S/O Baby names

I found this on the SS website and wondered where I fell. Thought I would share. You can type in the year and it will give you the top names for that year, up to the top 1000

http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi

Also, this surprised me.

"Ending a run that started in 1955, Elvis did not make the list of 1,000 most popular baby names compiled by the Social Security Administration. The name never topped the charts, peaking at No. 312 in 1957 and making a slight comeback after Elvis Presley died in 1977. But The King's first name was in the top 1,000 for 55 straight years, something that cannot be said for, say, Barack, which has never cracked the list."

Re: S/O Baby names

  • I just decided that I really like the name Eloise and Xavier. They are getting added to the list but Xavier hasn't been vetted by DH yet.
  • In 1980- Melissa was #4.  Im not surprised since I know a lot of Melissa's around my age.

  • My name is biblical, and so it's always in the top 100.  I feel like it'll never slip.

  • My name also had a long run in the top 5.  1970-1985 it was in the top 5.  Peaking at #2 in 1979

Michelle was 11th on the list in 1981.

  • My name is never on any list, and if it is isn't isn't spelled the way I spell it.  It is also never EVER on a mug or keychain at Disney and that annoys me.

    Isabella is #1 in 2010.

    Thanks, Twilight.

eta for clarification - I think Isabella is a lovely name, but I wouldn't want it now.

  • My name was number 12 for the year I was born. That sounds about right.

Does it bother anyone else that the top names for 2009 are Jacob and Isabella? I really want to believe that it's just coincidence, but I don't think it is.

Jacob and Isabella have always been in the top 10.  Jacob because its biblical and Isabella because its been super popular for the last decade.  I dont think Twilight hurt, but its not the reason why those names are where they are.

  • They just released the 2010 names today. I'm glad we picked a unique middle name, but I am not  surprised that Alexander is so popular. Its a great name. And its only #10 in Texas, so not as popular as nation-wide.

That always made me sad when I was little.

I'm 99% sure my name has never been near the list.
  • Same here Denise...techinically my name doesn't even really exist anywhere but me.

My name is Mareika, which my parents changed from Marijke (the Dutch spelling), which is really just a diminutive form of Mary in Dutch.  I also have no middle name and my maiden name is long and Polish and just as unique as Mareika.

As much as I hated never having items from places with my name on it growing up I am happy about my name now. I am very much 'me'. The only frustration is with how it is both easily mispronounced and easily misspelled (since the grammatical rule is i before e).

I think our kids will likely end up with names that are not common but also not hard to spell.
  • Stephanie was #7 in 1990. Not surprising, at one point I had 3 other Stephanies in my class, and my town only had 16 000 people.
  • Hmm...Mine was #2 for that year. DH's was #12 for his year (he's old)

But my son's name is not on the list for his year either. And Shaye same with my son's name, it's never spelled the way I spelled it.

  • I looked up my name for the last 40 years, and it peaked the year I was born...coming in at #469th most popular. No wonder I can never find pencils or stationary with my name on it. DAMN YOU MOM AND DAD

This.  My official name is just a shortened form of a 'real' name.  I've always hated that.

  • My name has never been on the list as far back as it goes, which doesn't surprise me. Though now it is more well known because of a certain water filter company that uses it.

My name was #1 for girls for a really long time.  Then it started slipping slowly down the list, falling out of the top 5 in the 70s, and in the 2000s has really lost popularity.  It fell out of the top 100 in 2009 for the first time ever.

ETA: and like Card, my name is Biblical.
  • Also, my parents like to lie to me about the origins of my name.  It's Sarah, and in 1986 the number one song in March was "Sara" by FREAKING STARSHIP.

    Family name my @ss.

  • Not knowing what these "different" names are that you are all talking about makes it less interesting.

  • My name was #12 for my year. But, I spell it differently. So even though it's a popular name, I never find anything monogrammed with my spelling.

Jessica was #1 for my year.

    Your name is Brita?
  • The good news is that the girl name we have picked out for a future possible daughter has not been on the list since the 1940's. Yes!

One of my co-workers is a Brit.  But she doesn't have the 'a'.  She says people are always assuming she's a Brittany, but she's not.  Do you get that kind of thing?

Do you say "like the pitcher" when you're telling people your name on the phone and whatnot?  My maiden name is a mandatory household thing, everyone has at least two in their house.  I'd always say "like the thing in your kitchen" when telling someone for a form or whatnot.
  • No keychains or mugs for me. But I have my water filter with my name on it, which fills mugs, ;)
