Stupid question

So I am looking at handkerchiefs so that I have one on my wedding day to pass down to my daughter. I found one that I love and they embroider a letter on it. Do I selected the letter of my first name or last? And if last, is that before or after ceremony? Lol. So confused. I'm probably making a bigger deal than this has to be.

Re: Stupid question

  • Oh gosh I never thought about that haha! I would say your 'new' last name initial. Assuming her last name is/will be the same it will be nice for it to have her maiden initial to start passing down as well. And if not, it is still just as meaningful for it to be yours and a great story for her to tell!

I think your daughter will be proud to carry it, no matter what you choose. But I agree with PP your new last name will also be hers, so double duty monogram

Its not a stupid question. I say put either initial, whichever you prefer, or can you put both, first and last initials now or after marriage? Or only one letter? Technically, your children will be from both families and the wedding is partially celebrating the joining of both families so both last initials may be cool too, like how they do joining family crests, instead both family initials. I'm probably saying that too since I am not dropping my last name. Haha, i dont think i helped any, just gave more options... What a sweet idea, and way to start a tradition!! May have to think about that myself

Thanks everyone for the input.  I ended up calling my great-grandmother and asked her and she said that a ladies handkerchief is supposed to have the first initial of the first name.  Leave it to my great-grandmother to know about etiquette.  lol.  I have been looking for a unique and timeless one.  The one that I feel in love with comes from Spain.  I pasted the link below Emilia in case you wanted to see.

Before reading your post about what your great grandmother said, I was saying to myself it should be your first name initial not the last. Glad grandma helped me out here LOL
