Let's talk about car accidents

I just almost got into one because of this a-hole who pulled out in front of me to turn right as I was driving down the road.  I have never slammed my breaks harder in my life. I missed him by inches. Then, of course, he flips me off. Jackass. I'm still shaking, it was really freaky. I've never been in a car accident. i was in a moped accident once, but that was a one vehicle thing because it was raining.

Does anyone have any accident stories to share?

Re: Let's talk about car accidents

  • I've been in 14 car accidents.  Two were my fault.  I just have obscenely bad luck.  I've only been injured in three of them.

  • Oh wow Bay! I'm glad you weren't hurt in most of them. I'm surprised I haven't been in more. I'm a terrible driver.
  • Holy sh!t, Bay.  Remind me never to get in a car with you.

  • The very first time I took the car out after getting my license I hit a tree.  It was totally my fault - I spilled soda and leaned down to pick it up like an idiot.  Fortunately I just dented the license plate and the place with the tree (McDonalds) just wanted the bawling girl to go away so they didn't even ask my name.

Wow Baystateapple - that is insanely bad luck.
  • The best story (though it sucked at the time) was the old guy who hit me because he was trying to go IN REVERSE on the highway because he missed his exit.  He only hit me going about 10 mph, because I had stopped dead going "WTF is he doing?!  IS HE BACKING UP?  WHAT?" and trying desperately to shift into the left lane, unfortunately there was too much traffic.

He was furious, yelling at me, yelling at the cops who showed up, telling them that it was my fault because "SHE JUST SAT THERE WHILE I WAS TRYING TO  BACK UP!"  In hindsight, it's freakin' hilarious because the cops were just staring at him with their mouths open while he ranted and raved.  Needless to say, he got the ticket and was at fault.

  • I've been in two, only 1 while driving.  Thankfully no serious injuries in either - just some stitches in my knee from where it went through the dash in the one when I was driving.  I still remember looking down before the blood started flowing and thinking "Oh sh!t, that's gonna hurt".

  • I've never been in a car accident (knock on wood). I've witnessed a few, had a couple close calls, and you would think that living in Miami would up my chances of getting into one, but thankfully I've been lucky so far.

  • I was in one and very close to one a few months ago.

One: My anti-lock brakes failed to brake in the snow so I hit the side of another car.  I was going about five miles an hour.  Of course it hit the driver's side door of the other car, the driver was a pregnant woman, and my dumbass friend who I wanted to hook up with was drinking a beer in my car.  I hadn't had ONE DROP.  My friends jumped out and discarded the beer while I watched the pregnant woman CLIMB from one side of the car to the other, get in position and begin to cry wolf.  I was terrified.  Happily, all is well and I never EVER made such a stupid decision again.

Close: This intersection has one zillion parked cars at it.  I stopped at the stop sign, didn't see any cars coming and pulled out.  Another car WHIPPED around the corner going 40 mph (in a 25, residential area) and came within inches of slamming into me.  Inches from where my sweet baby niece was sleeping in the back of the car.

My fault but um... it's hard to be psychic.  Jackass.
  • My first car accident was when I was about 2 years old, my dad was helping a woman who was locked out of her car and so he left the car running with me in it (strapped in my car seat) to keep me warm. He was only about 20 feet away from the car, and he looked over to see that I had unbuckled my car seat, climbed out and into the driver's seat, and pulled the gear into reverse. He ran to the car to intervene, but not before the car had hooked on the the back of someone's bumper and peeled it almost completely off. I don't think I was left in the car for even a second after that.

  • I got rear ended by a cop, at a red light. It didn't do any damage to my truck, but his front bumper fell off. Because he was a cop, he had to have an accident report, but wasn't allowed to do it himself. He had to radio for another cop to come and make the report. It was hysterical, he was so embarrassed. The cop who showed up to take the report gave him such a hard time, too. He picked up his bumper and put it in the back seat and the other copy said "Don't arrest him, it wasn't his fault, the least you could do is let him ride in the front so he's not shamed by the other bumpers on the road."

