Job Searching Advice (kind of long).

Re: Job Searching Advice (kind of long).

  • Sounds like you are all over this job search thing and are doing your best. I really hope you get snatched up by someplace wonderful soon! It is really exhausting to keep putting yourself out there like you've been doing.

28K for those pre-req's is terrible! Even in the Midwest where the cost of living/salaries adjusts down. Out here it's the same... Once I graduate, I can plan on making the same as Master's level clinicians, unless I also teach, supervise, and/or do private practice. Most of my professors have 3 jobs, for the variety and also the money. I love when people are like, bet you can't wait to make the big bucks once you finish grad school! I'm like, yeah, I'll be waiting for a pretty long time. I blame the insurance companies. They suck.

  • Sorry that I posted and ran, but it looks like Smokey took care of the explanation of Linked In. You know that you can email me your resume and I'd be happy to look it over for you and give you any pointers. I can also ask my dad if he's got a spare outplacement manual at his office. Those things have a ton of awesome job hunting tips.

[QUOTE]JK-don't forget that lots of people post for their ideal candidate so if you meet some of the requirements you should still apply.

I do when I can.  Like if I don't have quite enough experience or a certain type of experience.  Some of the online applications are so "smart" though that you have to enter your years of experience and if you don't meet the minimum it doesn't let you continue.  That's lame.
  • are you trying to find a job in mental health with a BA? if so then you're going to have a VERY hard time.

what about going back to school?
  • I'm not trying to get a therapist job.  There are plenty of other jobs in the mental health field you can get with a BS/BA and experience (which I have).  I have some grad school, but I left my program because it wasn't a good fit.  I AM going back to school, but I need a job in the meantime.  I'm mostly looking for jobs in corrections though because I'm better qualified for that.

This isn't true.  I'm in the mental health field with only a B.S and we employ plenty of people with that.  I actually help people find jobs, ironically (you're not in the DC area, are you?).  You probably have, but just to make sure- many non-profits are doing very well and hiring.  I'd keep all of your education listed because it really may end up helping you out.  I would def keep trying to volunteer in this field because gaps in employment don't look good.  I would also try to stay away from unrelated jobs because the longer you're out of this field, the harder it is to get in (however, given this economy I think future employers will be understanding).  Have you tried gov't jobs, Dept of Justice would relate to your correctional experience.  Also, you said you applied to be an RC, many times those non-profits have other jobs too, such as job coaches.  I would send my resume and cover letter through mail to every place you're interested in, whether or not they're hiring.  Also, try to avoid those online apps.  They're awful.  And honestly, the ADA requires them to have an alternative.

I know this is super long, but hopefully some parts are helpful and I'm not wayy late :)

  • Psichick, I agree with JK and mryan. I know plenty of people with BA/BS jobs in this field. In fact, many of the "mental health counselor" jobs I'm looking into taking on while I finish my dissertation are BA-level, so I can't apply. A good friend of mine has been counseling kids in a youth delinquency program for 10 years, and only got his BA 5 years ago at the same time I did. He runs a private practice now for kids that works with schools and the courts, but has licensed providers that co-run the agency with him. It's all about networking for him. Plus, I think BA-level jobs are the newer trend in the current economy, because unfortunately they are cheaper hires.

Are there less barriers with a grad school degree and/or license? Yes. But is it impossible without one? Not by any means. Besides, J&K has stated before that she intends to go back to school, but she should work in the meantime if she can to benefit her resume and her future academic work in the field.

  • Have you checked out the State jobs website?  There are a few positions working with blind kids in Faribault; not real close to Rochester but it could be worse.  Otherwise there *may* be a mental health program assistant job opening up in St. Paul, but I want it so you'll have to fight me for it!  Not sure if I have enough qualifications for it, but I bet you would.

Also, Workforce Center website, I assume you check that?  I have some more places in the Cities bookmarked that I'll pm you in the morning, I'm tired and want some sleep before a friggin 10 hour day at work.  Blech, if we didn't need my income to help with the mortgage, I'd quit.

Otherwise, I got nothing but some good vibes for ya.

  • Ahhh I just remembered to check back.  Yes, I've applied with non-profits, yes I've checked the State website, yes I've checked with many, many gov't agencies, and me and the WFC site are good friends.  And no, I'm not in the DC area.  Blech.

    Thanks Mocha!
