Weird Habits

This could be a fun one. What are your weird habits?

1. When I'm reading (either books or e-mails...) or waiting for people to respond. For some reason, I tend to hold my breath a bit and eventually let out a subtle gasp of air. I didn't know I did it until FI pointed it out. Recently my friends said they've been witnessing it for years but never felt the need to tell me. Sometimes I do it less than subtly and *I* become aware of it

2. I mostly eat one thing at a time on my dinner plate before I go on to the next. Sometimes I start by sampling a little of everything but I continue the meal eating one thing at a time. My mother also does this.

3. I leave cabinet doors open. I don't even realize i do it until I go to clean the kitchen. My parents do this too.

4. I used to leave every light in the house on, not realizing. My parents also do this.
I have trained myself to stop that to save money on electricity.

5. I friggin walk into people that I'm walking beside. I don't know why I do it.

Re: Weird Habits

  • I always walk into people when we're walking side by side. I just veer into them as we talk.

I never know what to do with my hands so I almost always cross my arms in front of me when I'm teaching. I'm slowly teaching myself to leave them at my sides so that I come across more approachable.

I am obsessed with tape/labels/price stickers/etc. Whenever I have something like that in my posession I peel it off and play with it until the stick is gone.

The excusing thing is funny, Stage, b/c I do that, too. I never imagined anyone else did it. Muppet, that is interesting b/c I can't walk by an open cabinet or random light on w/o closing it or turning it off. Drives me nuts when people leave those things! I don't know if this is weird or not, but in addition to cracking my fingers and toes, I also pop my ankles. It's really loud and usually freaks people out a little.

I thought I was the only one! I totally do this too!

My habits aren't really that weird since I know there are a lot of other people that do them. Things like:

-Rearranging frozen pizza toppings so every slice gets toppings.
    -Eating things in even numbers
-Making sure the TV volume is on an even number or a multiple of 5
-I overthink things a lot so I always reread texts or emails a few times before I send them.

Ummm I'm sure there's more that I can't think of!

Another thing I'm shocked to see that I'm not alone in! Is it the tendon or just cracking them? I do both, haha. The tendon pops out and it freaked out my physical therapist. He said if it doesn't hurt it's not a problem.

  • Muppet, I am the opposite of you. I am totally a circle eater. I also have to finish all of the food on my plate in the same "round" so I sometimes will double up on something there is more of so that I finish about the same time.

I also leave cabinets open. I just had to turn around and look at the kitchen to make sure they were closed. This has annoyed anyone I've lived with and even some people who have just visited.I honestly don't think it's a big deal myself.

I love to sing popular songs around the house where I substitute my dog's name for some of the words.

I weigh myself almost every time I go into the bathroom with the scale in it.

  • I am opposite of Muppetfan, I can't stand when cabinets and drawers are left open. I will get up from what I'm doing to close them. Both DH and MIL leave everything open. They thinks its funny that I close stuff. I need TV volumes to be on even numbers or multiples of 5s also. I can't go to sleep without a bottle/glass/cup of water by my bed, even if I hardly drink any of it that night, I need it

<div>Mee to. It creeps me out.  I do crack my big toes though.  Let's see, I have random conversations with myself in my head in French (usually in the car) to keep trying to practice.  DH hates talking to me in French, cos he thinks it's weird since we both speak English (he's fluent in French), so I don't have a lot of people to practice with.  Amazingly, I speak perfectly in my head!!  ;)</div>

  • Here's a SUPER weird one:

When I have a lot of work e-mail, I will make a game of it by sorting it in Outlook in different ways: first I will answer one sorted by sender, then one by title, then one by size, etc. I'll only do this if I am pretty up-to-date but have just received a lot of e-mail that day so I am not inconveniencing anyone.

Another work e-mail-related one: I send e-mails to my future self. I do this because I can't stand to have e-mails just sit in my inbox. So, if I get a question from a customer that I need Bob's help on, I will send Bob an e-mail with the question, and then forward the customer's e-mail to myself a few days from now so I remember to follow up if I don't hear from Bob.
  • I have to use shampoo and conditioner that matches.  I can't use them from two different brands, or two different formulas.  They have to be used with their mates, and if a shampoo doesn't have a conditioner that goes with it, then I can't use it.

I also have to have at least 3 'couples' of shampoo and conditioner in the shower at all times, to rotate around.  Same with body washes, toothpaste, and deodorant.  I hate using the same products two days in a row.

I can't sleep if I don't lay out my clothes for the next day before I go to bed.  Even if I change my mind the next day, I have to have something laid out that I think I'm going to wear.

Shoelaces have to be the same length.  Drawstrings too.

I hate going to the gas station before the light comes on.
  • Mine are mainly food related: I can only eat m&ms 2 at a time, and the colors must match, if at the end of the bag there is no remaining matches I throw the rest away. I eat french fries 2 at a time by size. My food can't touch the other food on my plate. The radio or tv always has to be on even numbers.
  • My food cannot touch other food on the plate. No mixing aloud..

