HMing in Sept? Need to worry about hurricanes?!

Sigh.  I wouldn't change my Sept 21 2013 wedding date for the world, but I can't have peonies and now I find out it is quite the hurricane season!  We were looking at Sunset Maroma Beach and was reading that Sept-Oct is rainy and hurricane-y.

Should I make this a legit worry when booking?  We will get travel insurance regardless, just in case, but am I just overreaching?

YIKES!

  • I think as long as you're getting travel insurance, don't worry about it. The chance of a hurricane actually hitting while you're there is so so slim. If you have trip insurance, you can easily re-book if that happens. You could have bad weather anywhere. I live in the Midwest and while tornadoes in our city are rare, they happen. You could go someplace else and have a flood hit or have it rain all week. No place is a 100% guarantee for good weather. I really wouldn't stress about it.

Even if you don't have a hurricane, it's definitely possible to rain pretty much the whole time. I personally wouldn't go anywhere in the Caribbean during hurricane season, but there certainly are deals to be had.

  • Do you absolutely have to go to the Caribbean?  We're honeymooning in Hawaii this September...hurricane problem solved!  How about Mexico?  Europe?  South America?  There are tons of options!

And with the flowers...have you looked into garden roses?  They look very similar to peonies and they're readily available in late summer/early fall.

I purposely avoided hurricane season when scheduling the wedding after living in New Orleans and having had more than enough of hurricanes.  Travel insurance will protect you from losing money if you end up needing to reschedule.  But if you're that worried about it you might want to consider an alternate destination where hurricanes wouldn't be an issue!

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I would not HM in the Carribean during hurricane season.

  • A good friend of mine HMed in Jamaica at the beginning of Sept. and had sun all 7 days of her HM. Just sayin'. If you have your heart set on the Caribbean, I would go. It may rain, it may not.  You could say that about ANY location. If you want a location with a guarantee of nice weather every day, well that doesn't exist, but like PPs have said, Hawaii is out of the hurricane belt. We went there last summer and absolutely loved it, but it is pricier. Not sure where you stand on budget.

  • I am going to Mexico this September for my honeymoon. I thought what the heck, bad weather can happen anywhere you go.

  • You can certainly change your coastline from Atlantic to Pacific if you're set on Mexico. Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Zihuantanejo... Any of these well known resort areas would be a good option not affected by the Caribbean hurricane season. Otherwise, Europe is a great alternative, and Hawaii has gorgeous weather pretty much year round.

</div><div>And I'm dying at the comments that it is guaranteed to rain in all of the carbbean during all of hurricane season. I've been twice in hurricane season and on the first trip it rained for half a day, and on the second, it rained for 20 minutes total. </div><div>OP, go - just get insurance.</div>

Hurricane Season and Rainy Season are not the same. Unless you are educated on the topic at hand please don't put your opinion out there.

OP, We went to Mexico in September last year and it was AMAZING. It was gorgeous. The resorts were not busy at all so it wasn't like we were going to a crazy busy tourist destination either. It was much more relaxed and we only had rain one afternoon for about a half hour and the rest of the time the weather was amazing. I would not have changed it for the world. We did get Travel Insurance and we made sure it included weather related cancellation. I would honestly ignore all the people on here that think they know everything and listen to those who have actually experienced it. It is kind of like those people who say if you step foot in Mexico you are going to get your head chopped off because of drug violence. Silly uneducated people are the ones that cause all the hype and drama.

  • Just get trip insurance, most of my trips to Mexico and the Caribbean have been during hurricane season, and I've only seen it rain once. We've always experienced beautiful weather.

If you're really concerned about it, have you considered honeymooning elsewhere? Hawaii? West coast of Mexico (Cabo, Puerta Vallarta), French Polynesia, Brazil, Europe, etc..
  • We booked our honeymoon in Mexico for this coming October 1st-10th knowing full well that it's hurricane season. We have trip insurance, just in case.

  • We booked our honeymoon oct. 7th in St. Lucia. We just got the travel insurance. There will be risks wherever you go....we figured if it doesn't work out we'll reschedule. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I can tell you that our resort booked up big time even 11 mos. in advance! We had slim pickings for rooms...so that tells you something too!

Southern Caribbean, below the hurricane belt might be a safer bet.  In any event, get trip insurance for the worst case sscenario.  Hopefully no hurricanes will be brewing when you get married!
