Re: Unity Volcano (only sort of E related)

• I'm sorry I just don't get it but i'm sure there's other ways to bring science into the ceremony.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Unity Volcano (only sort of E related) : There are ways to incorporate your love for science without building and blowing up a volcano (trust me). Here's the deal, dude. If this is "you" and your guests will think it's cute, you gotta do it big, right? That means big volcano, dry ice to give it that "smoky, about to erupt" look, and food coloring to really make that lava look deadly. Again, all these things you add for effect are going to make for huge mess potential.

Throw some other ideas out there - I'm totally up for new things to do. I just really don't want to do roses or sand or flowers.

I'm surprised by the negativity on the board (well, maybe not really), but very ready for new ideas to throw back at FI.

Dflint, I don't mean to be rude to the Knot but I've noticed that this is not the place for advice on anything even slightly unusual or non traditional. It's great if you want to check invitation wording or see if a color scheme matches, but I've never seen an unusual or quirky idea get the OK from other posters. If you think your friends would get it and appreciate it (and I know mine would) then you should do it whether or not random Internet posters agree.

OK you're an english teacher - think about the symbolism, please. I have an English degree, and volaco = destruction is the first thing I thought of. It's the first thing 90% of your guests will think of also. The point of a unity candle or sand ceremony is that they are the SAME things (flame, sand, etc) that you can't separate once you put together. And while you can't separate baking soda and vinegar after the fact, they're not the same thing being combined, and there's still a secondary deal that happens - it overflows and is destructive to something below it. Honestly, tiny dinosaurs is just as bad - because then it's not just destructive, there's the whole extinction thing you've got going on.

And I think lab coats would be bizarre.

I've been on here for a year and a half, which isn't that long, but this is undoubtedly the weirdest idea I've heard. If you're quirky and relaxed, have a whimsical element at your reception. A chemical reaction, which can ruin other things, is not the point of a unity ceremony.

The paper flower idea is really cool - and funnily eanough, when I googled "science ceremony," that's when I found the unity volcano.

I do really like unity ceremonies, especially since we're not at all religious, but I see your point
• I think a unity volcano is hilarious.

NMS personally, but clearly it's yours. And it's not like it's rude or offensive. (I wouldn't put a tiny village though. That would be potentially offensive. Do dinosaurs instead) So go on with your bad self.

I think you can just get a wheeled table, put it on that and have a friend or two wheel it in and out.

Give me a freakin break. There are so many posters here who have had off-the-wall and non-traditional elements to their wedding, myself included, and others have loved them. Quirky ideas are not automatically shot down. But people will point out potential problems to ideas.

The dinosaurs would be cute instead. Or you can get those little plastic palm trees and make a tiny Jurassic world instead of a village.

Well If you think you are going to be welcomed here after that first comment, you are an idiot.

OP: I do agree that if you must have the volcano, it will go over much better without a village getting destroyed. I would probably have it up there before the ceremony and leave it there until you have exited. I think having someone bring it up mid ceremony could be distracting and potentially disastrous.

I'm on MUN1's bench. I personally find unity ceremonies to be kind of lame, but this is different and interesting at least. And baking soda and vinegar are not going to ruin anything. It's not going to be like the freaking splash zone at a Shamu show. Also, baking soda and vinegar isn't going to stain anything either.

I say go for it. If we are talking about fucked up symbolism in wedding ceremonies I really think a volcano is the least of your problems.

I'm sitting with MUN and Rupe. I think it's kinda hilarious. Not the destroying the village part - but the idea of mixing two things and having something else happen? Ha. I'd laugh.

Two of my good friends (their wedding anniversary is today!) mixed together two clear bottles of liquid that turned blue once mixed as their unity thing. It was pretty cool. Not my style (I'm a scientist, but I wouldn't have done anything like that or had hydrocarbons piped into my cake... woah), but this was subtle and had a nice effect. I'd have to look up what they used but clearly it wasn't complicated.

You could have it covered with a sheet, or peice of fabric if you wanted to keep it hidden.

• I agree with muni as well. I think most unity ceremonies are pointless since the actual ceremony unites you. So doing something different that you're excited about sounds great to me. Go for it! I'm not sure what some of you are envisioning but when you do these little volcanoes it doesn't look like an explosion. It's a small controlled reaction, and I think the symbolism doesn't necessarily go toward "destruction". I mean, it could be more like "when these two come together amazing things happen". That's super cheesy, I know, but I'm just saying this doesn't have to be about destruction.

I think that's probably where some of the antagonism and problems with symbolism were coming from - people were imagining something a lot more looming and destructive than the fizzing climax that is a science fair volcano.

*my original wording definitely didn't help

I would cover it with something. For me, personally, if I saw a volcano (small or large) off to the side or behind the officiant, I'd be wondering why it was there and what was going to happen the entire time. It would distract me (as I'm easily distracted) from the actual ceremony, even if nothing was happening with it at the moment.

I'm not sure there's any way around that. If I saw a mound of something covered by a sheet, I'd spend all of my time guessing what it was.
Luckily, it's going to be a pretty short ceremony. I think I'll end up doing one or both of those ideas.
• Unity volcano? Hilarious.
And volcanoes aren't all about destruction. Where does everyone think Hawaii came from? ;)

I agree with PPs that you should probably take the village out of the equation (dinosaurs?? also hilarious).

Can you keep it inside of a tray of some sorts with deep sides so there's no chance it can leak onto the ground and possible seep onto your guests?

Rolling cart is a good idea.

Any chance this is going to be a super casual kitsch theme wedding? You could decorate the area with palm trees and leis and such and then the volcano would fit right in the decor until it was time to light it.
Just an idea. And probably a bad one, but I had to go there...

[QUOTE]In Response to Re:Unity Volcano only sort of E related: Well you were originally planning to destroy a village in the same way a tsunami does, so yeah, that was a major issue. If it's in your backyard and you take away the "our love creates the destruction of innocent lives" element, then I think it's fine. Though, I do have to disagree with Rup that baking soda and vinegar won't stain anything.

I naturally assumed that since you want your guests to see the reaction from their seats, there would probably be some kind of coloring involved which definitely would stain.