I will only eat one food at a time. I save my favorite until last.

If there are colors (like M&Ms), I will separate them by colors and arrange them into piles from smallest to largest amount. The color with the smallest amount gets eaten first and then I move up from there.

If I'm eating something like trail mix or Chex Mix, I will pick out all of whatever I like the least to eat it first. I will keep doing that with each type all the way to the end and saving my favorite part for last.

  • I normally eat one food at a time on my plate.  I also don't like it when food touches so I will only put one food on my plate at a time.

I hate it when cabinet doors are open, it drives me crazy!  H does this.

If I am eating soup, I compulsively want to read.

I don't like to sit with my feet touching the floor.  I always need to have one or both feet off the floor.  This leads to some odd positions.

Especially when I am nervous, I need to play with something in my hands (jewelry, hair, skin, ect)

<div>I totally do this too.  But I eat all the colors I don't like first so I have the good colors left at the end.  And I still always eat the inside of the cake first and then the icing.  I did it when I was a kid so the yummy icing didn't taste like cake.  With cupcakes, I eat the bottom first, so there's less cake with the icing.  I have a bit of a sweet tooth</div>

I do the opposite with cupcakes. I lick all the frosting off and then eat the cake part. With regular cake, I eat the cake first and the icing last.

  • I cannot eat food that doesn't have a proper "side item" ratio. Like if I have a sandwich and chips. If I run out of chips, I will not finish the sandwich. Burger and fries. If I run out of fries before I finish my burger, the rest of the burger is going in the trash.

<div>FI and I do this with our dog, but we usually substitute words with "Pup". Personal favorite is "California Pups / we're undeniable / fine, fresh, fur / we got it on lock / East coast represent / now put your paws up!" and then instead of the "oh oh oh" we just howl. It's hilarious and terrible all at once.</div>

  • I have to sleep with part of the blanket touching my face, preferably covering my mouth but not my nose. I also have a sleep mask that I wear every night. The most annoying is that every night, FI and I will start out facing the wall, and he's the big spoon. Then within 15 minutes, I turn over to be the big spoon, and he turns over too. But before we get really asleep, I roll BACK over to the original position. It drives him nuts but I can't help it lol

No food mixing with the exception of corn and mashed potatoes. They always get mixed.

When eating gummies or Skittles, I like to eat one of each flavor all at once, so it's like a fruit explosion in my mouth (heh heh)

When I get restless, I wiggle my toes or tap my fingers. Sometimes I tense up my thighs so it looks like I'm bouncing around in my seat. I think it was a coping mechanism I started in elementary school when things got boring.

I eat food items one at a time. I eat my broccoli, then my potatoes, then my chicken. FI thinks it's weird as hell.

I have a bad habit of smacking FI on the butt or just in general touching him or messing with him. It's still not as bad as the time he motorboated me on the escalator in JC Penney and deeply offended an older black woman. But sometimes I get stares from people when we're in public and I'm scratching his beard.

  • I feel compelled to straighten crooked pictures on the wall, even if it's somewhere I have no business touching them, like a restaurant or someone else's house.

When I was in school and keeping notebooks, I would have to use the same color pen for the entire notebook.

Not a habit but a weird thing about me...I can't stand hearing people chew. It actually provokes a major "fight or flight" reaction in me. If my FI is eating something especially crunchy, he will leave the room. It gets pretty bad...if I'm in a situation I can't get out of, like a meeting, and someone is chewing gum with their mouth open or god forbid chewing ice, I have to use relaxation techniques to keep from freaking out. I know, I'm weird.
  • Everything has to be evenly distributed with me,
if FI gives me a smack on my left butt cheek he knows he musteven it out and do one on the right. Much to his chagrin. Or if I step on a crack or bump on the sidewalk on one foot, I purposefully alter my steps so I will do the same with my other.
I also always eat the smallest slice of pizza first. No idea why, but I do.
And to continue the M&M theme, I always save all of the blue ones for last, because they're my favorite, and I like to see how many were in that package.
    Soon-to-be Mrs. Kent
  • I like to makes wishes at 11:11 every day when I can remember.
I also eat M&M's by color I save the red and green for last.
I also try to eat as much of the cake part of the cupcake first before the part with the icing.

I'm sure I have a bunch more but it's early in the day still

  • I have to read for at least 15 minutes before I fall asleep, no matter how tired I am or how late it is. I double numbers in my head when I'm stressed. (e.g. 1, 2, 4, 8....)

  • I read magazines from back to front.

I can't let any of my limbs touch each other when I sleep - but I'm a side sleeper. This involves a ridiculous amount of wrapping and twisting pillows and blankets around myself. My husband thinks this is absurd. I disagree.

I can't do dishes in bare feet or socks - I have to go get my shoes and put them on, even though I walk around the house the rest of the night in bare feet or socks.
