Dress arrived but needs alterations

My dress arrived right on time, but it was disappointing.

I know most dresses need some alterations, but I had a muslin made before ordering so that the dress itself was made exactly to my body's dimensions. And when I tried it on, it seemed like it was made for a much bigger person- definitely more than a size. And it's supposed to be close-fitting and a slim a-line. It feels like they didn't even use the muslin to make it, just made it in a big size. And no, I haven't lost weight since I ordered it and had the muslin fitting, even though the consultants kept trying to claim that was why it was big.

I bet they're going to try to charge a lot for alterations, but what should I do? I have my first fitting on Thursday. Will they be able to fix it? I know that dresses can be taken in normally, but this has a lot of detail and the proportions are wrong. What do you ladies think? I don't know if you can tell that I'm quite a bit smaller underneath the dress, so it may be hard to give an opinion. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post!

Here's what it should fit like:

And here are some pictures of me in it after it arrived:

Re: Dress arrived but needs alterations

  • They will be able to do something to the dress. My dress came in 5 inches too big with lots of flower detail.  We are finding cheaper ways for her to take the dress in without having to take all the beading and lace off. She is taking some and that does make alterations more expensive than someone who does not have those detials. Just talk with them about your concerns.  They do this all the time and will do whatever needs to be done for you to look beautiful on your day.
  • I would definately be upset, Muslins aren't cheap, and the whole purpose is to avoid alterations.  I would request to see the measurements taken when your muslin was made, and get measured now.  If in fact your measurements are the same, then you shouldn't have to pay for alterations.  I would insist on it.  If they refuse I would take it somewhere else for the alterations.  I have heard stories of salons purposely ordering the wrong size so they can charge for alterations, so if you have exhausted all options, take it somewhere else so atleast they aren't getting the $ for the alterations.
  • Beautiful dress! Even now when it's too big you look so good in it.

If you paid more to have them make it to your dimensions, then I would make an issue with the alterations. That, or I would put on the muslin in front of them to show them how it fits, and it hasn't changed and try to use that as a negotiating point for alterations.

I'm not a seamstress, but I know even with complicated styles they can take it in a couple sizes, it's just the cost factor of moving al the detail. Like I said, I would just do everything I can to negotiate the price.

I had a similar experience where my measurments fit a size almost exactly so they ordered that, and when I got it I'll probably need at least 3 fittings to get it right. GL!!
  • See if they can deduct the price of the muslin dress from your alterations fee.  If they won't do that, take your business somewhere else.

That is a gorgeous dress!  I love it!

Thanks ladies for the suggestions so far! And I'm shocked by the compliments- when I looked in the mirror I was swimming in it and had a really hard time seeing anything other than a big ivory blob! Thanks again :)
  • I am getting scared about this. I hear this a lot. Do you ever wonder if they just order it bigger just so you'll pay them for excessive alterations?? Creeps me out.

Either way, I'm sure they can fix it. I hope it all works out for you!
