First Dance Song Idea

I really love the song "To Make You Feel My Love" and we'd like it to be our first dance song, possibly. We are considering two others that fit us well, but this song is so unique - you don't hear it a lot, and I like that. I especially love Adele's version, and would do that over Garth's. Anyways, I have one hang up with the song. The line that says, "I know you haven't made your mind up yet..." annoys me! I know it shouldn't, as people probably won't be listening to the lyrics as much as I think they will. I just wish that one line wasn't in the song. It's just funny because our minds were made up 5 years ago that we'd be together forever, so it's just what bothers me in the song. Does anyone else feel this way about this song or have a problem with a similar song? Also, what are some other first dance ideas? We're also considering "Then" by Brad Paisley and "Lucky" by Colbie Calliat and Jason Mraz, which are both great too. I just love the first song so much, and wish every line was equally awesome! Thoughts? Go ahead, tell me I'm thinking too much about it.... :)

  • I think it is fine that it annoys you but your right that the guests probably won't be listening to the lyrics that closely.  Personally I love "Lucky" by Colbie Calliat and Jason Mraz.
  • That bothered me about that song, too, but I doubt anyone would notice - and if they did, I don't think they'd read too much into it. Bob Dylan's original is great, as is Billy Joel's cover in case you wanted to hear some other versions of that song :)

The song we ended up choosing (Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me by Mel Carter) says something about "if we ever say adieu" and that bothered me, but I realized I'm probably the only one who will listen carefully to the lyrics and then analyze them.

Pick the song you like, don't fret over one line :)
  • We're dancing to "To Make You Feel My Love."  It has a lot of meaning to us.   As for the "I know you haven't made your mind up yet" part, to us that kind of takes us back to the beginning of our relationship when I was feeling a little bit guarded (from past relationships), but fiance just rode it out and continued to be amazing because he knew that I would "make my mind up" about him.

  • I would say whatever floats your boat, it's your day, as long as you & your FI love it, then it should be the one
Never compare your love story with those in the movies, because they're written by scriptwriters, yours is written by GOD.
  • Great song. You are probably the only one who will recognize the lyric... Your guests will be too busy  "oohing" and "ahhhing" at the B&G's first dance :)
  • Just no Olivia Newton John "Endless Love".  For the love of God, no Celine or Olivia.  If I hear one more, I'll die : )   My sorority lil sis did "Make you feel my life" and it was amazing.  On the TV show parenthood Jasmine actually walke down to an acoustic choir version of it and it brought me to tears.
  • Thank you, ladies! Makes me feel better about it! :)

[QUOTE]Actually, people DO listen to the lyrics. Bad wedding music choices have been a popular topic here and on other boards. I cringe whenever I hear "Somewhere, Over the Rainbow" at weddings, because the song is about being trapped in a dull life, desperate to get out.  Dorothy sings it in "Wizard of Oz" because she's sick of life on the farm.  The music is lovely, but the song just isn't appropriate for a wedding. Same for U2's "Beautiful Day" which is NOT about a beautiful day. I went to a wedding where the couple danced their first dance to Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night."  I realize I'm a lot older than most of ya'll, and maybe you're not familiar with the song, but you can Google the lyrics.  Tell me if you think it's appropriate.  I tried to hold it together to be polite, but when they got to a certain verse, I had to flee to the bathroom.  I was joined by several other guests, some of them elderly, and we laughed until we cried.  It was just too much.

  • @ Retreadbride-The Rod Stewart song! OMG!!! I never paid attention to that lyric but just googled them. Scarred... I am officially scarred! I can't imagine hearing that at a wedding :/
  • I would go with Lucky by Collbie Calliet and Jason Mraz.

  • Make you feel my love is a beautiful song! Adele could sing pretty much anything and it would still be awesome, but have you listened to her song called "Lovesong"? Me and my husband are doing our first dance off of it Laughing. It just sweeps you up and sends you in a daze!!!
