When to get wedding dress?

My wedding is November of this year.  Not sure when to get a wedding dress. I don't want to buy one right now because first I am scared I will find something else I might like later and I want to lose about 5 -10 more lbs before getting fitted.  But I also don't want to wait to long because of the time it takes to do alterations. Any suggestions?  Thank you!

Re: When to get wedding dress?

  • It really depends on where you're getting your dress.  David's Bridal only takes about 4-6 weeks to come in, sometimes even sooner, but other desigers like Maggie Sotterro can take 6 months.  I wouldn't wait any closer than 6 months to your wedding.  Five to ten pounds of weight isn't really going to make much difference at all as far as trying on dresses.  You wait to get alterations until much closer to the wedding anyway.

  • Call the most reputable bridal salon in your city and ask them what the average delivery time is for some of the designers you like. I ordered my wedding dress 1a year before my wedding, and the stupid thing took 10 months to arrive from Spain because there was some weird lace shortage. The bridal salon advised me that it would be roughly 8 months in their experience, so I had a ballpark idea and (thankfully) ordered early just in case.

As for finding something else afterwards - just relax when selecting a dress and don't buy it just because you feel you need something. The right dress will come up, and once you buy it, move onto something else and stop looking. There are a lot of two-dress brides, and it's just not something you want to saddle yourself with.
  • I would start trying them on ASAP, that way you start getting an idea of what looks good on you and what you like.  If you find something you like, you don't have to order it right away; find out from the salon how long it will take to come in, then order it a couple of months before that date.  If you find something earlier than you need to order, you can always sit on it and think it over until you're sure.

And once you find the right dress, stop looking.  There are thousands of wedding dresses out there, you'll just confuse yourself if you keep shopping once you've placed an order.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

The secret to this part of your question is to STOP looking once you've found your dress.  You can second guess yourself like crazy if you don't.

For that matter, the same advice works once your book your venue, your flowers, buy your shoes, pick out the BM dresses, decide on a hair style, etc.

Once you've had that strong visceral reaction that lets you know this is IT, check it off on your to-do list, and then stop looking.  You'll be much happier.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • Listen to Trix. You HAVE to stop looking when you find your dress.

I would reccomend shopping soon. I ordered a dress (Casablanca) July 5th and I'm still waiting for it!

  • I ordered my dress 6 months before my wedding at Eva's Bridal. The consultant told me it would take at most 4 months to get there and then we had to do alterations too, but it all depends on the place.
  • Some places recommend you order your dress 8-12 months before your wedding to assure it'll come in time and that you'll have time for alterations. It's up to you, but I would order earlier and have alterations done, if need be later on. (Besides everyone says they're going to shed weight before their wedding and we never get to it amidst the chaos.)
  • My wedding is October 9.  I ordered my dress a year in advance and it is going to take 6 months to get in.  Then you have to factor in that depending on the details of the dress that the alteration might take about a month. Factor in Bridal Portraits and it starts adding up.  I would order it by the end of March.  It will give you time to lose 5-10lbs and you will still get it in time.  Also, once you've found the dress you love it hits you that there isn't another dress that you would want.  The dress is like a guy.  Once you found the right one-stop looking.  Good luck shopping-you'll have so much fun!

  • if your dress has a corset back loosing 5-10 lbs should not matter much...you just pull it tighter.  I really wish my dress had that!!!
  • I'm shopping now for my August 28 wedding..and was told I need to order in next couple of weeks to be safe...
  • The standard that I've found/heard is to order your dress 9-12 months beforehand to allow ample time for the order to come and for alterations.
  • I got mine a year in advance from DB.  Mine size was in stock so I took it home that day.  I did second guess myself a little but put it right out of my mind, otherwise I would have went crazy.  Had my first fitting last weekend, and completely fell in love with it again when I put it on.  I also recommend a corrset back, mine has one and the dress is just more forgiving also because you can pull it tight it gives me a great waistline shape.
  • My wedding is in Oct this year and I haven't started shopping yet. I know Alfred Angelo's fall line isn't coming out until FEB, so I'm waiting until then to start.
