History can be Fun!!! (yes I am a nerd)

So i'm a nerd. the tradition :Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue . . .  came from an old English poem/rhyme

Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

(the blue is from: Mary in blue, lover be true.)

What was/is your something old, new, borrowed and blue (if you have picked any yet).

Also I know not everyone is army, but there was an old cavalry tradition to wear a yellow ribbon(it is really older then that so it may carry into other branches or groups I just didn't do research - sadly I knew this without aid). A variation on a  400? years old song called "round her neck she wore a yellow ribbon" was a popular marching song and the version popular today (loose term) was written in the early 1900s.

because I cant expect you guys to be as nerdy as me:

Around her hair she wore a yellow ribbon
She wore it in the springtime
In the merry month of May
And if you ask her why the heck she wore it
She wore it for her soldier who was far far away

Has anyone incorporate the yellow ribbon into their wedding day attire? I have known quite a few army and navy brides who have and was wondering how common it was.

feel free to laugh at me now :)

The yellow ribbon song has actually been turned into a marching cadence that we used to say marching all the time.  My grandpa said they marched to it when he joined the MC back in 1945.

I didn't do wear a yellow ribbon.  I don't really see the point of doing it for your wedding.  It's supposed to represent that you are waiting on your guy to return from war.  If he's there at your wedding, he's not away.  KWIM?

MH is infantry and I was an MP.  I had one little infantry blue ribbon and one MP green ribbon tied around my tiny bouquet of yellow roses.  We had a small JOP ceremony.  None of H's family from TX was able to make it.  I had the yellow roses to rep TX for him.

I did not wear the yellow ribbon however that is a very cool idea.  Also my sixpence was not in my shoe but in my bra. My shoes were open. HAA so I guess that still counts.

Something old/stolen- mother's pearls my father gave to her when he was deployed one year.  I say stolen only for fun as she let me use them for my first job interview and I got the job so I say they have always brought me luck and a little piece of my dad since he died when I was two.  I just never gave them back after the interview. She is ok with that.

Something borrowed- my hair.  One of my friends got married about a year earlier and she used the clip in hair extensions so she let me borrow them.  Yeah weird I know.

    Something blue- my shoes

    Something- my dress

I have to say I didn't follow tradition much. I picked my outfit and then basically tried to figure out what could fit into what category.

Something old was my hardest one so I was lame and said my engagement ring even though it's only a year old.

Something new was basically everything- headband, necklace, earrings

Something borrowed- My bracelet from my mom's friend

Something Blue- This was my favorite. It is my moms ring. I love it. Here is a picture!

That is so cool!! I love new history facts.

Something Old: My mom's veil. While she is not "that" old, she wore 37 years ago!

Something New: My dress of course :)

Something Borrowed: I wore a pair of earrings from my MOH

Something Blue: My shoes. I had a friend in college who told me I wasn't trendy enough to wear blue shoes at my wedding. I showed her!!!!

Here is a link to some of my wedding photos (<---------) my photographer posted on her blog. There is a awesome close up picture of my mom's veil!!

Something old: the diamond in my engagement ring - it was my great-grandma's.  When she passed away, she left it for my Mom, who has been keeping it in a safe deposit box for 30 years.  The diamond has been in my family for over 100 years!

Something new: my dress!  My shoes!  So excited about both!

Something borrowed: probably some of my jewelry.  I haven't figured out what I'm wearing yet, but my Mom wants me to wear her pearls that she wore for her wedding.  I think I want dangling earrings, though, so maybe just a necklace or something.

Something blue: not a clue, probably my underwear!!!

Something Old: My wedding ring was my great grandmother's in the twenties. It's lovely.

Something New: I have two helicopter pins going on my sash. The night we met, I had a helicopter pin on my purse next to my Obama button, and it's what originally got us talking beyond me making fun of his friend's football team.

Something Borrowed: I still need to work that out...my grandmother has offered me the diamond earrings her mother wore in her wedding (the one with my ring), but I'm nervous to wear them. They're fancy.

    Something Blue:

Something old: my great grandfather (from England) brought home a cross necklace when he came home from the war (WW1) after being POW by the Germans for 4 years for my grandma. My grandma and mom both wore it on their wedding day so I'm having it put into my bouquet.

Something new: my dress and my hot pink shoes!

Something borrowed: my mom's anniversary pearl necklace (it will have 36 pearls on it..my parent's anny is on Aug 24)

Something blue: I am having the florist do a blue silk "flower" in my bouquet and attaching the cross in it.

And I'm taping the silver six pence that my mom and grandma both wore in my shoe!

Old: a hankie crocheted by the mother of a family friend. New: dress and shoes. Borrowed: my uncle's fraternity pin. We have a small, close family and my uncle died when I was a junior in high school. I wore another one of his fraternity pins at graduation but my cousin and I both wore the same one at our weddings. Blue: I had a US Navy garter.

    something new: my shoes
something borrowed: either a brooch or a rank
something old: a brooch from my grandma or one of my grandpa's rings
    something blue: garter

As for the yellow ribbon, It may say "Supporting someone over seas" But thats not what it should mean. I will have a yellow ribbon some where to support past, present, and future military at our wedding. Whether they have deployed or not. I support them
Military Brides December 2011 Siggy. Holiday picture with your SO. We suck and don't have one :/ Those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter.

Something old: I had pieces from my mom's, and both my grandmothers wedding dresses sewn inside my dress. A penny from the year I was born, my dad gave my sister and I both one from the year we were born (1972 & 1988) that he's saved since he brought us home from the hospital..

    Something new: Shoes, dress

Something borrowed: earrings and bracelet from MIL

Something blue: My undies.  They were baby blue from VS.  I totally don't reccomend them though, after I washed them they were all faded and some of the rhinestones came off. I mean, no I wasn't planning on wearing panties (sorry if anyone hates that word.. it's not my favorite either) that say "Kiss the Bride" on a random Tuesday, but I mean.. duh, I'm going to wash them, why should they look like crap after 1 washing?! whatever, end of that rant.
I also had the pieces from my mom's and grandmother's dresses sewn on with a really pretty blue thread.

    This was super cute Irish!!
