Transporting all of your stuff?

I've started a tote in my office to put wedding necessities in that will need to make it to Maui and it seems to be growing and growing...
How did all you past brides or to be's get your stuff to the island without breaking the bank?

I'm already bringing a box with glass vases, my dress and a small overhead suitcase with me as carry on. I'm actually not even sure how I'll manage that...but I'm going to try!

Re: Transporting all of your stuff?

  • Haha, yeah, we have the same problem...made our own menus, got a deal on some party favors, party gifts, the list goes on.

  • Do you have a wedding coordinator? Mine accepts 3 small boxes. But really, how small? And once it gets there, can she really turn it away?! lol. Anyway, ask your WC or hotel if you can send anything in advance and hold it for you. Personally, I have family on the island, so I'll be sending stuff over to them... HTH!

  • We shipped all of our favors, etc. to our wedding coordinator and also ordered some things on line and shipped direct to her as well.
  • I put my dress in a vacuum seal bag and got it really small. It went in my carry on with the rest of the wedding necessities. Everything else was checked (vacation clothes, etc.) Vanessa Thompson on Maui in Kihei is the one who steamed the dress and got it looking fabulous!
  • We are bringing our stuff on the plane.  It's cheaper to pay to pack a big bag then it is to ship it.
  • I bought 2 big Rubbermaid tubs for all of our items and checked them with our baggage.  I figured it was only $25/bag and due to the size and weight it would have cost way more to mail it ahead of time.  Plus, I felt good knowing all of my stuff was with me on the plane and I didn't have to worry about it arriving alright.  Highly recommend this, it was seamless!

  • Yep, we put everything in a giant cardboard box and checked it as baggage.  Welcome totes, menus, programs, chair ties, boxes of bubble wands, and really anything that wasn't wedding party attire or jewelry.   The box wasn't even that big or heavy, and we only needed 1.  DH and I shared a separate suitcase of non-wedding clothes which we also checked.

We carried on the dresses (mine, MOH, mom) and suits (DH, dad) and shoes / jewelry.

  • Thanks a million ladies! I'm leaning towards checking things and I just heard that a few more people are grabbing our same flight so I'm going to push some things into their carryon if they have room. lol :)

Things that I felt I could either make do without or were not one of a kind were shipped via USPS to my wedding coordinator in advance (be sure to do this at least a month, preferably two months, before the wedding date because the cheapest shipping rate is slow!).  This included our vases, supplies for floral arrangements and bouquets, welcome bag items, wedding party gifts (embroidered towels), portable speakers (not kidding - for our afterparty! :) ), stuff like that.  I didn't want to mess with it at the airport or at the last minute.

Things that I considered irreplaceable like my dress, jewelry, shoes, makeup, and DH's suit came with us in our luggage.

We actually shipped (the slow/cheap way!) all of our wedding stuff and extra clothes/stuff we didn't need for the HM back home via USPS, including my dress.  We didn't want to lug it all around on our HM with us or burden any of our guests with it.  Everything arrived home safe and sound about three weeks after we got home.
  • Also, consider if any of your guests who will be leaving the same location you are (aka, home) are considered MVP Miles Members for the airline you are flying.  My husband's parents were able to take our Rubbermaid tubs back home with them for free because they have MVP status on Alaska Airlines (unlimited baggage) - so we didn't have to worry about getting them back to our home.  That said, it was not a problem to bring them with us.  After the wedding I consolidated to only 1 tub to send home and it was fine.  No more burdensome than any other piece of luggage.
