Snarky Brides

REALLY bad at lurking ...

I'm sure that you've noticed me hanging around by now, so I figured I should introduce myself and see if I can sit at your table ...

This is my second wedding, FI's first. We're planning a ceremony/reception at a family member's cottage on the lake for next August. I have two kids, ds is 12 and dd is 9. Dd lives with us and ds wants to live with his dad - tough for me, but it's his call. We all get along, but distance is the thing. I moved for work last year, so I'm now a two day drive from ds, and miss him terribly, but love where we are living now.

We're both teachers and go back to school next week. I'm starting in a new school (high school English and other subjects - will find out tomorrow what they will be), and FI teaches at middle school. We live in a northern community of about 7500 people, and there is nowhere to shop for the wedding. We just bought a house and are building a shed/garage in the yard. We're doing it ourselves, and trying to get as much of it done as possible before we go back to work.

Other than that, I love to read, just wrote my first novel, am big into snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and am learning to golf. I hang out on the Getting in Shape board mostly because I've got 15 to go - have lost 40 so far.

So that's me. Can I hang out here with the cool kids???

  • There are cool kids here?

What was your novel about?  Well done on the weight loss!

  • The kids here are cooler than the ones in my head ...

My novel is about an old lady. She lives alone, but it wasn't always like that. Her house is full of pictures and very homey, but now it's just her. She's pretty active, but still lonely. One afternoon she goes for a stroll and comes home to find a crying teenage girl sitting on her front step. The girl claims to be her ganddaughter, but the old lady can't say for certain because her daugher has cut all ties with her.

Eventually, they figure out that it IS her granddaughter, and she's having some seriously rough times. Turns out the girl's mother told her that her grandmother (the old lady) died years ago, but the girl - Hannah - found a card that the old lady had sent her mother and used the address to track her down.

The old lady develops a relationship with Hannah, her little brother and their dad, but not her daugher. She still wants nothing to do with the old lady, and finally the grandmother decides that it's time to explain why her ungrateful daughter told her family that she was dead. Part two is her story.

Part three is the fallout from her revelations about her past.

Submitted it to a publisher a couple of months ago. Trying not to think too much about it, but checking emails all the time, hoping for word saying that they want it!

  • Hello Jenny, we're not cool really. I'm starting to think we are the rejects.

Sorry you are so far from DS. I'm about 3 hours from my son which is hard enough, so I feel your pain.

    Where abouts are you?

  • Hi Jenny!  Welcome.

    You're cool, kd.  Cool

Your novel sounds really good.  Do you have puppies or kittys?  We require pictures.

I live in Labrador, in a town named Happy Valley - Goose Bay. It's part of Newfoundland and Labrador (obviously, duh). My ds lives in Paradise, which is on the eastern most part of the island...

We have an assortment of pets - I will post pics this evening. We have Chicot, the elder. He's a husky that FI rescued from the northern Ontario forests about ten years ago. Then there's Lily (aka Lily-bean because she was about the size of a jelly bean when I got her). She's some sort of terrier mix, and is almost a year and a half. I also left Henry, my border collie lab back in Paradise with my ds.

We have a rescue cat too, he just hasn't made it this far. Staying with FMIL until we can get him shipped up.

  • Aww LesPaul, he (or she) looks a lot like my Henry! I miss him so much. He and I used to cross country ski together - he LOVED to run!

my last message got cut off. That's the worst part of living here - awful internet. We're relying on the cell towers, so when they're busy, we're SOL. They're installing more fibre op this fall, so I might actually get some good connections!

I was trying to say that I'd post doggie pics after I was done with supper (and possibly more rafter raising. Feeling a little Amish these days!)

Thanks for the positive novel vibes.

  • Hey Jenny! I'm glad to see a fellow Canadian. I live in Ottawa, Ontario myself.
I've always wanted to visit Newfoundland. It's just sooo beautiful there.

Sounds like a great story your writing so far. Great job!!

Hey! I've got a huge family, and one cousin just moved back to Ottawa. She lived there for a while a few years back, and loved it. I grew up just outside of St. John's, but moved to Goose Bay a year ago. HUGE change, but I'm loving it here!

Thanks! I'm hoping to hear something this fall about the manuscript. I sent it to the publishing house that seemed to have the most similarly styled novels, so hopefully it's the right fit!

    Nice to virtually meet you!

Ya...Ottawa is great to live, but to be honest I find it very bland. It's a government city....nuff said. I would love to live out there personally. I love nature and being close to water. One day I hope to visit at least.

Well be sure to keep us updated! I shall keep my fingers crossed for you! It would be great to be published!!

Nice to virtually meet you as well! I hope you have a great long weekend! <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

I've heard that before too. I grew up just outside of St. John's and the weather is typically awful. No one lives there for the weather, that's for sure. Since moving to Labrador I've gotten to experience all FOUR seasons! That's a novelty! It gets damn cold here, but it's also been a hot, dry summer. Frost tonight though. I'm not ready for the summer to end.

    Have a great weekend yourself!
