Wedding Woes

Cat Owners

Advise needed.

We finally (YAY) have screen doors on all of our doors, meaning we can open up the house with the attic fan to get a good air flow going.

Stupid effin' Sebastian is obsessed with going outside.  He has now managed to worry 2 (repaired) holes in the screen.  We've tried spraying it down with hot sauce, but it was no deterrent.

Suggestions?

Growing up we had a screened in patio, my parents put these wire screens over the lower half to keep our cats in, they were screwed in, but would be obstructive to your view. I'd think chicken wire would serve the same purpose.

we've done baby-gate over the screen, but really, 'pet proof screening' = da bomb.

Your local ACE hardware store can put it in.  It's pricy, and they can still, if super talented, pop the screen out of the frame, but, they can't claw through it.  When I worked there, I TRIED to rip it and couldn't, with every tool on the shelf.
(ours was replaced w/ that like 8 years ago and FINALLY needs to be re-done)

I used a citrus spray, cats hate the smell of it and it got mine to stop clawing at the screens.
  • GB, THANK YOU.  I never knew such a thing existed.  I don't think he can pop it out, but we might give it a try.

I'm not sure the scent stuff is working.  Someone told us cats hate cinnamon too.  He's too obsessed to smell anything, I think.

6, we don't live in a location where "out" is an option.  B/c "flattened by car" or "beat up by other random cats" will quickly result.  I might not like the cats, but DH would be devastated and I would feel bad if he died b/c I was a bad cat owner.

Ella, we tried the harness thing.  It was a hilarious comedy of errors.  I followed all the directions of getting used to it, then getting used to it on, then trying outside.  He basically army crawled all over the place like his back legs were broken and useless when it was on and then when he went outside, went completely spastic.  It was a wasted 3 month process I'm not inclined to repeat.

  • My cat has no front claws because I believe in cat mutilation.  It solves a lot of problems.

I just a friendly gal looking for options.

I find that not all cats respond to the scents either, and I've tried citrus and cinnamon.  This special screen, or the chicken wire, sounds like the best bet.

I did the harness thing with my rabbit (just the one - the other figured out how to destroy the harness within two seconds of having it on by contorting her body to get the fastenings within range of her teeth), and it was comical.  So comical, that now, when I hem pants, I put the extra ring of fabric around him like a harness and watch him go nuts getting out of it.  It's good exercise for him, and a good show for me, if not a bit diabolical on my part.
