Just Engaged and Proposals

Long engagement? Come lament here!

My DF proposed a year and 9 months ago. We're getting married in a year and 7 months, which brings it to a total of 3 years and 4 months. Anyone else have an engagement as long as ours? It is driving me crazy!! But this is what seems best for us since we're not done school yet and want to wait until we're graduated. The wait is absolutely killing us. It's even harder when we see people getting engaged after us and married before us. I know I sound unreasonable but is anyone else in this situation? How do you deal with it? Oh and it's a long-distance relationship too! On the bright side, I can safely say we're done over half our wait :)

  • I'm sure the time will pass by quickly- that's at least what everyone's been telling me! I've been with FI about 8 1/2 years. We planned for a two year and two month engagement. We have approximately a year and two months to go. The waits a little tough but it makes sense in the end. I'll be done with grad school and we will have more time to save up money and won't be pressed for time to sign vendors.

  • I know how you feel. Not only are my FI and I in school but we have been engaged since 2008. It would not have been too bad but we could not have our wedding on our original date in May of this year due to health problems. Now we're having to wait until September of next year to tie the knot.

FI keeps telling me the day will be here before we know it and that we're already married. He says I have already made him happier than he could have imagined so he doesn't mind waiting until that day.

Also, FI's two friends and two cousin both were engaged after us and are now married already! It is hard a times but then I remember the day is about the love we have for one another and time cannot change that no matter what!

  • We were engaged for about 15 months. I know it wasn't as long as some of the others, but it still seemed like a long time from the time we got engaged esp when I was looking at the calendar. Time did go by really fast, esp once we got into the planning, plus I moved out of state in that time and we planned a wedding from afar, which made things harder and made the time drag on and on.
  • I got engaged about 3 weeks ago and were planning a wedding in about 18 months. Not too long but still longer than the average engagement. There's alot of budget benefits when you have a long engagement. We will already have our venue paid off by the time I go dress shopping so it's nice not having to shell out a bunch of money all at once.
  • When we get married we will have been engaged for 21 months.  It flies SO fast, I can't believe we're now 10 months out, but I'm very thankful for the time.  I've gotten a lot of DIY done.  :)
  • I guess you can say my FI and I don't rush things.  We started dating Feb. 9 2001 and didn't get engaged till January 2010.  Wedding is schedule for December 2011.  So by the time we get married we will have been together for a total of almost 11 years!

  • I can relate also.  My FI and I started dating in June 2005, got engaged in July of 2010, and will be getting married in July of 2012.  It made the most financial sense.  We didn't want to get engaged until we both had finished our undergrad and masters and had jobs.  Because of my job, I move around alot and we needed the two years to make sure that we would be stable.  Also the date is really important to us.
  • right there with you FI and i have been dating 7 years and will be getting married on sept 2012.
i have no advise to give you becuase i am going crazy too. i want it to be right now lol. i love josh so much and want the world to share in how much he means to me.  its really hard but i am just planing, planing, planing lol.Laughing
  • We are not getting married till Oct 2012. I am in no rush to run off and start planning my pretty pretty princess day. Time passes regardless if I prematurely plan a wedding or we wait. I prefer to just not think about the wedding, Im just relaxing and enjoying my engagement  with my Fiance. Remember time passes no matter what...

  • I"m recently engaged. We are planning to get married in January 2013. This will give us time to finish school this June, move up north, and a year to simply focus all of my energy on wedding planning! I can't wait!
  • I just got engaged this June and we aren't planning to get married until June 2013. I just started graduate school, and I wanted to be finished with my coursework, my comprehensives, and firmly into my dissertation/internship before we got married. I'd love to bump the wedding up a year, but a.) we can't afford it, and b.) I would lose my mind trying to plan a wedding and get through the beginning of school. Right now we're also living separately because my fiance's job requires him to be in a different part of the state than where I need to be for school, so my goal for the next year is to be living in the same house again.

I'm trying not to think too much about how long our engagement is and focus instead on just enjoying being engaged - I waited six years for it, so I wanna enjoy it. :)

  • My FI and I arent getting married until March 2013.  We were actually just talking the other day that after this Christmas, we still have 2 Christmases to go until the wedding and my stepson (who is currently 4) will be 7 1/2!!!....and that made it seem like FOREVER!!!  But I am planning on returning to school and he just finished so he needs to settle into a stable job and we have alot of saving to do.  It does seem like forever but I watched so many of my friends rush through their engagments and they felt like they sacraficed alot of what they wanted for their bid days, whether it was because they didnt have enough money or vendors couldnt provide with the amount of notice.  So I'm glad, in that prospective, that I will be able to save for the things that are most important to me, be able to shop around for a great venue and give my favorite vendors plenty of notice so I'm sure to book everything I want.  Not so bad when you look at it that way.  And I figure while I'm focusing on school, it will fly by!

My fiance and I had been together a little more than six and a half years when we got engaged in Oct. We're not getting married until Oct. 2012. We're not in school or anything. We're 25 and moved out of our home state three years ago. The reason we're waiting is because we're paying for the wedding ourselves so we need time to save up money. We bought a condo last winter so a lot of our savings went to that first.
