Help w/ White Elephant gift ideas!!

Work holiday party is Thursday - a daytime event at my boss's house. I always thought these gift exchanges were new items within a certain dollar limit, but I guess not this year...  I'm suppose to "re-gift" an item from home I don't want? And wrap it up? Sigh. I haven't been to any holiday parties yet this year to accumulate stuff I don't want, and I don't really keep new gifts laying around the house. We can buy something if we want, but I don't want to spend money on a nice gift just to get someone else's decorative fondue set. So- I'm headed to Marshall's today or tomorrow for something cheap. Thoughts?

    I don't understand the concept of giving a pointless gift, really.  Obviously with this swap, you are getting rid of something you don't want, and I'm sure it's supposed to be funny, but I think it sucks that you have to go out and get something "lame" to give to someone.  I would just use the dollar amount given and get something cool, and try to end the cycle.

    ETA: i2i Liatris.  Except I love candles ;)
  • I just don't participate in them.  I don't want someone else's junk.  I guess I don't really get the fun of that kind of gift exchange.
  • holiday salt and pepper shakers? I think those are fun.

    Do not mess in the affairs of dinosaurs because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
    I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew

    I really hate these things too..... But unfortuanately FI family started doing this last year.  Anyways I searched and searched and I actually made these Maxi Pad Slippers CLICK. I had to go and by pads of course but I just glued them up with my hot glue gun put a nice little bow on each of them and then wrote a note with them that said something like :

    * Soft and Hygienic
    * Non-slip grip strips on the soles
    * Built in deodorant feature keeps feet smelling fresh
    * Disposable and biodegradable
    * Environmentally safe
    * No more bending over to mop up spills

    It was actually the best gift of the bunch - we all laughed so hard when FFIL opened the gift he got so red in the face ....  But now i'm stuck for what i'm going to do this year ---- I HATE THIS STUPID STUPID gift exchange!

  • $10 gift card?  To starbucks?  or is that too much $$$ even.. i like the S&P shakers... and i do like scented candles, so that could be a good idea
  • oops, i totally misread your original post about you're supposed to "re-gift" something, sorry!  PPs had good ideas
  • I would literally just go through a closet/drawer/cabinet/whatever and find something random that you don't really need. I mean you don't have a cheeseball figurine or random hackey sack to give away? That's what Pink (White/whatever) Elephants are all about - the laughing at the random crap.
  • Last year for my work one I just wrapped up two DVDs I hadn't watched in like a decade. Do you have anything like that?

  • We're doing this too. FI and I bought like a 1000 piece puzzle a while ago and tried to put it together and it was such a PITA. So I'm wrapping it up and taking it to my work's Christmas party tomorrow.
  • For our work swap, we buy something under $10 or regift.  I got a chocolate lava cake set at Marshall's for less than $10 (comes with ramekins, chocolate mix, and chocolate pieces).  Marshall's near me has a bunch of cute kitchen/holiday things right now, I'm sure you can find something at your store.

    I thought about getting a bunny suicides book, but DH thought that would be too weird, and I'm relatively new in my office.
  • A bottle of wine?
  • I have to attend one of these on Christmas Eve.  Thanks for the ideas!
  • Lottery tickets!!
