I'd go with the sorbet because if you are also have a sweets table with cake, you'll have all that pastry/cakey goodness there. The sorbet is light and a good finish to end a meal and clear the palet, to make it ready for the next stuff! You are nice. My guests get only wedding cake for dessert!

EDIT: I'd have your sweets table and cake cutting come earlier than 10:30 though, especially if dinner is at 6. I'd have it by 9:30 at the latest, because if people leave early (which a lot do if they don't like dancing) they can still participate in that!

  • I think the sorbet is good since you'll have other cakey deserts later. My second choice would be the torte because ice cream and I know a lot of people who aren't into/can't eat cheesecake.

I picked the cheesecake, only because I have very sensitive teeth and anything frozen will leave me in some serious pain.

Honestly, though, I think you should just skip dessert all together.  If you're having wedding cake AND a dessert table, a third dessert will be overkill.  We opted out of the dessert that came with our wedding package and they knocked off $5 per guest.  It might be worth a discussion with your FI.  I mean, nobody is going to eat 3 desserts (unless you're inviting my 5 year old to your wedding) so why pay for something that  your guests aren't even going to eat?

  • I love sorbet so that has my vote. Are you doing this dessert right after the main course? or with the table? Either way I would move the time for the dessert table up. Are you doing any dances? I would open the table when the dance floor opens up.

  • After seeing the portions of the appetizers and entrees last night we are realizing it is probably too much food!  I  should check if there is an option of knocking the dessert off.  The dessert is served after the main meal and we will be doing speeches while people are having dessert.

Interesting about moving the sweet table time up, I almost thought it was too early considering they estimate dinner will go till about 8 pm.  The late night table will also have a selection of breads and cheeses.

We will probably do the cake cutting right after dessert since I will want to move the cake table away (on the dance floor).  If some people want to leave early I could ask about them getting a piece of wedding cake before they leave.
  • Just curious, do you know why they said dinner would take 2 hours?  That seems like a long time to me.  I've never been to a wedding buffet or sit down that lasted longer than 40min-1 hour and 15min.

<div>They advised 2 hours with speeches so I bet it is more like 1.5 hour.  We are doing some speeches after the main course and before dessert.  </div>
  • Cheesecake is my pick!  Are you all doing desserts?  We thought wedding cake kind of was dessert...

  • If you're going to keep the dessert I'd go for sorbet since it's light. If it were me, I'd keep that and eliminate the sweets table instead, so you'd have dinner and dessert, and then cake an hour or so later. (that's basically what we're doing)

Doing dessert or dessert bars on top of wedding cake is a new thing. So wedding cake can definitely still be the only dessert, it is for mine and many weddings I've been to!

  • Woah, wait a minute.  So you're doing appetizers, soup, salad, main course, dessert, wedding cake, dessert bar AND a late night bread/cheese table?  Holy smokes!!!!  Did you rent wheelbarrows to get your guests back to their cars at the end of the night?  Yeah, that is WAY too much food!  Definitely look into skipping the dessert.

And no, the only thing we're serving once the main meal is over is wedding cake.

  • Yes lots of food!  I don't see a problem, I love food.Smile  Our venue does set dinner packages and in order to give a choice of three entrees we went with the package with two appetizers.  Otherwise we were paying just as much to give the choice of three entrees without the extra appetizer. All packages included dessert.  I have heard other people at this venue sometimes won't do a wedding cake but I really wanted a cake and we are not ordering as much wedding cake considering not everyone will have it.

I think I am leading towards the sorbet for dessert it was very refreshing after a big meal...
  • I say go with all of that food if you have it in your budget!  I would LOVE to be a guest at your wedding :)  Ours will be pretty straightforward - dinner and wedding cake, but I see no problem with lots of yummy food :)

Yah it's a lot of food, but if you can swing it, do it! I've been to a wedding that had lots of appetizers plus salad, main course and wedding cake and a candy bar. It was nice- I oinked out. I just don't have the funds so I can't. But yah- sorbet is a good choice for that inbetween!

  • When I was working at the reception hall we had a super hardcore Italian wedding one time where they had lemon ice served after every course... and there were 10 courses... as a pallet cleanser to get them ready for the next course lol. I don't see a problem with what you are doing. I would love to be a guest at your wedding!

Oh, another question; you said you wanted to do the cake cutting right after dinner so you can move the table, what if you do it right after you walk in so the cake table can be moved right away and you can serve your wedding cake with the sorbet as your after dinner dessert and then have the dessert table later with other goodies?

</div><div>That is a good idea!  We were planning on only ordering cake for 70% of guests for late night table (recommended by our cake lady) so if we did it that way we would need to order more wedding cake.  </div><div>

I most likely would not eat a piece of cake so late in the evening, I would prefer it right after dinner. What else is going to be on the dessert table?

That is on my list of questions. The only description I have is a collection of finger sweets, cookies, pastries etc..
