  I didn't hire a videographer. DH's uncle works at a university doing film archiving and restoration, and he videotaped it for us.

  I didn't have a videographer. I have never had to tell someone, "No, I don't have a tape of my wedding for you to watch. Sorry."

  We bought a video camera because we wanted one for the honeymoon anyway (kinky!) and then had my BM's husband videotape certain parts for us.
  It has been 5 years, and I have yet to watch it.

  i'm glad we didn't get a guest's drunken tirade at our site coordinator on tape.  it was bad enough to witness in person.

  I think that if you want video of your ceremony, you should go with a professional.  Ours set up a stationary camera in front of the church that was run by remote (zoom, pan, etc) by the videographer from the balcony. He had a second camera in the balcony.  He also put a mic on my DH so the audio is heard on the dvd.   I wasn't very impressed with the reception portion of our dvd.  I think we could have cut way back on the time we booked and had a friend cover the highlights at the reception.

  We paid the thousand bucks, and have found it to be well worth it.  I was skeptical, but damned if we don't watch that thing over and over.  And it's so much better than that shaky cam B movie that FIL shot.  I see that, and I expect Bruce Campbell to come through with a chainsaw at any moment.

  We gave a friend a camcorder.  Considering the number of times we've watched the video - zero - it's worth exactly as much as we paid.

  I've actually watched mine several times and other family members have as well.  I was glad we got it b/c there were so many things that I missed that day.  For example, my nephew was the ring bearer and sat in the priest's chair during the ceremony.  It was funny but I had no idea this happened until I saw the video.  Also my husband's aunt was a guest and gave a little interview.  She passed away a few years ago and we played the video for his cousin (her son).  He asked to watch it b/c he wanted to "see" his mom and hear her voice.  He did not have any other video recordings of her.  I think it was well worth the cost.

  I paid my brother's friend something like $200 to use his professional camera and edit a video for us.  I did watch it.  I plan to watch it more when I'm old.
