  • I think it's somewhere between Wikipedia and Urban Dictionary.

[QUOTE]But there is hardly any FLorida in that map, AND SOMEONE SAID THERE WERE RECLUSE SPIDERS IN FLORIDA. I'd like to see your sources, please.

Maybe she lives in the red area of FL and thinks it's the whole state?   We all know people like to speak for their entire state based on their own experiences.  Kristin#### is a prefect example of that.

  • It's going to have to come down to H having to get over his fears, suck it up and deal with it. My dream state does not exist:

    High paying jobs
    LCOL
    warm weather year round
    Nightlife (bars/restaurants)
A good sports team (preferably hockey)
    No spiders or wasps/hornets
Lots of activities (amusement parks, theaters etc)
Low taxes (I would never expect NO taxes because we need taxes)
    Zero crime

If we do this it's going to be a lot of compromising. The availability of jobs is number one on my list and LCOL is next. The COL in Boston is much higher than the average wages so it's tough to move within the state.

  • I just read an article that confirmed the existence of the Northern Widow (relative to the black widow) in MA and NH.  There have also been reports of brown recluse spiders in New England due to them stowing away in shipments and such when people move.  There are also two venomous snakes in MA as well.

Just saying that deadly animals and insects are found everywhere so I think your H's fear is a bit unfounded.  Tell him to back away from Animal Planet, unless of course Too Cute! is on.  That show makes everyone warm and fuzzy.

  • Linger- exactly, "dream" anything does not exist. I am a bit more realistic. Of course there's going to be insects and wasps everywhere, of course there's going to be crime everywhere.
I live in a Boston suburb so not in the city and I could not picture myself moving out to the western part of the state where everything is cheaper. I don't want to drive an hour to the grocery store.

Maggie- There are rattlesnakes a few towns over from me (the highest concentration in such a small area in the entire county I believe), but for some reason they stay in that one area. I know there will be venemous insects wherever we go, that's nature. H definitely needs to lay off the AP, unfortunately he won't watch Too Cute unless there's puppies, but I'll take it.

  • You need to just get rid of no wasps/hornets/spiders as they are in every state.  Funny enough they are more common in warmer states.

Zero crime?    That is something to think of when it's time to find an actual place to live in the city you choose, not for what state you want to move.

I live less than 10 miles from #17 and #20.

City is clean, people are nice, LCOL, houses are very inexpensive, wages are lower than I'm use to seeing, not sure the job market.  We have 2 good sports teams and the speedway.  We live on the cultural trail so we can bike and walk safely.   There are a lot of bars/restaurants within walking distance of us.  Museums, concerts, theaters.   It was cold this winter, but even after living in the islands for 15 years I didn't find it too bad.

We seem to be on the line for recluses though.

  • As PP said, don't come to MD. I mean, we have fantastic food and an awesome football team, but the COL is high, employment for the general state is low (the economy in my county is pretty good, though it's a really expensive place to rent/buy) and we have black widows. The like to come out and play at my house, so I kill them often, but most of my friends don't find them around their houses. Oh, and we have copperheads. Which also like to come out and play at my house, but not my friends'. MD is a great place to visit :-) Don't do DC or northern VA either.

Yes, I know it's unrealistic, hence the "dream state". It doesn't exist.

Yea there are bad neighborhoods everywhere. I understand that too. A crime free area is non-existent. I know that just because one part of town is bad, doesn't mean the whole state is bad. I get it.

All the talk of bugs and stuff in this thread has given me a case of the squicks.

  • There's a lot of hoaxy stories going around about bugs and spiders. The latest one (which surfaced years ago originally) is the white spider that hides in toilet seats. I've also seen the spider big enough to take up the space of a whole garage wall.

Obviously those don't exist in the way they are portrayed but it still geeks me out.

Nope, just scrolled right through it.

Bad troll! No... um... crap, what do trolls eat? Cheeseburgers? Pickles? I don't know. Bad troll. Timeout. :P

FI's putting in his vows that he will kill all the spiders. Or any creature with more than four legs.

  • Court you're lucky! I have to be the bug killer in my house. I hate spiders just as much as the next person but H can't even look at one without screaming like a little girl. It's kind of hilarious.
