What is the proper etiquette for tipping when the vendor is the business owner? 

- our photographer owns his business and it will be just him
-hair stylist & makeup artist- we aren't going to a salon, they are coming to us and own their businesses and aren't bringing assistants
-cake?
-florist- owns his company

I had heard that when they are the owner of their company you don't tip, but that just seems weird.

    This. It can't hurt to tip your vendors to let them know you appreciate the great job they did.

    If you are happy with the service you received, you should tip your vendor if they are the owner or not. It's a nice way to thank them for their services.

    Just because they are the owner doesn't mean they are taking home more pay then their employees. In my opinion by not tipping them, you are punishing them for taking the risks and being a business owner.
