Thinking about moissanite ring

My boyfriend and I have been thinking about getting engaged for a while and have recently been talking about ring price and what I would like. I have always a larger ring and my taste has recently changed from always wanting a princess cut to now wanting an emerald cut. I also thought about a sapphire since I want something unique, but that was disgarded by my mother. I will be in graduate school next year and we are a young couple, so the large emerald diamond ring I dream of is completely out of the budget, but I don't think I would be satisfied with cutting down on the size of the ring just to get a diamond. I was looking on etsy and found a beautiful moissanite ring that is basically everything I would want, but I have a feeling my family, particular my mother/sister/grandmother.

Any opinions on moissanite? Bad idea? Tacky? Wanna-be?

  • LURK before posting the part about "Any opinions on moissanite? Bad idea? Tacky? Wanna-be?" cause some ladies here have moissanite rings.  Insulting the regulars leads to some flinging of virtual poo.  Besides that I'll be blunt, you should not give a flying f@ck what your mother, sister, grandmother things of what you like.  Yes it would be nice if they liked whatever ring you got but they aren't wearing it for the rest of their lives so why should their opinion matter or influence you.

Second I find moissanite or any other non diamond stone to be beautiful.  Elle and Leia have beautiful rings.  Third looks like size matters to you.

I don't mean to offend anyone... on all of the other boards I have read about moissanite (i think on wedding bee) a lot of people say they would not want to "constantly correct" people that it's not a diamond or they would feel like they are hiding the fact that it isn't a diamond... that's where I got the wanna-be idea from which I had never thought of before reading those other comments.
  • Own it and be proud of it.  It isn't a diamond and so you tell them.  "OH this isn't a diamond, its a BEAUTIFUL moissanite etc etc. I just love the way it looks"  If "wedding bee brides" wish not to constantly correct to others that the stone isn't a diamond then let that be their issue.  Its not yours unless you make it that way.
  • Well WeddingBee is full of speshul snowflakes.

Honestly, if anyone asks, tell them.  Who cares what your ring is?  Moissanite is a legitimate thing, and it's lab created, so it's more eco-friendly than diamonds are, and doesn't have the conflict-stigma some diamonds do.  It's a personal choice.  You and your SO decide what's important to you, and you go with that.  If anyone judges you, they need to not only sort out their priorities, but they also need to remove the stick from their arses.

It's a matter of personal preference, not what your friends or relatives might think.

Personally, my first choice would be moissanite. When I mentioned that to my mother (only because she brought up the topic of engagement rings), she thought I was crazy. IF BF ever asks me what I'd want in a ring, I'd tell him moissanite, otherwise, I guess it will be entirely up to him, and I know I'd love whatever he gave me.

Don't let others influence your opinion, and don't pressure your BF to get you something he cannot afford.

I can see how you'd get that impression and we haven't had a discussion about moissy rings in a while. I even asked about moissy when FI and I were looking at rings.

But no, it is not tacky or wanna be or anything. No one in real life EVER asks if your stone is a diamond or not because THAT is tacky. If you want a moissy bc it's what's you can afford, go for it!

Also, ditto lyn on her second and third points.

  • Mossy rings are great, as are saphire's, estate diamonds, and other non-traditional stones. But don't get a mossy ring as an excuse to 'speed up' an engagement. (and I hate to say this but if you can't afford a ring how are you going to pay for a wedding?)

If you're going to get  a mossy ring just b/c its cheaper then YOU will always be disappointed in it. If you truly love your ring you won't care what others say, but it sounds to me like you'll always be judging the ring b/c its not your 'dream stone' (I also suggest you let go of the idea of a 'dream stone' that you just won't be happy without.)

  • Honestly, my BF and I have very seriously looked at moissanite jewelry (not just engagment rings) because I'm a nerd, I love the idea of moissanite crystals originally being discovered as sky-gems, I'm a chemical engineer (see point the first), and I like lab-created stuff. But that's not a reason for you to get it. You should get it because you love it for what it is, not just its price point.

Have I told you lately that I love you?

OP, Lyn is 100% right. If you want a sapphire, that's a lovely choice. I have a friend with a beautiful pastel sapphire ring. If you want a diamond simulant, that's fine, too. It should only matter what you and your BF like, not your mom likes. It's not for your mom.

For people who say "oh, you have to constantly correct people about it," nope, that doesn't happen. The only comments I ever get are "That's beautiful" or "I love your ring." Nobody asks what it is, what it cost, etc. If somebody did, I'd happily tell them it's a Lannyte, but in 2.5 years, that's never come up.

I think Moissanite and Lannyte are wonderful alternatives if you want a clear stone that is conflict-free and lower cost than a diamond. But I think the most important thing here is deciding what you and your BF want and stop being so concerned with what other people think.

Honestly, this bolded parts make me think 'gold digger'. Am I saying that's what you are? No. I'm just saying those statements make it SEEM that way.

As far as moissanite goes, it's my stone of choice. It's a beautiful stone. Why is it that people consider every clear/white stone a diamond wanna-be? White sapphires? Gorgeous. They're not trying to be diamonds. They're just white sapphires. Moissanite? Amazingly beautiful. Again, not trying to be a diamond.

But going back to the size thing, I'm curious as to what it is about a LARGE stone that attracts you. Is it the status? Do you think a bigger stone means he loves you more? Or, is it truly truly truly a style thing? I don't know...it just seems superficial to me, and that's why I'm asking.

  • Maybe she just likes the look of a larger stone.  If she were a gold-digger, she wouldn't be considering moissanite or going to graduate school.
  • I like the idea of a large stone because I have always worn large, chucky rings, either plain metal or gemstones. I definitely don't think a larger stone signifies more love or a better status.

As for liking moissanite just because it's cheaper--no, that is not it. As I peruse jewelry sites looking at diamond rings/bands, none of them really speak to me. That's when I started looking at saphires, realized I liked an emerald cut, but then went back to looking at diamonds in an emeraly cut (yes, due to pressure from the mama and her thinking a diamond is more traditional). Now I'm looking at moissanite because it is a different stone and seems like I can get the size I want for a reasonable price. And I wouldn't be getting a cheaper priced ring to speed up an engagement, I just don't think my boyfriend dropping a large part of his salary on a ring when we have other things coming up that could cause a financial burden (e.g. moving and yes, eventually wedding planning).
  • Oh, and stop worrying about what your mom and grandma think.  Their opinions should have no bearing whatsoever on this decision.
  • Yes, I will probably need to stop seeking her approval haha

For you ladies who have a moissanite ring, did you buy it online or did you work with a jeweler?
  • I wanted a larger stone vs a better quality one. I promise I'm not a gold-digger.

Bold 1) I understand the style preference, but I would urge you to try some smaller styles too. You'll be wearing you're E rign all day every day for most of your life and I have friends who went with 'big' rings and they regrettable don't wear them now b/c they are just not practical day to day.

Bold 2) I apologize for jumping to that conclusion. We get some BSC ladies here who will 'settle' for a cheap ring just so they can get engaged. Want to be smart with your money is a great reason to look at a mossy ring. We used a family stone for the same reason. It saved us quite a bit of money.

Bold 3) Tell her diamonds are only traditional here, and only in the past 40 yrs or so. Look at Princess Kate- huge sapphire e-ring.
