Wino evening roundup

Re: Wino evening roundup

  • Thank you for reminding me birdie.  I definitely don't want to be in my ILs position - 50 years old with nothing but one person's pension for retirement.  I'm pretty sure they owe more on their mortgage than we do, too.  I often wonder how H turned out the way he did - my ILs are totally gullible and fall for every get rich quick scheme there is, have absolutely no savings skills, and think that a 401k is some sort of conspiracy.  WTF?
  • Do any of you do Christmas savings accounts? My mom has been trying to get me to open one. It automatically deducts a certain amount a month from your checking account and then lets you access it in October. I always suck and wait until November to save. :(
  • Drama, I really worry about my bro and SIL who are in their 30s and still haven't started 401ks. I know they wanted to pay off debts, etc but I feel like putting money into my 401k is more important right now than paying off my little CC debt.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Wino evening roundup : The problem is, we have to spend a week of H's vacation and $1000 every year visiting family.  Add my H's major fear of being like his parents (broke with no retirement) and all our extra money goes to pay down the heloc/mortgage and into retirement.  We have a hell of a retirement for two people our age, but no fun trip memories.  I've been trying to change his mind for the past 8 years, but the man is scared to death he's going to turn into his parents if we decide to spend money on a vacation.  What I need to do is cut into my shopping budget (hey, we all have our faults!) and start saving some of that for some sort of fun vacation.  Even just a long weekend to San Francisco would be fun.

<div>Yeah - well, I can't help you with that.  We both contribute a fair amount to our retirements but not quite the max, and we figure having a mortgage is a necessary evil - something that we just will always have as part of our budget.  Could you put together a budget that still pays a little extra to retirement, and the mortgage, but not as much as currently and includes a "vacation savings" amount each month?  If you really want to travel, and never get to do it because of his stance on money I'd hate to see you start to resent him for it or feel held back because of it.  You need to get some of what you want out of your finances too - it can't all be about work or retirement or whatever.</div><div>
</div><div>How much vacation does your H get?  When will he get more?  I get my 3rd week next August!!!  So psyched :)</div>
  • Look and me being a post hoar. ::drinks more Riseling::
  • I've never heard of that birdie!  luckily i dont have t buy many gifts, so i only need a few hundred dollars.

I'm kinda the opposite.  I do contribute a bit to my 401K, but not that much.  I honestly wish I could cash it out and use it to pay towards my cc's.  I'm of the mindset that who knows if I will even be alive to enjoy my retirement?  I would rather enjoy myself now why I'm physically able.  <div>I would much rather be debt free now, I can always contribute more later.  </div>

  • Our credit union back home does it! I had a vacation savings account there, but there weren't the restrictions about only getting access to it at certain times of year like there were for the xmas account. I think i might have opened it up because there was an extra tenth of a percent APY. Whooptido :)
  • Hi everyone!  What have I missed tonight?

[QUOTE]Andy - Chicago is Chicago.  Well, we really haven't gotten much snow this year, so that makes me a happy girl.  I feel like an abandoned child with you and beachy gone lately.

I'm sorry sweetie.  Where is beachy?  Still at home?  I miss you during the day when you have your hands in somebody's body cavity.

I totally get that. It runs through my mind too. I just look at FI who is 31 and has a crazy amount in his 401k now because he invested a lot early and then at his dad who has saved a crazy amount as well. I try to tell myself if I can get my CC paid off in a relatively short amount of time, the extra money I spend on interest will be worth it.
  • Birdie, we do save some every month.  It's not an account like you're talking about, just an ING account, but it helps with the December credit card bill, for sure.

Loopy, it is about time to sit down and revisit the budget anyway, so good call on that one.  I'm getting a whopping .5% raise in March, wahoo!  I think it amounts to about $25 a month, if I did my math right (which I probably didn't, knowing me).  I'll have to put that toward our vacation fund, for sure.

The one argument we have is over money.  He wants to save every last penny and I want to spend it on some stuff.  You'd think I'm a totally spender, but that's the funny thing.  I'm totally not.  My mom always says she thought I was the cheapest person alive, until she met my H Cry  As much as we joke around about it, I know he has a major fear of being retired and having no money, and I get that.  We're young, we have time to travel, and since we don't plan on having kids there's no sense of urgency to do it before we have kids or anything like that.  most of the time I'm totally fine with it...until I see pictures or hear stories of other peoples' travels.  honestly, I'm not even sure I'd like a caribbean vacation - I'm totally not a lie around on the beach kind of person - but I'd like the chance to find out!
  • Oh nothing Mica, me just talking way too much :)
  • Yeah, i think she's gone for another week.  I wish i was here during the day, it's so much busier then!

  • Drama, FI and I have one of the ING Orange accounts. Of course, right after I open it, the stocks crashed and the interest percentage went with it.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Wino evening roundup : Missy I'm gonna send some hugs your way. I've seen your posts about missing OH and not being happy in GA and missing being home for the holidays. It sucks I know. It won't always be that way though. ::hugs::

Sorry, walked away for a few. Thanks for thinking about me.

Sometimes I feel like I whine too much, and I need to keep telling myself it is only temporary. I think I need to plaster it on my forehead so I can see it everyday. But I will say you ladies definitely help me, giving me laughs and ppl my own age to talk to.
  • My cc bills are horrendous.  the interest is killimg me..
    Photobucket
  • Dang it, it looks like she went to bed.
  • I would have a much bleaker view on my CC bill if it weren't for my bonus and tax return. They will help bring it back down to the manageble range.

I still curse the Scottsman who slammed into my car and began my downward financial spiral! :)
  • Oops, I was wrong - I get a 1% raise in March.  Still only $25 after taxes.  Oh well, that's an extra $300 a year that can go toward vacations!

  • I know it is probably really bad to do this (bc H says you are essentially paying off one cc with the other) but I just transferred the balance from the higher interest card to the lower interest one. I hate the interest, but it is better than the other. It is pretty much wedding stuff that I am sure glad we didn't blow the rest of our savings on.
  • Woo hoo!

Drama, honestly FI and I haven't gone on any glamorous vacations while we've been together. We went to Florida one year because our friend's family owns a real estate business and were able to get a timeshare at the owner's price ($100 or so a week). The year we splurged we drove to DC for a week. This past year we went to St. Louis for a weekend to see his family and catch a ball game. Then we went to my lake house for the rest of the week.
  • Yeah, I am looking forward to that tax return. It is going to be a lifesaver for us.
  • I consolidated my debt this past year Missy. I took advantage of an offer one CC had for 0% interest for 12 months. I used that to "pay off" my other CC.
  • Yeah, Missy, that's what I'm going to do as soon as I get some space cleared up on one of my cards.  I get 0% balance transfers all the time.  Definitely going to take advantage of that.

  • Last year my tax return paid for most of my wedding, this year it's all going to cc.  But that's ok, that will cut ou a large chunk of balances.
    Photobucket
  • I always just keep thining of how much money I could be putting into savings every month if I didn't have to pay so much towards ccs.  I'll get there soon!  Well, ok, not soon.  But someday.
    Photobucket
  • Yup, that is what I did. It isn't that much, but it helps with the interest. I am hoping we get a big tax return and can either pay it off or pay it down considerably.
  • I tell myself that too Kelly!

I'm kind of happy that we'll be getting married in November so we'll hopefully have bonuses and tax returns soon thereafter. :)
  • I always get like $103 back from the state.  My state is so fiscially irresponsible, i'm surprised I actually see it and it's not squandered on some politicians condo in the Swiss Alps.
