hi ladies, i mainly stick to my local board but i thought i could probably get more advice if i branched out...
i really like the idea of a groom's cake. my fiance has been great about supporting me with every design decision for the wedding and as much as i'm trying to incorporate things that he will like, i think overall he views it as my show. i want to have an aspect that is 100% completely him. my problem is, i don't really know what to do and our wedding date is fast approaching (may 8, 2010).
in researching, i've read that a lot of people design a groom's cake around the groom's interests. the problem is, i'm not finding anything cake-worthy. he loves his xbox, he loves our cat, he's fascinated with pirate ships... but none of these say 'groom's cake for my 30 year old future husband. to me, they say '5 year old's birthday party'.

so, i need inspiration, ideas, something to get my creativity rolling again.
thanks!

it's looking like it will be a surprise. he explained the concept to my mom a few weeks back and when he was explaining it, he mentioned that it's usually a surprise for the groom. up until that point, i had always figured i would get his input on what he would want!

I would only think it would look like a kid's birthday cake if it were just a plain sheet cake decorated, like the ones you get in the supermarket. It will cost a bit more, but if you want it to look really awesome and more grown-up, a sculpted cake is your best bet.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.
Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
The most inspiration for a grooms cake can come from what he is into:
Does he have any hobbies? Whats his favorite movie or tv show? Make a list of what he likes. If you want to have agrooms cake centered more around both of you- what do you like to do together? Replicate where you met. YOu have a cat toegther and Having a cake replicated to look like your pet covers many areas- Its away to "involve" your pet in your wedding, is giving a grooms cake, and will have all great reactions from guest from the oohs and aahs to everyone laughing and is still sentimental.
Now I must say we have alot in common. I am getting married on May 2, 2010 and I feel 100% like you do. David has been extremely supportive of doing everything that I want to do. Also very into his XBOX and our sweet cat Bella- I have had to expand my horizons in trying to find him a cake that doesn't stray to far from our wedding & that is personalized to his interest. I have felt the same way that everything I have found or come up with just seems to birthcake.
So I finally came up with a grooms cake that matches our wedding cake and is centered around David. My wedding cake is 3 square tiers- so I designed the grooms cake to also be constructed on 3 square tiers (significantly smaller than my wedding cake.) We are having a Lord of the rings wedding theme- which we both love- so the cake is the 3 books piled ontop of each other. The books are going to be made to look very old fashioned and will have gold writing duplicated from the titles and author of the books.
David has read those books a million times!!!
You have to get very creative and think a bit out of the box. I really think duplicating the wedding cakes shape though takes away from it looking to birthday cake!!!
Ihave also seen brides have a groomscake designed by the groom. Basically its like letting him pick his very own wedding cake. Your letting him do something he wants and it won't be to odd looking!!!
Well goodluck!!! Hope this helps!!
They made an xbox cake that is adorable!
honestly, i sometimes think my life would be easier if he was passionate about sports, although i like the tv freedom i have right now.
anyways, i think i'm going with the xbox cake. thanks for the link, blondebride, that came is awesome and if i can get anything even close to that i think he's going to be ecstatic!
now i'm just waiting for the price quotes... i've sent some pictures to a couple different places and hopefully their answers won't make me pass out!
you guys have been great. i love my local board but there are so few of us that are active, i may have to stick around here a while
