This is a gyn to gyn thing -- some like to press their political opinions on their patients and deny inserting any sort of IUD unless they've had a child. One of my close friends had to go to five gynecologists in her home state of Mississippi to finally get one willing to insert an IUD because she has not (and will not) had a child. She almost gave up and either came here or went out to visit friends in Albuquerque because she was tired of getting the runaround.

And my cycle is crazy regular. It's a long one -- 35 days -- but it's regular. I'm lucky.

• I hate the "you can't have an IUD until you've had a baby" thing. My gyno didn't even QUESTION it when I told her I wanted one. I feel like it's the "are you sure you don't want to have kids" stigma... the only thing that makes it easier if you've had kids is that your cervix has already been dialated so it makes insertion hurt less.

Mirena was the best decision I've ever made for birth control.

Well I started it when I was 17 and I got skinny for the first few months, but IDK if it was from BC, the fact that I was in a senior in HS, more sexually active (sexercizing more!), I was dancing for a combo of 6 hours 2 days a week, working at a grocery store 4 days a week, at LEAST 5 hours for each of those days, I was stressed, or eating healthfully, as ALL of that was happening at once.
Then about 6 months in, I let my diet slip and gained about 8 lbs.
Then the summer after HS graduation I gained another 10 because I didn't have to fit into my prom dress any more and thus could eat whatever the heck I wanted.
Then I gained another 30 in college because of a terrible diet (mashed potatoes & butter sandwiches for dinner x 7 days a week) and a lower activity level.
I haven't budged the scale even though I'm back on a better diet (still tough to eat well in my house!!!) and exercising regularly.

Back in the early-mid 80's my mom gained a ton of weight with BCP so idk if it's the same with me.

Ugh, I hate that too. A while ago Slate.com had a series of short articles (that's not the right word, but I don't know what is) by women who had decided not to have children. Some of the women were older, but a lot of them were in their twenties. Those women had so many instances of doctors basically telling them "Well, you'll change your mind [when your older, when you meet the right guy, etc.]". And it really disgusted me. I can understand them requiring some sort of counseling for women that want to undergo a permanent or surgical solution, but they shouldn't try to actively dissuade someone due to their age. Just like I'm SURE I want to have children someday, I know there are many women who are equally sure they don't want to. And, it't not like if you get your tubes tied you can never be a mother if you happen to change your mind, there is adoption, fostering, surrogacy, etc.

Funny story. My cousin had a set of twins at 23. She told her ob/gyn that she wanted her tubes tied asap he goes "you'll change your mind". She got pg again had her next son like a year after asked her ob/gyn the same question he told her "you'll change your mind" after her FOURTH kid at 28 they decided to tie her tubes.

I guess four kids is the lucky number, idk lol.

I agree. It is such an incredibly personal decision. I don't ask you why you're SO SURE you want to have kids... why is any anyones business why I DON'T want to have kids? It just bothers me that there's such an incredible stigma on people who are childless by choice. I mean, even just personally - I had to build up a lot of courage to tell my BF that I didn't want kids... because I was afraid he'd be like "your woman is broken. Peace." and that's so not fair.

That's the ONE thing that could actually be a little easier if I was dealing with a baby versus a puppy - I know my mom will be jumping at every opportunity to kidnap any grandchildren. The dog? Not so much, lol.

• I also have Mirena. All other hormonal BC is too strong and makes me crazy. At 27, I wanted an IUD and was told I'd change my mind about kids, even though I have never ever wanted them. At 30, I asked again and got one because my doc now has one. It's so freaking stupid. By the way, I recently read the makers of Mirena are developing a smaller version for women who have not had children. Because their FDA trials had no nulliparous women, they can't market Mirena at them.

I too have the Mirena (no kids. No sex, even. Not sure they believed that part but *shrug*). I went to Planned Parenthood and they didn't even blink when I asked for it at age 20. And thanks to California's FamilyPACT program I got it for free.

I loooove this thing. I'm one of the lucky women who quickly stopped having a period after getting it (happens to something like 20% in the first year, and I think 80% by the fifth), so I haven't had that annoyance for five years! Which is good since that's why I got the thing. I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclin at one point, and Yaz, and both made my usually mild period horrific to where I was missing class. So I said f*ck it, I'm done with this and got the Mirena. Not long after, my sister was inspired by my experience to get one too. If you can withstand the initial insertion (which can be pretty painful) and adjustment period it's totally worth it. In fact I just had it replaced so I can enjoy five more years! And as far as its effectiveness, it has a lower failure rate than sterilization in regard to pregnancy, so for many that's a definite plus.

Mirena isn't "officially" approved for childless women, and until recently the ParaGard wasn't either (recently it's been approved). So technically by doing so doctors are using it "off label," which they have the right to do if they see fit. Doctors in the US tend to be gun-shy about IUDs though, do to one from the 70's called the Dalkon Shield. The person who designed it for some reason made the strings out of nylon or something, rather than the steel used in other countries, which allowed bacteria to be carried up into the uterus. This caused a ton of PID and infertility and scared people away from them, so they didn't want to risk making a woman "barren" if she had no kids. It's a stigma that has yet to fully go away, despite the fact that now all strings are steel.

So yeah. Can't help you with pills, but I can gush over my "little friend." :P

Speaking of PP not so much as blinking at my request for the IUD, they also had no qualms about letting me keep my old IUD after it was removed. I think her eyebrow twitched a bit at the request, but that was it. I love PP, especially the one near me.

image
• I'm in the Microgestin club!

I'm terrified to go off the pill again.
a. I used to get faint sometimes and what the heck would I do if I was at work and I was nearly passing out once a month?
b. I was off of the pill for one month a few years ago because I didn't order a refill in time. And having a regular period is THE WORST THING IN THIS FREAKING WORLD. I won't go into detail but honestly, how do women function. It was a nightmare for me.

[QUOTE]I also have Mirena.

What I find amusing about this is that the ParaGard is a fair amount bigger than the Mirena, yet it's approved for nulliparous women while some still use the excuse that the Mirena "won't fit" as a reason to deny inserting it. Oh, people.

I don't use BC. I used to, shortly after Bean was born, but most made me freaking insane. I tried about 4 or 5 different ones and the only one that worked slightly well for me was Nuvaring.
I have horrid cramps on the first day of my period and I guess I just have to deal with that. I have to take 2 muscle relaxers and about 800mg of Motrin/twice, just to get through the first day. And that just barely takes the edge off.
In the end, hormonal BC just didn't suit me well. I just had to be extra careful not to get knocked up back then. Now we're trying, so I guess it doesn't matter much.

ETA: cause I can't type a clear thought today...
