Photography Help!!!

My fiance and I just got our engagement photos back and are a little bit disappointed in the way they turned out! We really loved the photographers previous work and his pricing was in our price range. So when we got the photos back and they were not what  we were expecting. I want to email our photographer and tell him how dissatisfied I am with him but I do not want to sound bitchy or rude for the fear that our wedding photos being ruined and the relationship with our photographer being ruined. We can not afford to hire a new photographer. Does anyone has any suggestions how I can approach this with our photographer? Thanks

What are you dissapointed with?  Can you pin-point it?  Are the photos too serious, color is off, composition poor, too artsy, etc?

I think if you can narrow it down to a piece of criticism that you can make constructive, it wouldn't be too hard to send a professional email citing what you would like to see changed in your wedding photos.

For his previous work, did you look at entire shoots or just his highlighted work on the web / blog / albums?

Photographers will only publish their best work for you to see.  For a wedding they can shoot thousand's of photos but only get a handful of really good shots and that's what they will show you unless you ask to see more - and THEN you get the idea if they get "those" shots most of the time or only some of the time.

The PP brought up some good questions to ask ... is it the composition, the color, the style, etc. that you are not happy with?

Some of those thigs can be changed in post processing, while others like the style are harder to correct.

So assuming it's the latter (the style) that you are not happy with: if you are looking for more photo-journalism type shots rather than posed ... you can e-mail him and say: "while we appreciate these photos for our engagment pictures, we are hoping that you might encorporate more detail shots, candid shots, and documentry types shots into our wedding photos."

This lets him know that you are okay with the typical posed shots for family and portrait photos, you really are looking for a variety of shots from the day.  Don't hesitate to have some examples and a list of what you are looking for, sometimes a little direction is helpful to let your photographer know what you are looking for.

I don't know where you are having your wedding, but my wedding will be taking place in Madison and we found a great photographer with great rates.  She included our engagement photo session as well in the package.
