How did you meet FI?

Re: How did you meet FI?

  • FI and I met while working on the Obama campaign in Wisconsin in 2008.  I had been working as a field organizer since June and was told to meet the new organizers for the region at our office.  I was a little crabby as it was my first day off in two months and one of them had called me at 7 am to tell me they were on their way up from Madison.  I went into the office to meet up with them and walked through the back door to see a great looking man talking on his phone.  My initial thought was "wonderful, that is all I need, working next to this hot guy for the next several months".  I quickly sent him to his supporter housing and went on my way.  I spent the next several days showing him around, getting him acclimated to the county, and lots of flirting.  On my birthday (four days later), we all thought we'd go out for a quick drink after call time...but unfortunately he dropped his cell phone between the stairs in the office and it was stuck.  I tried desperately to help find it so that he would still be able to go out for drinks, lucky for me, he went out anyway.  We had a couple of beverages and great conversation and then went back to the office to get our cars.  Before we left we went up on the roof of our office building for fun.  We shared our first kiss on the roof and the rest is history.  Two short months later, I agreed to move to California after the campaign.
  • My story is so lame.  We met on MySpace, not too long after I moved to Ohio.  I did a search for men between the ages of 25 and 35, who were non-religious and college-educated.  There were 3 in the whole city and I went on dates with all of them!
  • My friend Amanda is friends with Fi through the fire department. He is a firefighter and EMT and she is an EMT. They became friends, and on Mike's 34th birthday she insisted I go to the bar with her for her friend's birthday. I objected but then conceeded. I warned her not to set me up. She had already told me about him, but I refused because he was 33 and lived at home. Well when I walked into the bar, he happened to be looking at the door and I thought he was cute. Turns out he happened to be the birthday boy! Amanda introduced us and that was it. We talked all night, kissed, exchanged numbers and went to the movies two days later. We got engaged a year and a half after that, and it's all Amanda's fault!

  • We grew up in the same city but went to different high schools. We both had our first summer jobs at 16 a a mini-putt place in town and met through work. We lost touch for a little while and re-connected in college (went to different colleges too!)

  • I had just broken up with a guy and joked to my coworker/friend that she needed to hook me up with one of her friends. She said she only had two guy friends who were single or weren't baby daddies (her words not mine!!).  She showed me FI's picture on Myspace and I agreed to meet him.

We were supposed to go to another coworker's bonfire before going to her friend's house where her husband and all of his guy friends were (including FI). Well, as the night went on it didn't look like we were going, so I proceeded to get hammered since I wasn't driving. At the last minute she was like "oh lets go!" so we went. Apparently FI was hammered too, but we didn't realize the other was hammered as well and we tried to have the most sober/hammered conversation probably known to man.

He came over to my friend's house the next day to watch the Colts game before driving back to where he lived (2 hours away). He asked for my number and the rest is history. We've been together 4 years and dated long distance for a year and a half before I moved to be with him.

Our friend who hooked us up and her husband (FI's high school friend) will be in the wedding. She said it was her first and only successful attempt at match making.
  • This may be long.

I sailed from DC to St Martin at the same time H was sailing from Franc to St Martin.  The boats arrived within 12 hours of each other and the marina docked us next to each other.  That night both of the crews went out and hit the bar hard (see lots of booze involved).  Turns out H was interested but did nothing about it since I was leaving in 24 hours.

Four months later I fly down to St Martin to sail the boat back home.  Much to my surprise I see an awesome pair of shoulders walking towards me on the dock and they were still attached to H!  He asked me to meet for drinks that night and the rest is history (again, much booze).

I found out later that everytime the race crew flew to the island he was looking to see if I had come back.  He gave up when he realized that the winter was ending and the boat would be going home.  It never crossed his mind that I might have been delivery crew for this boat and not race crew...

  • We met at work, had our cubes across from one another, had lunch together everyday, hung out online playing video games - for four years while I was in a long distance relationship.

Thankfully, the long distance guy dumped me and two months later, H asked me out.  We don't work together anymore, but that's actually for the best!
  • Through mutual friends at a party in 10th grade.  We hit it off right away (he broke up with his GF a few weeks later) and 7 1/2 years later here we are : )

I just read through the other responses pertaining the alcohol being involved.

There was definitely alcohol involved in ours and I'm pretty sure FI was also smoking illegal plants at the time as well. I have no idea how we managed to have a conversation that made us want to talk to each other again after that night. I think I blabbed on about my brother being in the secret service or something for an hour.
  • J and I met on jdate.  It's an online dating site for Jewish people.   He messaged me "What are you doing home on a Friday night?" Ummmmmmmm...hi pot, I'm kettle.  Pleasure to meet you :-)

  • Aw, I love all these stories!

DH and I went to high school together and were in marching band. He was 2 years ahead of me (in my sister's grade). I thought he was hot and had a huge crush on him. All my friends and my sister told him. He was flattered but didn't want to date anyone. Fast forward 9 years and he goes on facebook to find classmates in our area. I was the only one who popped up and he sent me a message. I thought it was a joke and didn't respond for a week. When we finally got together we hung out 4 times in the first week. After our first official date I told my coworkers that I was going to marry him. After 2 weeks we said I love you. Now we've been married for almost 8 months.

  • I love these stories - good idea, Marina!

I was really mean to H at first. I honestly just thought he was such a cocky jerk, and I was. not. interested. I only went to his stupid birthday party because he told me everyone in our class was going (which was true), and it's hard to make friends with Chileans when you're on study a broad.

He swears I liked him from the get-go and was just looking for an excuse to talk to him. Doesn't matter that these are my feelings and therefore clearly I am the one who knows how I felt, he insists he's right. Drives me insane.

FI and I met in a bar as well, only there was no mutual friends.  I was out with my friends, he was out with his and we both ended up at the bar together waiting to order drinks.  His pick up line?  "You're short".

We talked for about 2 and a half hours in the bar and even (very sarcastically, obviously) agreed that we would get married in 3 years.  He even put it as an appointment in his phone as "marry that one girl from that one bar".  That was 11/21/08 and we are getting married on 11/5/11...so 2 weeks shy of our 3 year anniversary.

  • Yeah I could have sworn I talked FI's ear off on the first night we met, but he thought I was quiet. Clearly we were not 100% with it. :)

My FI and I have known each other since we were both 11 years old. I moved into the neighborhood about 8 houses down the street from him. We went to the same elementary and junior high schools. He always had a huge crush on me but I never gave him a chance. All throughout high school and even after he kept in touch and would ask me out but I would always turn him down. It wasn't till 3 years ago that I finally gave him that chance. It took him 14 yrs.

  • Parking lot pimpin.

I wish I had a better story........but his pick up line was.  I love when girls can drive a stick shift.  And he was being totally serious about the car, not about sex.  Of course I didn't know that at the time and blew him off for a while.
