  There was a post like this on E today and the responses were pretty split. Technically you shouldn't be using/cashing any gifts before the wedding (definitely send TYs ASAP though). I do see your point about people wanting to balance their checkbooks.
  
  if the wedding is soonish, I would hold off on cashing them until after the wedding. I think 3 weeks would be short enough. If you really felt uncomfortable hanging on to them, you could cash them but not spend the money.   I would deposit the checks as soon as you've written the TY note, but don't spend the money until after the wedding.

  I agree to at least cash it. I can't stand writing a check for any reason and then it not being cashed for weeks. I tend to forget about it and then get mad that it took so long. I wouldn't mind if I sent a check before a wedding and it was cashed right away.

  Cash it now, send a thank you, and don't spend the money until after the wedding.  I also get frustrated if checks aren't cashed within a few days after I write it out.  I don't like knowing that it's "lurking" around, not knowing when it will be cashed-especially if I had to send it by mail, it makes me worry more!
