I'm a weirdo - white BM dress

So, I know this is super non-traditional and people will think it's tacky or that they are just in shock but we've been to like 8 stores for my sister to try on bridesmaid dresses and we found nothing we like. I mean nothing that was suitable for the wedding and that my sister would feel comfortable in. I'm only having her as a BM so maybe all the options were overwhelming but I'm pretty low key.

So, last night we are looking and there was an ivory short dress that has a similar neckline to mine and has a bit of a flare at the bottom (honestly, if I were a skinny thang it would make a great rehearsal dinner dress) and I told her to try it on. I was at a wedding where the wedding party was all in a white and the men in light gray and LOVED the look of it.

Well, the dress looked AMAZING on her. It was exactly the style I wanted, it had pockets for her "things" and the color is a bit darker than my very light, almost white ivory shoes. Since the dress is cut very 50s ish we're going to add a bit of gray netting as a peek-a-boo to downplay the white, simple jewlery like floating pearls or diamonds since her dress has a bit of bling along the waist and gray shoes.

I love love love the dress on her. Now, my grandmother and my fiances grandmother were in complete shock about me allowing her to wear white to my wedding. I'm not a bride who feels shown up and honestly if she feels amazing in her dress then it'll show in the pictures and throughout the day. My mom was stuck on the whole "Pippa wore white" and my gram was so "This isn't England" LOL. I would never wear white to another brides wedding but I could give a crap what people wear to mine as long as it isn't jeans LOL.

Anyway, it's dones but I can only imagine what people will say.  The church and reception will be decked in mostly all white with hints of gray so I think it'll  look beautiful My dress is simple with a lot of setailing and a double, very detailed mantilla veil -  I think they'll know who the bride is.

  • I don't think its bad a bad idea at all. As a matter of fact, I was watching My Fair Wedding last week and David was begging for the bride to let the girls wear white (it was a winter wonderland theme) and she nixed it. I thought it looked beautiful.

The key would be in the following. Their dresses cannot overshadow yours in terms of detail. Make your flowers more pronounced. And add color to them in accessories, shoes, etc and it should look lovely.

  • Exactly. It does have detail but mine has so much that when placed together, you could see she looked like a maid and is carrying a very simple orange bouquet with gray ribbon and mine will be more elaborate. I'll add the pic below. I honestly think if someone was having a cute backyard or picnic wedding this would be a great dress for less than 200 it was so reasonable and once we add the gray peek from the bottom it'll look even better. The dress is a little big however when it's tailored the skirt will flare out a little more  and her hands are in the pockets so it's laying funny. Oh, there are straps but we're removing them. If the dress was in gray no one would think twice but becaue it's creamy white- we shall see.

  • There will always be people who disagree and don't like your ideas! I was contemplating having all of my girls wear a white or ivory :)

It look like you have it very well thought out, and if it's what you want, I say go with it!

  • I like the dress! It's your day, do what you want! If I were having bms I wouldn't care if they wore white, probably because I really want a black dress lol
  • Traditionally bridesmaids dressed similarly to the bride to confuse evil spirits and enemies. Lol. That tradition evolved into bridesmaids all wearing the same dress. Now anything goes from different dresses in the same colors to each one wearing completely different dresses.

  • According to old fashioned traditions, the only color that is unacceptable for bridesmaid's to wear is black (sorry girls who's BMs are wearing black!).  Honestly, I wouldn't think twice about any color the BMs are wearing.  And hey, if it's good enough for the queen of england (yes Victoria's BMs wore white too), then it's good enough for you!

  • Go for it! Honestly, old traditions are going out the door for so many weddings these days, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. :)
