hair/makeup trial now or later?

I've been calling salons that do hair and makeup in my area.  I'm semi shocked that a few are already booked, so I'd like to decide on this sooner rather than later!

Should I trial now? So I know if I like how they do my hair/makeup? And if I don't like it, I have time to try more places? Its just crazy that some places charge the same for a trial as they do for the day of. I don't want to rack up tooo many trial $'s
Or just sign us up, and do my trial 2 months before, and hope for the best?!
What are you guys doing?

I was originally thinking I'd do it closer to October, that way everyone rememebers how they did my hair (because it never turns out the same twice!)  But I'm getting nervous that I may not like how it turns out (not to mention the fact that I'm torn on bareminerals salons or airbrush salons - I swear I change my mind every other day!)
How is this going for all of you? Easy decision? Or stressing you out (like me)?

Re: hair/makeup trial now or later?

  • I've been going to the same stylist for nine years, so I'm just letting her do her thing on wedding day and not worrying about it until then. I might do a makeup trial just because I've never had my makeup done before, but that's about it.

  • I already booked my salon, but didn't have a hair trial done. My MOH's cousin's work at one and they will be closing the salon for us that day. She said to not have my trial done until July or August.

Mine said the same - 2 months out.  Make sure you take a camera and don't rely on the person doing your hair to remember it all.

The only other piece of advice I would give is to not "hope for the best".  You have time to search for someone you love.  You can look at salon websites for actual photos of event hair they have done, or ask any of your married friends with hair/makeup that was done well for a rec.  When you book your trial, they usually will allow plenty of time.  You can always ALWAYS tell them you don't like something and they will back track and try something new or softer/more defined...whatever.  Speak up during the process to avoid having a completed look you don't care for.

  • You guys just got me thinking - just sent out some inquiries. I guess I'll figure out when to do trials and whatnot depending on what I hear from them!

  • I booked my stylist who does my hair regularily without a trial but I am going to get one closer to the wedding because I am growing my hair out. They recommended doing the trials on the day of my shower or bachelorette party so it can be 'party tested' to see how I like it for a full day too!

  • I am going for my trial on Friday.  We are having a team come to the hotel that morning so I want to make sure I like them before I sign the contract.  I have contacted quite a few salons and I have gotten a couple that are already booked so I want to make sure that I book one soon.  This is a very important part of the day so I want to make sure this gets done quickly!!

  • I would pick a stylist you like and then just go with them.  Do you have a stylist you've been using for a while?  I always found the trial to be you and your stylist working together and finding the look you want, not testing out various stylists but I could be wrong.  I booked a friend who had done my hair for years in my hometown.  She's very familiar with my never ending thick hair, and we are going to just do a trial run in July so we know what look we are going with on the day of.  She is having two girls also work that day and do the hair for the other girls and my mom.

Just to throw this out there as well -  I contacted two makeup artists yesterday for quotes (I'm still not 100% sure I will have my makeup done, but I might) and of those two - one was already booked for our date.

So - I guess now is the time to start making decisions!!

  • Thanks for the advice!
I contacted the girl that has been cutting my hair the past 3/4 years.  I'll see what she says.  I didn't think she normally does updos, but figured she might have some recommendations too.  My mom used to do hair, so other than these past 3/4 years, shes always done it!   But she doesn't want the pressure or stress on my wedding day.
Hoping I get this checked off by next week!  And yes, if you haven't booked yet - I highly recommend you do it ASAP:)
  • I did a make up trial because I never get my makeup done and wanted to make sure that the woman who was going to do it, would do what I liked.  I am doing a hair trial, but not until August.  It is with my regular hairdresser who I have been going to for years, and she has done updos on my hair before so we both are comfortable and know it'll look great!

  • I wasn't using my regular stylist (since she'll be a guest at the wedding and I just want her to enjoy herself). Before signing a contract with someone new I wanted to try her out so I went for a trial, before I even bought my dress. I'll do another closer to the wedding. I did book a makeup person without a trial and will probably do both the makeup trial and 2nd hair trial the same day, so I can see it all together.
