December 2013 Weddings

How close is too close to Christmas?

My fiance and I have been engaged for a very long time (since May 2009), and we still have a while to go before December 2013! The time is approaching, however, for us to start looking at locations in a few months, and I was wondering about the date of the wedding.

I will be going to graduate school for education during that time, meaning I'll be teaching at a high school or middle school, and must abide by their school calendar. This means that I'll have a small window of opportunity (about 2 weeks) during the school's Christmas break to set the date.

My question is: How close is too close to Christmas to set the date for my wedding? The school district I expect to be placed in during my grad program doesn't get out for Christmas break until around the 22nd of December.

Any advice would be appreciated!

  • I personally think anything past the 22nd is cutting it super close! But if it works for you and your family, why not!

But me & another girl on here, MK, have 12/21 for our dates. I kinda thought it was a little close, but that's our anniversary, so we want that date more than anything else! lol

    Good Luck!

  • If you can do it by that Sat 12/21, or even a friday night 12/20 then I would say go for it!  We are getting married 12/21.  But I agree that after that is getting too close.  It also would depend on how many out of town guests you are having.  Just keep in mind that most out of town guests will spend the night which adds another day closer to Christmas to factor in.

  • Thanks for the advice =) Yes, I agree that anything after the 21st is a bit too close! Our anniversary is the 26th, the day after Christmas, but that isn't any better of an option! I might be able to have the wedding earlier in the month. I guess I'll just have to talk to the school district and see!

    Thanks again =)
  • I also work for the school district and we've decided to stick with our anniversary and get married on 12/21/13. We will be together for exactly 8 years that day. We are already planning. I am going to look at a venue next week to see if it is nice enough to have Jeremy come along and check it out as well.

I was going to get married on 12/21 because that was our anniversary of when we became officially boyfriend/girlfriend. But we decided that we will get married on 12/20 which is the anniversary of our very first date.
  • My husband and I have been married for 30 as of 2014. We plan to renew our vows and need to move our anniversary date from October to Decemeber. We chose to have it one day later than our orignal date the 21 of December. I love the holidays and our one daughter will be back from college by then. So really any date is a good date for marriage. We understand that many people may be traveling and thought this was the latest we could go on that week.
  • I am getting married on December 28th, 2013.
We chose the date based on my universities schedule and consideration of out-of-town guests.
My university lets out on December 6th, with the possibility of exams running until the 22nd.  I didn't want to be potentially writing finals, papers, doing practicum right up until the day before my wedding.  We also wanted to make sure that people could celebrate Christmas at home if they wanted, but then also invite them to come and celebrate with us just after.
So far we have heard nothing but good feedback about the date.  We sent out save the dates last month so that people knew not to make any major travel plans and to reserve the date for us!  Many family members are choosing to come early and celebrate the holidays with us as well, which makes me happy =)
  • My date is 12/21/13.  I love xmas and we got engaged at Christmas time last year.  We're hoping to catch people coming back into our hometown for the holidays!

We're another 12/20!  My fiance is in school until the 14th, so we figured do it as soon as possible after that, we've already waited 7.5 years!  I think if you're having a lot of out of town guests (like us) it's fine because it gives your extended family a great excuse to spend the holidays together.

  • Ours will be 12/21.  We picked that date because our best friends will be in the country for Christmas with their family.  I do think ours it too close for a couple of guest, and yet I absolutely love the date and will not be at all hurt it they can't make it.  I do understand that it's tight as far as timing.

We're also keeping the guest list very small.  no more than 3 people.  Best friends, close family.