They had all my information from the report, so about a week later, I got a $25 giftcard to Krispy Kreme and a thank you note for being so nice. lol

What an idiot! I don't get how that could even REMOTELY be your fault. He was backing up. ON THE HIGHWAY.
  • My worst was in '05, when I was 21.  My mom was driving and she turned left across oncoming traffic into a gas station.  She didn't see an SUV coming because there was a car leaving the gas station at the same time and it cut off her line of vision.  The SUV ended up T-boning my mom's Volvo on the passenger side (my side), and the car spun around and hit two other cars.

The car was totaled, my mom was okay except for a slipped disc in her neck, and I had a broken pelvis, three cracked ribs, a broken tailbone, a collapsed lung, and facial lacerations from my face going through the window.  That was a fun time.

  • Jimmney Christmas Bay that is really scary.

Only 1- I was run off  of a tiny dirt road in Pony, Montana and the car went into the ditch and rolled 1 1/2 times. That was my first year in college. I thought my parents were going to kill me once they found out I was ok.

My dad cried b/c I totaled his favorite truck...

  • I got into an accident when I was first driving.  I was maybe 17, and was at a friend's house.  I got to the end of her street, and was making a left turn, and there was a hedge on the left side of the street so not great visibility.  I looked left, then right, then went - in the meantime a car had come around the corner from my left side, and he basically t-boned me.  It was my fault, obviously, because I shouldn't have pulled out.  He may have been going a little fast, but really I was to blame.

It was one of the scariest moments of my life, fortunately everyone was ok but I remember sitting on the side of the road shaking and crying while I waited for the cops to come.  I will say it made me a more cautious driver in general.

I also got hit from behind because the car behind me thought red meant go once, but again fortunately no one was hurt.  I could see them not slowing down as they came up behind me, and felt super helpless knowing what was coming.

I've been in three that did enough damage to my car to send it to the body shop.

#1--My first car, a 2001 Ford Escort.  My mom and dad had just given me the keys two weeks earlier.  I was turning left into the local grocery store parking lot, and at the time no one was coming.  Next thing you know, this lady in an SUV slams into my passenger side door.  No one was hurt, but I got the ticket for failing to yield.  The worst part about that one was that my mom had to come and pick me up, and she was not very happy about it...I was kind of scared of my mom at 19 years old.

#2--It was 4 months after I got my 2006 Pontiac Vibe...my current car.  I was driving to Dairy Queen to get something to eat before work.  A car stops in front of me and there is no turn signal and they are in the far left part of the lane, so I'm assuming they are turning left.  I go around them on the right, and lo and behold they turn right.  I veer off into the grass and end up on a side street.  They did enough damage to where I had to climb out of the passenger side and they effed up my axle.  I wasn't hurt, but I was upset.  The other driver got the ticket though because they didn't have insurance.  And my car didn't get totalled because it was still fairly new.

#3--In my Vibe.  i was at a stop sign, it had been raining the last few days.  My FI (BF at the time) and my dog and my brother's dog were in the car.  I had just gotten done picking the dogs up from boarding after being gone and we were on our way home.  Literally, the last stop sign before I got to my duplex, we get rear ended.

I've been in a lot of close calls, but that's because I can be a careless driver.

ETA:  I don't pay attention like I should, especially on long drives.  I get too comfortable behind the wheel.

Move to the city.  No need for a car every day!
  • I've only been in 1 at fault accident the first winter I was driving on my own. I was going shopping with a friend of mine on the 15th of December and we'd had the first major snow storm during the night so the roads were really slushy. He hit his breaks for a yellow light he should have gone through, and having virtually no winter driving experience myself at 17 I slammed on my breaks and slid right into the back of him. Luckly we weren't going very fast to begin with and no one was injured.

In February of 2010, I was driving to my riding lesson out in the country and saw deer up ahead on the road. Having just clipped one 6 months before in the exact same spot on my way back from riding I was a bit freaked out and this little voice in my head said "deer travel in packs, look for more." Sure enough, two more started to come out of the woods so I put on my signal and started to move onto the shoulder of the road to wait for them to pass. Well bitch behind me (who was texting) was driving 100 km, didn't see my signal or breaks and slammed right into me. I lost control of my car, crossed the center line and went flying off into the ditch. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance and kept overnight for observation. Ended up in physio three times a week for about 5 months and still have to go every now and then for "tune ups." My back muscles that were hurt in the accident get sore and tired very easily and my neck cracks in a place that it never used to. Haven't been on that road since, clearly it's bad luck for me.

