Slideshow at the reception--yay or nay?

I feel like I've asked a million questions today...sorry but here is one more!

How do you feel about slideshows being projected during dinner at the reception? FI wants one....but I don't really. I don't think FI wants one badly enough to make it himself and I just do not want to take on another project before the wedding. Plus, it makes me uncomfortable to play a slide show that is essentially, "hey! look at me!" I think I have only been to one or two weddings that has actually had them, though, and they were cute and everything but I just can't help but think no one cares.

Did you have one? Do you think it was worth it?

Im not a fan. However, a small one in the corner is fine with me. Those who want to watch can, but it's not all in your face.

Great I'm glad we are all on the same page with this, haha. Poor FI...but I just do not want another time consuming project right now. Plus we have barely any photos of us as a couple other than engagement photos and a few staged facebook photos here and there...we just are not the picture taking types. It would be mostly childhood photos anyway, and I was a tubby kid. No one needs to see that....

I'm considering one during the rehearsal dinner (more as a background), which would include some pics of immediate family/BP (with permission). I agree that during the reception should be in the background at most, your guests should have no problem entertaining themselves without it!

I like the rehearsal dinner idea, might be a fair compromise. Where are you having yours? Ours is just at Famous Dave's and I'm not sure if they have a way to play that (and I'm not into it enough to bring my own equipment

Heh) Is yours at a restaurant, too?

I'm not sure where of the restaurant you're referencing. If it's a local place, chances are it's not in the same city/state as mine.

But yes, you need to talk with the management there to see if doing so is even an option before you spend hours and money putting it together.

I just meant to ask how you were planning to show it in a restaurant setting. When I think of typical restaurants, I can't picture where there would be opens TVs or wall space for projectors so I was just wondering what your logistics were. I didn't think this had anything to do with being in a certain city or state? I know all restaurants are different, but, assuming your restaurant is typical, I was just wondering how you were planning on showing it in that setting.

I just didn't recognize Famous Daves. I don't have mine decided 100% because of the logistics, but it does look like we'll be supplying the equipment. My dad is able to get a projector from work. I'm seeing the venue for the first time next month, and will be deciding then.

Oh I see, thanks. Famous Dave's is a chain restaurant so I thought using the name wouldn't be confusing, lol. Maybe it's only a chain in the midwest?

I love them when they're played at dinner - be it at the wedding or rehearsal dinner - and when they're kept short. 5 minutes or so. We were at a wedding recently where the video was a recreation of The Lion King, music and all, where they talked about (and imitated, using stuffed animals) the bride and groom fornicating and it was a painful 20 minutes.

I think the RD is a good compromise. You can always bring a lap top and have it set up on the laptop.

I had to sit through an hour long one in a church without AC in the middle of summer with 100 F heat, it killed any desire I might have had for one.

I don't like them. If your FI does one, make sure there's no 20 minute stuffed animal fornication going on before you play it live. Ugh.

We had one playing in the background on the plasma screens the DJ provided all night long. I really hate when people stop the music and force guests to watch.

I'm not a fan of slide shows, especially during dinner when people want to socialize. That being said, my daughter and SIL had a slideshow that played continuously on the widescreen TV over the bar in the cocktail area. They put a lot of time into scanning old family photos, including pictures from the parents and grandparents weddings, holiday and special event photos. Many of the guests were delighted to see their pictures included. At any given time, throughout the reception, there were a few guests enjoying the slideshow.

We didn't have one, I couldn't be bothered to even think of putting one together. I don't mind them so much when it's close family (like when my brother got married), cos it's kinda nice reminiscing, but as a random friend guest, meh. I like the idea of it being in the background so I could watch it over the evening, as I will eventually see it all. But short is good

My BF had one at her wedding, which she and the groom narrated. It lasted about 10 minutes, and showed more about their life up north than one of them growing up and then being together. It didn't flow too well and they just seemed to make things up to say as new photos appeared. It got a little long and she's my best friend

We had one playing in the church while everyone was walking in and sitting down and waiting for the ceremony to start. Everyone enjoyed having something to look at while waiting for it to begin, and of course older family members thought it was cute and sentimental to see the bride and groom as kids growing up. H best man put the slideshow together using pics we gave him. He like, really wanted to do it. Idk why lol

We had one, mostly because every wedding I've been to had one. It's kind of a thing in my circle. We played it while people were getting served cake because, yay cake! If anyone wasn't interested they could focus on the yummy cake, and those who wanted to watch, could. It was short (less than 5 min) and our parents loved it because it included a bunch of old family photos.

I don't mind them at the rehearsal dinner, or I've seen them played during cocktail hour-not in a way that people had to stop what they were doing to watch, just as a backdrop.

Btw when I've seen them at the rehearsal dinner they just had a portable screen and a projector. The venues have been common for meetings/RDs/retirement dinners, etc so the restaurants actually had the equipment available for a small fee.

I can not stand them when they're long and drawn out. The first two are sometimes kinda fun and cute, but then it gets really old really fast. I like when it's shown on display somewhere and you can watch at your own leisure.

Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear your opinions on this. I talked to FI and he isn't feeling the slideshow as much anymore. So we might just skip it.

No. It is 100% truth. FTR, the couple did not make the video themselves. The best man did. The couple was LIVID.

Honestly, I laughed when the video started and they played the Circle of Life and superimposed the groom's face over Simba's - but it should have stopped there.

I can't stand a slide show at a wedding.

A funeral, now that is totally appropriate. It's way too AWish for a wedding, IMO.

We're doing one at the rehearsal dinner. Our dinner will be very small so it will only be our immediate family and wedding party, so they're probably the only ones who would want to see it any way. We made one for fi' s parents' 40th anniversary and we all really enjoyed it. Again, it was only immediate family so it was appropriate for the audience.

I hate being forced to sit through these things. One wedding I was in featured 3 back to back and was over half an hour long. Shoot me in the face.

No slideshow = 1 less thing to plan.

I like the RD idea. If your FI is adamant about it, this might be a good way to go.

My friends had a slideshow going on an electronic picture frame that was on their guest book table. That way guests could check it out if they wanted, but it wasn't forced. It was a nice touch.
