Do you sell your dress after the wedding or preserve it?!?

I'm considering selling my dress. I just don't know if it's the right thing to do!!!  It cost me a little over $1300 so I'm sure I could get at least $600 for it...but I'm torn.  Help!!  It's a gorgeous gown that didn't show any back fat!  It was something that made me feel beautiful and I'm sure could make someone else feel equally stunning.  I don't really have a lot of storage space but am hesitant to let it go.  What to do...?  Help!!  I'm torn.....

Re: Do you sell your dress after the wedding or preserve it?!?

  • I had mine turned into a christening gown, bonnet, and blanket.  I figured that way it can at least stay in the family since what are the odds that a future generation would want to wear my wedding dress as-is?

I love the idea about turning it into a blanket. That's great.

  • I think turning it into other potential heirlooms is a lovely idea.  My dress is currently preserved and sitting in my mother's closet.

That said you shouldn't feel like you HAVE to keep it.  If you don't see any future use for it and don't feel a really strong emotional attachment go ahead and sell it.
  • I likewise will be attempting to sell mine. I don't have enough space in my apartment as it is, the last thing I need is an article of clothing in my closet that I will never wear again. Plus I'm poor and any money I can get back on the dress would be desperately wanted.

  • i was going to sell mine- then my FI was sort of sad- he was like but but but what if our little girl wants to look like mommy (we dont even have any kids yet) so I will be saving mine in some way- i like the idea of reusing it maybe into some sort of dress up clothes or very princess like pillow cases - I could not stomach a "trash the dress" photo session like some others might do

  • So for those of you selling your dress, where/how will you do it?  I don't have a huge attachment to the dress--quite the contrary, in fact. I'd love to find another woman my size who can benefit from a cheaper used dress.  I remember only too well how overwhelming it was to shop for dresses in my size and I'd love to help someone.
  • I plan on posting mine here, on TK Classifieds and on recycledbride.com or oncewed.com.  You can also post it on Craiglist.   Get it cleaned and then post it.  :)

Look into donating it to the Brides Project. Where it would be considered a good Karma gown and all the proceeds will go to Cancer after, thats what I plan on doing with mine.

That's an awesome idea actually! You do have a point about future generations most likely not wearing a dress that's great now as is.

  • I plan on selling mine actually since I managed to get a sample from DB's $99 sale and chances are, I'd be able to make that back. Or I may donate it to a local organization here called Operation Glass Slipper.

  • Since mine is not standard wedding white I am going to donate it to the free Prom Gown Town one of our local radio stations puts on. I'm sure a bigger high school girl would love to find a pretty dress in her size on the racks.

  • I'm likely going to sound like a huge Grinch here...but I paid over $1300 for the gown.  I can't afford to donate it. Even if I only get a few hundred for it....I just can't do that.  I'd keep it instead.  As far as cleaning it goes, I don't want to dump another $200 into a gown.  I'd rather sell it 'as is' and let the recipient know.  It's too expensive.  At some point you have to weigh your investment and see if you can recoup.....
  • I'll either sell it or donate it to the Brides Project in Ann Arbor.
