To be honest, I don't think I've ever really calculated it. I don't really have a food budget, and just buy what I need/want. Some junk/unhealthy food, some healthy. I try to only plan healthy meals anyway so the junk is mostly snacks. I have noticed though that Whole Foods is way more expensive than other grocery stores. I can't shop there. We try to get stuff from farmer's markets, and we grow a lot of our own salad stuff, which definitely helps on cost because H loves salad.

Lol I seriously wanted to try some but I'm not going to pay 7 fucking dollars for a little can of steel cut oats.  I'd rather eat instant.  And that tastes like ass boogers.

Not the peach kind! That's good stuff. Even if a packet is only like 3 bites.

The instant stuff could be Heaven flavored and I still couldn't eat it - it's the runny consistency!  BLECH

Pirate, you're right- of course we could can/jar stuff. But that's not fresh produce, which was my point. I'm guessing 100 years ago people ate a lot of potatoes.

That shiit is misleading. Cooked, the steal cut oats probably yield at least twice as much (volume wise.) They're also about 354x healthier ;)

Oh this is interesting info, thanks.  Hmm.  Now I might be more swayed to try it, lol.

But still.  7 damn dollars.  I rarely buy food that expensive.

Just coming back to say I wasn't thinking about the frozen pizzas - I was thinking take-out pizza.  I've noticed the little ones being cheap, but I guess I just don't check that often - we usually do take-n-bake if we do grocery store pizza.

What are steel cut oats?  I've never heard of them.

They just opened a farmer's market on campus at work here, which is awesome.  But it does require more thought and planning (for someone who doesn't just look at food and imagine a meal) than, say, making tacos.

Hmm, I'll have to go look again. I went when they first opened and couldn't believe some of the cereal and produce prices, and haven't been back since. H goes through a lot of vegetable oil though.

Steel cut oats are the really 'raw' version. Way more fiber and protein than the instant oats. I like the texture a lot more too, fwiw.

AATB, a $6-$7 bag of steel cut oats last me FOREVER.  I usually make up about 4-5 servings at once, then just divide them up into smaller containers and pop them in the fridge. All I have to do is reheat, and it's as easy as the instant stuff.

These are the ones I really like.

(A lot of stuff from that brand is GF, which is why I originally tried them.)

</div><div>Well veg oil is probably cheaper other places, but I use a lot of evoo and it's only $6 for a large bottle of the generic. At Safeway or Giant the same bottle would be $15-20, so it's a big difference. I will go to WF just for that if I need to. </div><div>
</div><div>Although if I lived in Florida I would probably just go to Publix all the time because I love it.
Just earlier today I was looking into  <a href="http://www.doortodoororganics.com/" rel="nofollow">http://www.doortodoororganics.com/</a>  on the recommendation of a friend and was amazed at how small the quantities of food they send you are for the prices. I think it can be more expensive to eat healthy, but I also think it can be equal or even cheaper<strong> if you pay attention to what you need, tailor your menus around sales, and put in some extra effort.</strong>
    Posted by djhar
Thats key, paying attention. Before I got into a groove with our food, we wasted SO much produce. I would be blinded by the big baskets of nectarines, eat 3 and then the rest would go bad and I would get so pissed off. I know how much I can and will eat now and its easier to buy based on that.
I think one of teh best ways to offset the cost of eating healthy is to garden but I think most people don't want to invest the energy.  We started planning our vegetable garden last night after I spent a fortune on produce just for salads this week for lunch.
Yeah, I started focusing on local last fall and I did start having to go back to the grocery store by Christmas. I also ate a lot of of root vegetables and greens because that's what was available. I'm hoping that this summer I can freeze a bunch of stuff for next winter.
