Officiant Gift?

I didn't want to thread jack, but am I supposed to be buying our officiant a gift? I thought they were considered vendors.

Re: Officiant Gift?

  • We didn't give ours one. We just gave him his fee.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I think a small token of appreciation couldn't hurt, depending on your relationship with the officiant and the service he/she provides.

We are inviting our officiant to the rehearsal dinner but not the wedding, as he is a judge that we are paying to officiate and we have no relationship with him outside of the wedding. He costs $200, which I find really reasonable. He has been really accomodating and I like him a LOT as a person, so I plan to pick him up a bottle of wine to give as a thank you gift in addition to his $200 fee.

I don't think they're required, but it's a nice gesture if you really like them.
  • Our officiant (preacher of our home church) and his wife travelled for our wedding, and didn't charge us. We paid for their hotel room and gave a gift card to their favorite restaurant, as well as wrote a nice thank-you card.

If there was a true vendor relationship, with a fee and everything, I wouldn't have given anything extra above a thank you note.

She is traveling, but it is really a vendor relationship (and she is really freaking expensive too) so I'll just go with a note. Thanks!

You could have totally thread jacked it would have been fine.
We are getting our officiant a gift, because he's actually good friends with my fiance's family and he's in our small group for church. They are technically a vendor and we are paying him the suggested honorarium, but in addition are also giving him and his wife a gift. :)