  • I got into 3 car accidents in the span of 3 months. I felt so damn unlucky. I was the driver in all of them, but miraculously never was at fault. In one of them, the driver of the other car was a 19 year old idiot teenager who ADMITTED to me and J that she was racing her BF (driving another car) so she didn't see that she was coming up behind me. Yeah, she got all the fault on that one.

  • There was an accident I was in when I was 16 that was a 5 car pile up. My friend's stepdad was driving at the time. 2 years later, my friend told me the people in the truck we rear ended (who also rear ended the people in front of them) were trying to now sue her family for medical expenses because all of a sudden the wife's back injuries made it so they couldn't have sex. Um, seriously? They were in a huge ass F150 and we hit the bed of their truck in a tiny 2 door Saturn. I highly doubt their back injuries TWO YEARS later were from that. The husband probably just wanted to find an excuse to get monetary compensation for his lack of sex from his wife.

Yeah, if that car (whose bumper I peeled off) hadn't have been in the way I would have backed right onto a busy road. My dad was pretty shocked because I had never even unbuckled myself before, let alone climbed into the driver's seat. The guy whose car it was was apparently this big mean looking dude and my dad felt pretty silly saying, 'Hey, it was my 2 year old daughter that did that to your car!'

My insurance company refused to settle after my big accident until over a YEAR after the date, mainly because they needed to assess how much damage was done, I had to have surgery on my face to remove the glass and fix the lacerations, etc.  I had to go to routine dr.'s visits for a year before they would "rate" my body (scale of 1 - 5, one being crippled for life, 5 being 100% healed -- I rated a 3), and then proceed from there to decide how the settlement would be worked out.

Two years is a BIT much to claim.

Oh yeah, I know it takes a long time to get all that figured out, but it was literally the first time they had even brought it up. When we all got out of the car, the two of them ran over to us asking if WE were all ok and they said that they were just fine. I dunno, it was just a little sketchy so far after the accident!

I think it was an old enough car that you didn't need to push the brake to shift, I definitely wouldn't have been able to do that.
  • I've been in 2, maybe 3 car accidents. The first was when I was maybe 7. We were headed home from a vacation and the speed limit was 65. My dad was driving. A guy came up behind us going 80 and actually put the front end of his car onto the back of my parent's van. The car was totalled and it led to a lot of back troubles for my parents. I think I was too little to be really scared, but the car was a mess.

The second was right after I got my license. I fell asleep driving home really late one night and slid my car (roof down) over the highway into a wheat field. I hit a mile marker. My air bag didn't go off so I hit my head pretty hard. Thankfully, I just had a concussion. I got a ticket for that one.

A few months ago I was pulling out of a parking garage and my light was green. I was yielding to some pedestrians crossing where I wanted to turn left and I had finally gotten my chance to turn. A bicyclist was coming straight for my door. I stopped just in time but he hit me (his crosswalk sign was red) and dented up my hood and door. He actually flew across my windshield. I am lucky (sometimes!) to be a cop's daughter because I was feeling really terrible about the situation and my dad showed me the footage from the traffic camera. He was clearly at fault and he actually rode away after it happened, so if he were to report anything it was filed as a hit and run on him.
  • KNOCK ON WOOD, I havent caused any accidents, but I was in the care with FSIL when she drove right into the car in front of us.  We were in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Mass Pike, and she wasnt paying attention.  I shouted at her as she hit the gas and she slammed on the brake, but not quickly enough to drive into the car in front of us.  There was more damage to her car than his (she had a tiny little thing and he had a big Volvo station wagon).  It just happened that a State Cop was 2 cars behind us, so while FSIL was having a major breakdown, I spoke with the driver, spoke with the cops and notified FMIL.  And then I drove the rest of the way.

Three years later I totally have PTSD from it and get really nervous when I am in the passenger seat of a car in heavy traffic.  I ALWAYS offer to drive.
