Puppy Update/AW

So, as many of you know... my partner and I rescued two boxer puppies from a backyard breeder on valentines day.  A few days later, they came down with parvo, and we spent the next 2 weeks taking 2 hour shifts keeping these little girls alive (subcutaneous fluids, force feeding, forcing water, meds, etc.).   They both survived, and are doing wonderfully.

Gemma Jacqueline has now been confirmed completely deaf and blind in one eye.  But, she doesn't seem to notice or give a crap.

Lola Marie is a little smaller than Gemma and is spunky !!!

They both are healthy and playing with our rottie (Sancho) and pitmix (Hector) and chasing the cat when they have a chance.  Our semi-feral cat, (Justin) loves messing with them, and he will lay out of reach and tag them as they walk by.  Or leap from the roof of the garage in front of them, tag them in the bootie, and run away.

Here they are, in all of their boxer glory:

  • Such cuties!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Yeah, if you could just send them to my house so I could hug and cuddle them, that's be great.

    In other news, adorable!
  • Yay! So glad they're doing well! :)

  • They are so cute.

A lot of white EB's are apparently deaf (though Chef is not).  Is that the same as Boxers?

Yep.  Apparantly, the same gene that creates pigment in a dog, is the gene that develops hearing.  So, white dogs have a higher rate of deafness than pigmented dogs.  It's still not "most" like a lot of people say.  As soon as I tell someone she is deaf, I get "ohhh,  Yeah. MOST white dogs are deaf!".  No they aren't.  A higher percentage of white dogs are deaf, but not "most".

So, training around our house is SUPER fun (not!).  She is too small for a vibrating collar, so we have to use a lot of foot stomping so she can feel the vibration on the floor, and hand waving to get her attention.   She is doing good with hand signals so far once we can get her attention, but her training is going to be a bigger challenge, that's for sure.

We are just glad that she didn't up totally blind and deaf.  that woulda sucked.  At least she can see us with one eye !

ETA: I'm not sure what's going  on with the funky spacing.. but, hopefully it isn't showing up all funky for ya'll.

  • good luck with training.

Does Lola guide her at all?

yes !!  Lola guides her, and Sancho & Hector do also.  She pretty much follows the pack.  Sometimes, when the rest of them are coming in the house, if she isn't directly looking at them, she will stay out in the yard wandering around, and one of the other dogs will go nudge her.  I'm pretty sure we would both be nuts if we didn't have the other dogs to help out !

Also, another not-so-cute side effect of deafness....  she barks LOUD !!!  She has absolutely no volume control, and her bark is so loud, it often will startle the rest of the dogs and they look at her hella crazy !

My son's deaf Dogo does not bark at all.  She makes these loudish whimpering noises.

Your little ones are adorable.....good luck with the training.
  • They are cuties! Thank you for taking care of them and rescue them!  I love to hear stories like this! Good luck with the training too.
