  I was surprised and apparently so was DH, cos he hadn't planned to do it when he did.  He had planned to take me to the mountains for New Years and do it on New Years Eve on top of a mountain or similar, but he ended up doing it the night of the lunar eclipse on the winter solstice.  He hadn't planned it, but as we were watching the moon, he figured it was as good a time as any.  

  
  

  He started acting weird and getting nervous, which made me realize something was up.  He wanted to go watch outside too (-35C) and finally got me out there so he could get down on 1 knee.  He didn't have the ring (it was at home) since he hadn't planned on proposing that night.

  I love all these stories! So although I knew he had boughten the ring, I was caught off guard with the proposal. I was thinking maybe Christmas, but nothing. One of my gifts was this box with a table setting and a voucher for breakfast in bed, to be redeemed on New Year's Day. I kept telling myself ok this is weird it has to be it.

  NYE we are at a friend's party and joking about getting engaged because I know breakfast in bed is tomorrow and he keeps bringing it up. He tells me that he still has to ask my dad's permission--which is very important to him--which makes me upset and grouchy because we had just seen my parents on Christmas, why didn't he ask then?!

  The next morning I'm still grouchy because I know the proposal isn't happening and I'm telling him at this point I don't even want breakfast.. He walks in the room with the tray of food and any small hope I have is gone when I scan the tray for a ring. He leaves the room because he forgot something to which I snarkily respond, "ketchup??". He walks back in, drops down on one knee and proposes. We always joke about how I was being such a grouchy snatch after him throwing me off.
