If you are absolutely insistant upon doing it (which it sounds like you are, considering how you went straight to Justification Town when people nixed the idea and jumped into the smug, snotty "ZOMG you're old so you don't understaaaaand me" phase most of us grew out of in high school) don't do it right before the wedding.  For all you know, you could have a bad reaction or extended puffiness and that would kill your pictures even worse than not having it done.  Think two months or more before the day.

He loves you for you, not some substance (naturally occurring or not, it's STILL not naturally occurring in those quantities THERE) you had injected in your lips. If you're so immature that you feel you have to "measure up" in photos maybe you shouldn't be getting married. A wedding isn't about the photos, it's about the LIFELONG COMMITMENT. Maybe it is  generational thing, I don't know. I do know that I hate the plastic trend, but maybe I am beyond my years.</div><div>
